Floater is a chaise longue designed together with Mathias Bernhard at the Chair for CAAD, ETH Zurich and was produced in close collaboration with Kläusler Acrylstein AG.
The elegant sinuous design is based on the distinctive material properties of acrylic stone combined with advanced digital design and fabrication techniques. Generative modeling and analyzation tools were used to maximize the available area on each sheet of 12mm “HI-MACS solid surface” and minimize stress due to bending. The design was adopted according to these parameters and split in three parts to be manufacturable from standard sheet dimensions. The 2D-CNC cut flat pieces were then vacuum formed on 3-axis CNC milled MDF molds and afterwards seamlessly glue-joint to form a single monolithic shell. The wings on each side appear to hardly touch the ground and emphasize the floating appearance of the chaise. They also enable the user to gently rock back and forth while relaxing on the smooth and durable surface.
Four prototypes have so far been realized in Alpine White, Fiery Red and Black. The project is still under development but different colors are available on demand.

Here is my result after following the rootbeer float cupcake recipe from teamsugar.com/group/30207/recipes/483989. My only regret is that I followed the reassuring advice in the recipe and over filled my liners :( If you make these please follow your own gut when filling!

Floats, characters and other symbols of a previous era traveled down Fourth Street, Oct. 26, 2013, as Northwest Missouri State students, employees, alumni and friends gathered for the annual Homecoming parade. While the 2013 Homecoming theme was "Rolling Out the '90s," each year's parade features marching bands, floats and paper mache clowns. (Photo by Darren Whitley/Northwest Missouri State University)

We are building an art float with friends and neighbors for this year’s Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.
Our float for this parade features the Bamboodu Theater, a mobile puppet stage I created for civic events and art shows. Our first show stars Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. As music plays, a Mr. Trump’s recent tweets and alternative facts appear on a news ticker. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head.
As we march, we will invite parade watchers to sing along the inspiring poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty (“Give me your tired, your poor …”). Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to change the world through civic action.
I am making this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country.
In this photo session, we were joined by journalist Paul Liberatore and photographer James Cacciatore, who are reporting about this float for the Independent Journal, Marin County’s main newspaper. It was a pleasure to welcome them both and introduce them to our team.
I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors who are helping bring it to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.
Our Bamboodu Float is coming along beautifully, and we can’t wait to show it off at the parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.
Join your neighbors to keep democracy alive!

The favorite desert of my grandfather, and one of my favorites as well: a root-beer float is made by pouring root-bear over vanilla ice cream in a frosty mug. Unfortunately it's hard to find root-beer in Germany, so I had to special order it. It was a bit expensive, but totally worth it. It's even our favorite brand!
