The shipping forecast is something of an institution in the UK - it is read out on Radio 4 at certain times of day and it follows a prescribed set of sea areas round the UK. It can sound almost like poetry. Before they read the last forecast at 00:50 they play a piece of music called "Sailing By" which I'm very fond of - rather twee - but it has a very cosy feel to it late at night somehow.
I ran out of yarn at home over the break and had to make the sleeves 3/4 length. Last night I found the last ball of yarn, but I think I'll keep the sleeves the way they are.
*edit: this was later frogged and made into a different Glampyre design that looked much better on me.

The forecast for the Northern Lights was showing very favourable, however after packing up all of my gear and dogs, driving for over an hour, it was clear to me that the recently full Moon was going to ruin my opportunity to capture the aurora. Noticing that I could see the Rockies from the lookout, I snapped a few moonlight/starlight/aurora/city light pollution shots of the mountains, and these are the best of the bunch.
The bottom is forecast to fall out mid next week as arctic air arrives with snow & dreaded ice possibly on the way.

We'll see whether this actually happens because those temperatures would be considered very high (probably records) for July or August.

ETA: It didn't get that hot.
ETA 2011: For the last few months they have included the average low temperature in these two week forecasts. The interesting thing has been that although we haven't had many record highs, there has been a very common trend that the low temperatures have been above average which fits with predictions that global warming will occur in part due to more cloud coverage preventing heat release at night.
ETA: 2012 has had some of the most extreme weather yet. Read and watch here for an explanation of how the melting Arctic ice cap affects the jet stream so prolonged heat waves and cold snaps are more likely.

The forecasted "arctic blast" has arrived. It was bitterly cold today, though not as bitterly cold as it is supposed to be tomorrow. I fully intended to stay inside today and photograph something in here, but I looked out the window and saw this golden sunset, so I bundled up, stepped out on the porch with my 55-250mm lens, and shot a few frames. I was out there five minutes tops, but definitely felt the cold. I think it was worth it, though.
That said, don't expect anything at all great tomorrow. I am not budging from the great indoors tomorrow, not with the subzero (very subzero) wind chill we're expected to have. To be honest, you'll probably see a mug of tea or something similar.
