Using a plastic bag, I picked-up the dead rat by its tail and put it in the nearby litter-bin.

I've never held a rat before and was surprised how heavy it was.

Local newspapers occasionally headline residents' and traders' complaints about rats. Here's an example from the Hornsey Journal. "A Plague of Rats" reports on Crouch End restaurateurs kicking up a stink about ripped food waste bags left out for collection.

Have the numbers of rats increased? Ray Dodds, my friend and former Haringey councillor, thinks that pre-privatisaton and abolition of the GLC, there was far greater co-ordination between the local councils, Railtrack/Network Rail and the Water companies in baiting. Which kept the rat population under greater control.

Milder winters are another factor. And a supply of food left on the street or in an alleyway will help keep all rodents sleek and well-fed.

§ This week I learned that our English word 'rodent' comes from the Latin rodere = to gnaw. Which is also Sanskrit: radati = 'he gnaws'.

First time makeover, first time dressing, first photo shoot. Not too bad.

First time in Grand Canyon I didn't see it! (This was the second!). Why? Snow and fog. We went back 4 years later and it was absolutely worth it. Loved it, and would love to go back one day to do more. We did go the extra mile and do the North Rim though. Off the beaten track!

I'm showing you guys my practice shots from these commercial type edits. It's not exactly my thing but like I said I'm trying to expand my knowledge. I thought I'd try a skin re-touch eye enhance type shot. Any tips or suggestions?

Montepulciano what a beautiful city! The first time I've been to Montepulciano everything I had in mind was the song of Hooverphonic ... which also has nothing to do with the Tuscan town. I remember that I had parked my car in the "low" parking: bad idea if you have two strollers! In the end I was crazy tired, I had not understood the town and I was also angry and hungry. Luckily I went back three more times, I was gradually losing the strollers and I began to appreciate the incredible nature of this wonderful town. The medieval urban layout is precisely of the fifteenth century. Montepulciano is built so to speak, around the tip of a hill, and so it can be reached either from above, or from below, but, in any direction, it follows that the streets are narrow and the houses tall ... there is little light in Montepulciano and maybe that's what makes it suitable for a town of vampires ... not everyone knows that the famous scenes of Volterra in New Moon actually were shot in Montepulciano. According to local gossip aesthetics has little to do with the choice ... seems that the municipal authorities of Volterra did not like the idea of the occupation by the film crew, who for the time of the shooting, would have disturbed the regular city traffic. So the producers have turned to Montepulciano, which, even imagining the interesting tourist impact, did not need asking twice. In fact Montepulciano with its narrow streets, many underground, the little light is suitable for vampire stories ... the basements must be said, are mostly used as wineries in Montepulciano because they produce an excellent wine ... not to mention the excellent food ... the only real danger in this beautiful city, is to take a few pounds and spend all your left money in beautiful handmade really beautiful leather shoes and bags that they sell and which have very competitive prices. Another danger is to slip on these streets so steep, one wonders how the bus driver manages the job (of course they have mini-buses). There is also a yearly race, in which the contestants must travel through the city pushing a barrel weighing 80 kg. for about 2 km. and these riders are true athletes usually provided by other disciplines ... I can not imagine myself making such a feat. One of these leather crafter, just to go back to movies, provides large books and leather notebooks at Harry Potter himself :-). In town, the architectural monuments can be visited, and all the buildings are of great value, but the one I like most is the beautiful church of San Biagio designed by Antonio da Sangallo, just outside the city walls. Wonderful! What geometry and balance. The plan is taken from Filippo Brunelleschi's works, and was also used for the original design by Bramante and Michelangelo for St. Peter's Basilica. And of course do not forget the poet Agnolo Poliziano, as the name says, a native of Montepulciano. I left my small contribution to Origami for the people.

First time to photograph the ink given off by this sea slug.

I was taking photos and Dan was on the lead following her everywhere she went. At one point she decided to climb up on some rock behind a tree and Dan had to follow behind and climb all over the rocks as well. Wish I had the video on!!!

I visited Crosby for the first time today - great place!

I'm not sure if I love or hate this image. I don't normally edit as much as I have here but I think it probably works.

I'd love some constructive feedback.

I finally got around to making some bruschetta (first time ever!). I was happily surprised with how good it turned out. The tomato taste was mild and didn't overwhelm the dish.

Here is what I used:

basil

3 vine tomatoes

olive oil

garlic

salt

Essential Baking Co's Columbia bread (from a dumpster)

I cut up the tomatoes and discarded a bunch of the center gunk. I mixed the tomatoes with salt, olive oil, and basil. I halved a piece of garlic and rubbed it on the bread. Then I put the tomato mixture on the bread and broiled on low for a while.

it took me so long to make this and i'm kinda proud for how it turned out considering it's my first time doing a story movie thingy :)

it's suppose to be like a fake movie trailor and the movie is called for the first time.

considering i'm forever alone and have nothing to do over the summer holidays if you guys liked the video it would be pretty cool if you guys sent requests in and it'd be quite fun :) but i'm just saying i'd be better at teen things lol (i.e miley, demi, selena, jo-bros, j-biebs, 1D etc) but yeah :))

did you like it?

is it an alright job for my first time?

if it was a movie would you see it?

First time I tried astrophotography.

Last summer this bulb bloomed for me for the first time. It was a very exciting event for me. I first read about this species in a paper catalogue from Paul Christian when I was 15. I was very intrigued to learn then that there were two Crinum species in existence that lacked peduncles, pseudostems and required a dry winter dormancy; all quite unlike any Crinum I had yet encountered. The enticing description of its fragrance sealed the fate of my interest in Crinum acaule and C. minimum, but it wouldn't be until 12 years later that I finally began to grow them.

The flower emerged as a surprise, and very fast. This bulb has now bloomed a second time now for us, which Nhu has captured very well: here.

Crinum acaule produces a large bulb with strappy, deeply channelled leaves with ciliate margins. As with Ammocharis, most of its emergent leaves also have truncate tips. Unusual for Crinum spp., it's acaulescent which in this case means that the peduncle (flowering stem) stays in the bulb giving them an oddly beautiful appearance when in bloom.

The flowers are extremely fragrant, especially upon opening at dusk. Flowers are best during the first 18 hours or so, and fade completely within 36 hours of opening. They bloom at the beginning of the growing season, usually in October in KwaZulu-Natal where they are endemic. They grow throughout the summer rains and then go dormant for the dry cooler winter.

Most of their remaining habitat is severely degraded, overgrazed, or planted over with exotic timber. Healthy populations are now largely restricted to roadsides and fire-breaks Charles Craib and Andrew Blackmore have found that well-timed maintenance practices of these fire-breaks employed by the South African Forestry Company Ltd. have actually improved population sizes within these fire-breaks. The mowing of the soil in autumn and winter along with infrequent rotovation allows this rare and beautiful lily to reproduce sexually, while plants within exotic timber plantations do not increase.¹

I grew this in Honolulu in both high and low rainfall areas (Kaimukī, 520mm rain pa and Upper Mānoa, 3550mm pa) in full sun and brought it indoors to dry out during its winter dormancy. It's growing in pure pumice a deep terracotta pot. In habitat temperatures can fall to °C on winter nights but it bloomed for me with only maximum winter lows of 13°C.
