The Kattenstoet is a triennial parade and festival held on the second Sunday in May. This picture is from 2006; the next Kattenstoet will be on 10 May 2009.
The Kattenstoet remembers how the people of Ieper used to throw cats from the Cloth Hall belfry (possibly to ward off witchcraft, possibly just as a way of reducing a cat overpopulation problem) from the middle ages until 1817.
The tradition, this time using toy cats thankfully, was revived in 1938 only to end abruptly due to Nazi occupation. In 1946 the tradition was revived again as an annual event. The event missed a year in 1985 due to a visit by the Pope and in 1991 it switched to triennial rather than annual, possibly reflecting the size of the festival.
From the parade itself comes this angry cat; the eyes on the side are drums and the float itself was satisfyingly loud.

Root Beer Float Cupcake
This week was my TFSG Michelle's birthday. Birthdays mean a meeting of the Supper Models... This time we decided to have a desert monsters theme alongside the appetizer meal. this must all sound like such gibberish to everyone, so I'll just describe the picture: Michelle's birthday root beer float cupcakes. Root beer cupcake with root beer icing and vanilla bean "icecream" icing.

The Move Forward, One People float from the Chingay 2014 was parade around Eu Tong Sen Street and New Bridge Road during Yuan Xiao Jie at Chinatown for the Chinese New Year Festival celebrations.

Yamakasa is a festival to celebrate harvest in mid-July in Hakata. Parade through the city centre is the highlight of this festival. Kakiyama floats are carried by bearers wearing a loincloth. After receiving water on their bodies in spirited manner, they carry 1-ton floats while giving each other a shout 'Oisa, Oisa' then running through the streets at full speed by pushing the float from behind. It is a 1.2-kilometer course.

For several years the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the Pacific Islands has collected boluses from Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge for education and outreach purposes through a variety of projects. These boluses have been shipped to educators locally and nationally within the United States, bringing to light issues surrounding marine debris, seabirds, protected spaces, and conservation. More recently schools have also participated in a Citizen Science project, reporting back to us their findings from dissecting their boluses. Not only does this provide glimpses into each albatross’ diet, but it helps inform management of the colonies and their habitat.
Here is a collection of photos from different boluses collected on Midway, as well as individual items that are commonly found in boluses.

We are building an art float with friends and neighbors for this year’s Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.
Our float for this parade features the Bamboodu Theater, a mobile puppet stage I created for civic events and art shows. Our first show stars Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. As music plays, a Mr. Trump’s recent tweets and alternative facts appear on a news ticker. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head.
As we march, we will invite parade watchers to sing along the inspiring poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty (“Give me your tired, your poor …”). Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to change the world through civic action.
I am making this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country.
In this photo session, we were joined by journalist Paul Liberatore and photographer James Cacciatore, who are reporting about this float for the Independent Journal, Marin County’s main newspaper. It was a pleasure to welcome them both and introduce them to our team.
I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors who are helping bring it to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.
