At tonight's float-planning meeting (for the SoFo float in the upcoming Zippity Doo Dah Parade), everybody except Zora seemed camera shy. She's a wonderful dog. A short video of her that I took last year is here.

Elizabeth Calder, the donor, was here from 1965 to 1970 – Her husband, Chris Calder was an engineer for the Public Works Department (PWD) for the WA Government and worked in the Ord from January 1964 to 1970 – In 1968 he was the site engineer to get power and roads in place for construction to start on the Top Dam site. We first received a Cotton Festival program from Elizabeth in 2015, since received a 2nd archive with several other unique documents and most recently this 35mm slide collection in May 2018.

We are building an art float with friends and neighbors for this year’s Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.

Our float for this parade features the Bamboodu Theater, a mobile puppet stage I created for civic events and art shows. Our first show stars Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. As music plays, a Mr. Trump’s recent tweets and alternative facts appear on a news ticker. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head.

As we march, we will invite parade watchers to sing along the inspiring poem by Emma Lazarus about the Statue of Liberty (“Give me your tired, your poor …”). Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to change the world through civic action.

I am making this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country.

In this photo session, we were joined by journalist Paul Liberatore and photographer James Cacciatore, who are reporting about this float for the Independent Journal, Marin County’s main newspaper. It was a pleasure to welcome them both and introduce them to our team.

I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors who are helping bring it to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.

Our Bamboodu Float is coming along beautifully, and we can’t wait to show it off at the parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.

At the wet mill, the managers demonstrated how the cherry was first weighed for lot size, than given the "float test" to inspect for defect and other uniformity issues. First the cherry is weighed and tallied, then a 5 kilo sample of cherry is taken from the farmer's lot. From that, 1 liter of cherry is given a test wherein it's dumped into a bucket of water; whatever floats is skimmed off and weighed, and whatever doesn't float is also sorted by sight for unripe, overripe, and damaged coffee. Those defects or inadequate cherry are then factored into the farmer's overall lot by percentage in a computer database, and the calculations result in an invoice which the farmer can then accept or reject. Upon acceptance, the farmer's payment is transferred directly to a kind of banking card which is a benefit of being a part of the program; the farmer has instant access to that money.

To get the feeling of Mardi Gras year-round, visit Mardi Gras World, the largest float designing and building facility in the world. Here more than 80 percent of the floats that journey down New Orleans' streets during the Carnival season are designed and built.

Begun in 1947 by float designer and builder Blaine Kern, Mardi Gras World provides visitors with the opportunity to don authentic Mardi Gras costumes and tour enormous warehouses filled with floats. The tour includes a short video and guide who is quite knowledgeable about Mardi Gras history and customs. And for a taste of Mardi Gras, king cake and piping hot New Orleans coffee are served.

During the tour, visitors learn about the many traditions surrounding Mardi Gras parades, balls and music, as well as the intricacies of float designing and building. Mardi Gras floats began rumbling down New Orleans streets in 1837 with mule-drawn carriages. Today the tradition continues with sophisticated mega-floats, which hold more than 200 masked riders and are lit with fiber optic cables and laser lights.

We created a political art float with friends and neighbors for the 2017 Mill Valley Memorial Day Parade.

The Bamboodu Theater is a puppet show on wheels, starring Lady Liberty and Mr. Trump. Each time Trump says something wrong, Liberty hits him on his thick, bobbing head. A news ticker displays some of Mr. Trump’s latest fake news tweets.

Parade watchers will be invited to sing along the inspiring poem on liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses …”

We built this float in my front yard with a wonderful team at the Mill Valley Community Action Network (MVCAN), a local political group which I recently joined to resist the conservative takeover of our country. Through this interactive art experience, we hope to engage people of all ages to get engaged in political action.

In this final session, we rehearsed our Bamboodu Theater performance and practiced our sing-along. We then loaded the float in a van, to transport it to the parade on Monday, May 29, 2017.

I’m very grateful to all our friends and neighbors helped us bring this project to life: Danny Altman, Laura Boles, Phyllis Florin, David Glad, Peter Graumann, Edward Janne, Suz Lipman, Charlene Lundgren, Jean Marie Murphy and Mark Petrakis and Martha Roush, to name but a few.

This summer I got to work with Rock Paper Robot on their Float Table. Magnetized wooden cubes and steel cables hold the pieces together, and can support decorative items up to five pounds. This playful piece merges high design and classical physics.
