Our first winter storm is blowing through.

(Anyone in this area interested in taking my field-trip based photography course starting next weekend should contact me through Flickr mail. There is space for one more participant.)

First bloom of the season from my potted Phalaenopsis grown on a windowsill.

The moment of the first snow. There is always something magical about the first snow and how it lights up the landscape. The snow has all now melted, but I also love the darkness and the mood of this season.

Thanks to Flickr for featuring my work on this platform!

This Itoh peony gets its name ‘First Arrival’ as it is one of the first hybrid peonies to bloom in the year. This is a semi-double flower variety of peony that has crinkly lavender-pink flowers.

The exquisite blossoms gradually become redder closer to the center of the flower. The center of the Itoh peony flower looks like a magenta and yellow-colored spiky ball. These large flowers can be as many as 40 on each plant with each one measuring around 8” (20 cm) across.

First leaves on an ornamental cherry tree. The bloom was coming to an end very quickly and I was able to catch the transition from its very exuberant to its leafy state.

Happy Thanksgiving !

I have thousands of images in my portfolio, but this is the first owl photograph that I have ever captured. They seem to have alluded me over the years until yesterday late evening.

I photographed this beautiful guy as the evening light was fading. Unfortunately he was well over 100 yards away from me, so I had to push the limits of my Nikon D 500 with a 200-500 mm lens. It required me to shoot at a fast shutter speed and a very high ISO. There is more noise in the image than I like to see, however I was still thrilled to finally get my first owl image! :-)

This image was captured at the Ankeny Wildlife Refuge near Corvallis Oregon.

First snow for autumn 2022, one day before equinox. Ground is not frozen, and temperatures remain (relatively) warm, so this first snow is not expected to stay with us.

Last year, beginning on exactly this day, we had four days of steady snowfall, accumulating 16 inches... (41 cm) which remained all winter. Fingers crossed that isn't happening this year.

Back in 2019 we got a handful of Nanking Cherries from one of our trees, but this year we got cherries on all three trees. This is the first year for the cherries on this tree. We have covered all three with bird netting, we want the cherries, they are so delicious!
