I really like how this turned out. It's just a small plant or flower, whatever, that I saw along the sidewalk. Bugs and bees seem to like them. This one is still green but it turns to yellow. Not sure what it's called but it certainly is interesting when you see it close up.
For the background I used a Church's chicken box and the rest is simply reflection from a glass table. The really interesting effect is how it seems to float and that the table is invisible.
This was an incredible float during Rose Parade 2008. View is from our third-story offices in Old Pasadena.

Large colorful glass balls, up to 40 inches in diameter, fill an antique boat in this exhibition by Dale Chihuly at San Francisco's de Young Museum. Chihuly calls these orbs his 'Niijima Floats' . He was inspired to create the Niijima floats after visiting friends in Niijima, an island in Tokyo Bay. They are reminiscent of traditional Japanese fishing floats and are among the largest free-blown forms ever created. Chihuly began the series in 1991, experimenting by using glass made from Niijima's beach sand. The floats were installed along the island's coast, many of which were sent out to sea. To this day, millions of traditional fishing floats still drift in the Pacific trade currents. It's good luck to find one on the beach.
The boat and orbs are reflected against the black glass bottom they are set upon. It's a remarkable display. No flash photography was allowed. The speckles of white light reflected on the glass bottom were from overhead lights that illuminated the display.
John the Milk and the Whife and Sloper milk float - both driver and vehicle still going strong. The milk float pics are mostly from Barleylands Show with "John the Bus" driving it.

This is part of a continuing experiment using a diy variable neutral density filter created by pairing a linear polariser with a circular polariser. I described the technique here.
The 1947 electric milk float (until 1960 it was a bread van) was invited to do a few circuits of the arena inbetween military displays. The driver on this occasion was formerly a pilot. Being food related and just post-war, it was exhibited near the Ministry of Food display.
The infamous Homecoming, 1968 float from the other side. "Grayson-Field-Dickinson" refers to the three dorms in the Orchard Hill quad that worked together on the float. A friend of mine asked if I had a view from the other side that showed a spelling error and yes, you can see it. I won't mention any names to protect the (not so) innocent.

Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, part of the Lake District in Cumbria, England and fed by the River Brathay, River Rothay, Cunsey Beck, and Trout Beck. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial. .

They were celebrating gay pride in the Lavender District when the zombie pandemic swept the city and chaos ensued. They were going to save all this zombie killing business for the breeders but 130 Mai Tais later it just seemed like a good idea. So they turned their pride float into the gayest, most ridiculous zombie killing vehicle of all time! Lets meet the crew and check out all the features, shall we?
Pulling the float along at a steady 10 mph is Petey the Pirate in his pretty pink tractor rigged with a zombie haulin’ scoop. Onboard, under the palm trees, Bruce tends the tiki bar and serves drinks to Ellen and her life parter Sam. George and Michael pose for their 2nd anniversary photo while Frankie Hollywood snaps the picture. Devon, Ramone Fabian and Fulgencio guard the port side rail looking like some unnamed disco supergroup while on the starboard side Keyshaun holds his piece gangsta style, yo! “Madame” Hedwig “mans” the wench and hauls up a couple of netted zombie to their impending doom while Butch tends the starboard gun turret in her purple bus driver’s uniform. Midships has the goriest scenes onboard...they rigged a buzz saw that really spins when you push the float along! “Lady” Divine, in a stunning Victorian dress, has just recently sawed a hapless zombie in two and is sweeping the gruesome remains down a blood streaked ramp and into the rear cargo hold. Brian The Bear stands above and helps spear the zombie goop into the holding chamber. On the upper deck, Billy Jean and Gertrude share a moment by the cannon (both are recent graduates at UMASS Amherst with a major in feminist studies) while the flamboyant Captain Stubing mans the ship’s wheel. With spotlights, cannons harpoons and guns facing in every direction, the unthinking zombie masses don’t have a chance against this festive gaggle of gays!
This was built for the Zombie Apocalypse Killfest ’09! build challenge over at LUGNuts and because I have a sense of humor. In a post-apoc world of badass gray, brown and black vehicles, I wanted something a little more strange, funny and memorable. I hope this did the trick!
Milk floats abandoned in the Co-op transport yard at Windsor Street, August 1991. Visible are 106AVP (with original body), D260MFC (I think!) a Sherpa float, and 108AVP which had been rebodied in the 1980s.
