Yamakasa is a festival to celebrate harvest in mid-July in Hakata. Parade through the city centre is the highlight of this festival. Kakiyama floats are carried by bearers wearing a loincloth. After receiving water on their bodies in spirited manner, they carry 1-ton floats while giving each other a shout 'Oisa, Oisa' then running through the streets at full speed by pushing the float from behind. It is a 1.2-kilometer course.

Jack and I took a morning swim at my grandparents this morning. It really free'd my spirit. I so totally needed that dip in the pool. I've been in such a funk lately, it felt so good to be free like a child. I did lots of diving board jumps. It was really nice just to have that time alone with Jack at the pool.

One of the great recent additions to my neighborhood roster is 61 Local, a new bar on Bergen Street with a universally benevolent approach to all beverages - so there is good beer, which is sort of a requirement these days, at least in my world, but also good wine, good coffee, and good artisanal soda. And good sandwiches, too. And awesome little pickle plates (spicy or horseradish) for a dollar.
That stretch of Bergen Street was formerly a wasteland, but between 61 Local and a couple of going-strong gallery spaces, it has become both chic and hip, which is tricky.
My neighborhood is one of the go-to points in the new locavore movement, in which food places seek out locally-sourced foods and ingredients where possible, and 61 Local fits right in. I don't know if it's a political thing or a cachet thing or a quality-control thing, or a combination of all three; from the happy consumer's point of view, it hardly matters.
On this August Saturday, the bar brings together a couple of small food businesses for a Pint Mash-up. There's Ovenly on the baking side (impossibly rich ice cream sandwiches), Kickstand on the coffee side, and the revivified Steve's Ice Cream on the ice cream side, along with the usual array of beverages.
One of the features of the afternoon is the Beer Float. Mine, above, is made from Victory Storm King Stout and a double scoop of Steve's Small-Batch Bourbon Vanilla ice cream.
"Liminal Float," created by Duncan Rawlinson, explores the latent space through contemporary photography and artificial intelligence imaging techniques. The image captures a serene, surreal moment of tranquility, where the boundaries of reality and imagination blur into a vibrant and peaceful scene. Through this blend of modern photography and AI, Rawlinson invites viewers to experience the mysterious and reflective nature of this tranquil space.
