Our 41st anniversary and we celebrated by spending the day in New York City.

I missed posting any photos yesterday, as I was just too tired the day before to look for and edit images. Today, I am a little more prepared and organized, but still posting late.
It always puzzles me when I/we come across "discarded" or lost foot-ware, even more so on a cold, snowy day. I don't know if these were on the ground when someone spotted them or if they were already on the park bench. Perhaps the young child was in a stroller and kicked off his warm boots, but I would have thought the person pushing the stroller would have then walked into them. Very strange, but I thought I would post a photo here, just in case someone happens to see my photo of their child's lost boots.
These were seen yesterday, 14 November 2017, while friends and I were on a morning birding walk in Weaselhead. What a dull, miserable, overcast, cold, gloomy, somewhat foggy morning it was - just the opposite to what the weather forecast had said. I don't know why I went, other than that I knew I should get out on a walk, especially before real winter sets in, and I hibernate.
Did we see endless, amazing birds? No, of course not, despite doing a much longer walk than expected! It was very quiet bird-wise, with the "usual" birds seen, such as Chickadees and Nuthatches. The only photo, out of maybe half a dozen shots, was this photo of little boots.

Festination is the rapid stuttering walk that people with Parkinson's, like the prof, sometimes adopt, especially when stopping or turning corners. These new Birkenstocks make it harder to festinate and they discourage corns too. It's a pity they're more expensive since we left the EU.

The Guild Church of St Margaret of Pattens: The dedication is to Margaret of Antioch
Situated in Rood Lane, Eastcheap, London, EC3M 1HS. St Margaret’s is Church of England and was first recorded in 1067, a year after ‘The Battle of Hastings’. Originally built in wood, it was rebuilt in stone at some undetermined date. It was neglected and fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1530 but by 1538 it was rebuilt.
Unfortunately it was destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666 and it wasn’t until 1687 that it was rebuilt but it was worth the wait as Sir Christopher Wren was the architect. The exterior is notable for the spire which is 200ft tall. It was Wren’s third highest and the only one that he designed in the ‘Medieval Style’. The interior of the church is a basic rectangle but it does have some very unusual furnishings. It possesses the only canopied pews in London, they are at the back of the church close to the entrance. These were intended for the churchwardens. There is also a punishment box carved with a head of the devil, this is where wrongdoers would sit during the mass.
It was one of the few churches that escaped damage in ‘The Blitz’. In 1954 it ceased to be a parish church and became one of the Guild church. There is no Sunday service but there are regular week-day services.
The name ‘patten’ derives from wooden-soled overshoes that were worn to prevent people from ruining their own footware because of the poor state of the roads (mud, horse manure and other excrement tipped from the building, there was no sewerage facilities as we have today). There is a small museum inside the church, with display cases showing the history and products of the Pattenmakers and the Basketmakers. Since the 15th century the Worshipful Company of Pattenmakers have been associated with St. Margaret’s and there are panels on the south wall that show past masters. The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers also have close links to St. Margaret’s and there are similar panels to commemorate their past masters.
Finally, in one corner of the church is a closed cabinet where there is written ‘For God, King & Country’ and there is also a dedication on the bottom of the cabinet. Open the doors and inside are memorial plaques to the submariners of a ‘K4’ class submarine that went down in a tragic accident of the coast of Fife in September 1918 with the loss of 105 men. There are also 12 other WWI casualties not connected to the sinking that also appear on the memorial. One of my photographs shows the whole story.

In Glen Nevis, there are delightful walks to satisfy the low-level hiker and photographer. One such walk is a hike through the gorge in the Glen, where the River Nevis cascades and tumbles down from the surrounding mountains, on its way to the sea.
This walk is a straight forward route but good footware is recommended and walkers should always be extremely careful and sensible when walking in the outdoors. Serious walkers can park their cars in Braveheart carpark or at the Ionad Nibheis Centre near the entrance to the Glen, whilst whose preferring a much shorter walk can begin at the Lower Falls carpark. If you only have a couple of hours, then you can park at the head of the Glen, near the entrance to the gorge. On your way into this most beautiful of Highland Glens you are bound to see some of the local Highland cattle grazing. Before the gorge, the Lower Falls are the first real show of power the river can offer and during wet periods these waterfalls are extremely impressive as they thunder below your feet under the bridge.
