Floater is a chaise longue designed together with Mathias Bernhard at the Chair for CAAD, ETH Zurich and was produced in close collaboration with Kläusler Acrylstein AG.
The elegant sinuous design is based on the distinctive material properties of acrylic stone combined with advanced digital design and fabrication techniques. Generative modeling and analyzation tools were used to maximize the available area on each sheet of 12mm “HI-MACS solid surface” and minimize stress due to bending. The design was adopted according to these parameters and split in three parts to be manufacturable from standard sheet dimensions. The 2D-CNC cut flat pieces were then vacuum formed on 3-axis CNC milled MDF molds and afterwards seamlessly glue-joint to form a single monolithic shell. The wings on each side appear to hardly touch the ground and emphasize the floating appearance of the chaise. They also enable the user to gently rock back and forth while relaxing on the smooth and durable surface.
Four prototypes have so far been realized in Alpine White, Fiery Red and Black. The project is still under development but different colors are available on demand.

Washed up on the beach by the Ogden Point Breakwater (top right). Unfortunately for me there was another photographer shooting this float during the entire "sunset" so I didnt get in on the action until the light was essentially gone. I still like the B&W conversion though.
Black card technique plus a grad ND used to keep the sky in check.
Filled with vibrant floats, dancing dragons, prancing lions, stilt walkers, wushu masters, performers of different races in their traditional costumes and many, many more, the annual Chingay Parade is the largest street performance and float parade in Asia. It is a uniquely Singaporean Lunar New Year tradition, held during the first weekend of the Lunar New Year, celebrated by Chinese, Malays, Indians and Eurasians alike.
The word Chingay is equivalent to the Mandarin zhuang yi (妆艺), which means "the art of costume and masquerade" in the Hokkien dialect.

FORT NORFOLK, Va. -- A mesh bag full of 1,000 oyster spat, or baby oysters, is zip-tied shut to keep predators out as they grow Oct 2, 2011. The mesh bags are then put in oyster floats, which hold oysters about one foot under the surface of the water and keep oysters from being buried by sediment or scavenged by predators while they grow. Norfolk District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has partnered with a local elementary to build floats and house oyster spat along the shores of the district’s property on the Elizabeth River – the floats are the first step to building a sanctuary oyster reef.
