Yamakasa is a festival to celebrate harvest in mid-July in Hakata. Parade through the city centre is the highlight of this festival. Kakiyama floats are carried by bearers wearing a loincloth. After receiving water on their bodies in spirited manner, they carry 1-ton floats while giving each other a shout 'Oisa, Oisa' then running through the streets at full speed by pushing the float from behind. It is a 1.2-kilometer course.

Onam Float, part of Onam Celebrations 2010... Shot from Thiruvananthapuram City... Location: Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala State, India.

We are building an art float with friends and neighbors for this year’s Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.

Our float for this parade features the Bamboodu Theater, a mobile puppet stage I created for civic events and art shows. Our first show stars Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. As music plays, a Mr. Trump’s recent tweets and alternative facts appear on a news ticker. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head.

As we march, we will invite parade watchers to sing along the inspiring poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty (“Give me your tired, your poor …”). Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to change the world through civic action.

I am making this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country.

In this photo session, we were joined by journalist Paul Liberatore and photographer James Cacciatore, who are reporting about this float for the Independent Journal, Marin County’s main newspaper. It was a pleasure to welcome them both and introduce them to our team.

I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors who are helping bring it to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.

Our Bamboodu Float is coming along beautifully, and we can’t wait to show it off at the parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.

I would venture that this is the best Disney snack. Period! So yummy with Pineapple flavored ice cream in Pineapple juice! I dream of this...It is served at Aloha Isle in the Magic Kingdom.

Jack and I took a morning swim at my grandparents this morning. It really free'd my spirit. I so totally needed that dip in the pool. I've been in such a funk lately, it felt so good to be free like a child. I did lots of diving board jumps. It was really nice just to have that time alone with Jack at the pool.

Well it's been an interesting couple of days. The C: drive on my main computer failed. No files were lost aside from a few notes from school but it's a huge pain and happened at a very bad time (right as I was about to print some things for a project due that day).

It also screwed up my Flickr project and I missed a day as I don't currently have proper access to all of my photos.

That said I now have to pick two photos to post today AND they have to be one's from the last week or so as that's all I have on my laptop.

So here's the first. A night shot from last night. Granville island in downtown Vancouver. Going for maximum sharpness on this 30 second exposure I used my tripod, cable release and the mirror-up function on my D300.

If you enjoy taking photos at night (or just lanscapes in general really) the mirror-up function is simply a must. One of the reasons I preffer Nikon to Canon is that the MUP function is a finger tip control and very easy to switch on and off.

So the general idea with night work is to minimize any vibrations using your tripod, a cable release (or remote) and if your camera has it, MUP.

Shot at f/11, and ISO 200 with the 30 second exposure. Edited in Lightroom, just cropped and some light duty noise reduction.
