The first time I saw this marvelous skyscraper was during the annual Formula 1 race and shortly after I watched its construction and building process on NatGeo Channel. Few months later I finally had to chance to see it live, it was standing in front of me, tall and elegant, towering over the Abu Dhabi skyline.

Capital Gate (a.k.a. the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi) is one of the tallest buildings in the city and the focal point of the Capital Center/Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre master development.

In June 2010, Guinness World Records certified Capital Gate as the "World's furthest leaning man-made tower".

This is something I have never seen before. In all of my years living and visiting after moving away, I have never seen a Norfolk Southern locomotive on or leading a train on this line.

I saw this train pass on the Dunn, NC webcam (25 miles north of Fayetteville) about an hour before I left my folks house. I had already chalked this up as a loss. I went downtown to catch a different train. Then I saw the train appear and noticed the front head lights were too high for a CSX locomotive. This train had to stop between Dunn and Fayetteville, and this first time sighting happened. Norfolk Southern CW44AC6M #4272 leads with Canadian Pacific CW44AC #9801 trailing on a southbound ethanol train (102 cars) on the South End Sub in Fayetteville, NC.

blackcap (male) ~ sylvia atricapilla

On a grey damp miserable day I spotted a new visitor to the garden. I managed to grab a quick shot but it is noisy (high ISO used) and I had to crop it slightly because of an irritating reflection from the window. The blackcap is on the RSPB Green status list.

Warblers and allies (Sylviidae)

Overview

A distinctive greyish warbler, the male has a black cap, and the female a chestnut one. Its delightful fluting song has earned it the name 'northern nightingale'. Although primarily a summer visitor birds from Germany and north-east Europe are increasingly spending the winter in the UK.

Where to see them

Best looked for in woodland, parks and gardens with plenty of trees and shrubs. In winter will readily come into gardens.

When to see them

Breeding birds arrive in April and May, leaving in September and October. Some European birds winter in the UK, largely in England.

What they eat

Insects and berries.

First Time at the Race This year

On our way home from vacation we spent an afternoon/evening driving through Yellowstone Park. At the highest points there was a bit of snow so we pulled over to park and let Fearghus, our cairn terrier, explore in the snow. Wow, he loved it! He rolled in it and bounced all around before finally resting in it. We were the ones who were a bit cold but he just relished the cooler temperature.

for christmas, i decide to make a cake using fondant. i got some already made fondant from the candy store, and tried to follow the directions from online. boy, it was a mess! the fondant was sticking to everything, even with a ton of powdered sugar to dust the table and my hands. finally i got it to roll out to a big enough sheet to cover the 9"x9" cake, but i poked holes in it by accident. =S my hands were also a nice pink/blue from mixing the food coloring into the fondant. ah well. at least the cake tasted really good. especially after being in the fridge. the recipe for this cake is below:

Yellow cake mix:

¾ cup butter, softened

3 eggs

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

2 ½ teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 ¾ cups sugar

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

1 ¼ cups of milk

1) Preheat oven to 375F degrees. Stir flour, baking powder, salt together, set aside.

2) Beat butter with electric mixer on medium for 30 seconds. Gradually add sugar, about ¼ cup at a time, beating at medium speed for 2 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, then vanilla, beating at medium still. Switch to beat at low speed. Alternately add flour mixture and milk to butter mixture, beating at low speed.

3) Pour into two greased 9"x9" square pans, bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into cake comes out clean. Let cool a bit.

Raspberry Filling:

1 cup sugar

1 cup water

1 bag frozen raspberries or any other berry you like

1) Combine everything in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

2) Lower the heat once it boils and let it continue to simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated, and it has a thick syrup/jam texture to it. About 1 hour.

Ganache

½ cup heavy cream

4 ounces semisweet or dark chocolate (though with dark chocolate, you need to add more cream til it is smooth enough)

Heat the cream in a saucepan to a scald. Add chocolate and continue to whisk until melted and becomes smooth.

Putting it all together

Cut each cake in half horizontally (if needed, trim off tops to level the cakes, i just left them on cause it would be a waste and i am lazy). Cover the top of one cake half with ganache, then place another layer of cake on top. Cover that top with raspberry filling. Place another cake layer, repeat with ganache and last cake piece. Then pour more ganache over the entire cake, allowing it to drip over sides. Spread evenly until the whole cake is covered with chocolate. the cake may be served like this, and it would be delicious, or you can go the extra step and use already-made fondant to decorate like i did above. if you used dark chocolate for the ganache, the combination with the super-sweet fondant makes the cake just right without being too sugary-sweet.

Even though the temperature out suggests it's still the middle of winter around here, the little birds are starting to go through their spring ritual of looking for a place to nest.

I mostly see the chickadees and the house wrens checking out the various birdhouse around the property.

I've only seen the house sparrows nest in the ivy on the house wall. This is the first time I've ever seen a house sparrow really show any interest in the boxes or bottles up under the porch eaves.

I've been seeing a pair carrying nesting material into my Williamsburg bird bottle and I'm hoping they'll decide to stay.

This was my first cross country trip, traveling by Greyhound bus and staying in some of sleaziest flea bag and flop house hotels you ever saw to stretch what meager cash I had. This is in San Francisco near by the Turk Street YMCA where I was staying where some aggressive acting gay guys were cat calling me and my friend as we walked in. All I can say my stay there made me glad I never ran afoul of the penal system in this country.

Video of Snowshoeing -

Snowshoeing for the first time….

The winter so far had been good and I had taken advantage of this fact as much as I could , you never know when the latest dump of snow will be the last dump of snow!!!

For climbing the conditions and snow hadn’t been great but for walking adventures it had been great The two weeks prior to this trip had seen significant accumulations of snow to low levels and after a number of wading trip this year I had decided to purchase some snow shoes I did a bit of research and the MSR shoes were given good ratings , however given the fact that I may not get too much use out of these I decided to opt for a middle of the line pair (cheaper and easily available;)). The Chinooks were ordered online and arrived a couple of day later, perfect timing for a test drive on this trip.

Given I couldn’t get away until 13.30 due to family commitments, I chose to explore an area close to home and not far from GlenAlmond where I head for lots of outdoors fun 

A few weeks ago whilst exploring Buchanty Spout I had noticed a nice hill above the Sma’ Glen with a Cairn near the top. This had taken my interest and scouring the map on Friday I noticed some Landover tracks leading towards its summit- this maybe perfect if there was enough snow cover….

Turns out I didn’t need to worry about that!! Initially I followed a track to a farm that had been compacted down by a plough and farmed but I could see there was a good amount of snow on either side, and it was the fluff powdery kind too. Looked like the snowshoes would get an outing at least!!

As soon as I left the farm track the snow was shin and sometimes knee deep and I hadn’t even started gaining altitude!! I finally gave in and put the snowshoes on. What a difference this made, instantly it felt easier and I was off , taking to the new shoes like a duck to water! It was great fun but was still hard work (not as hard as without them I must say!!). The snow was getting deeper and it was all unconsolidated powder. Given the low height of these hills it had all fallen in the last week or so and it wasn’t until just before the top that I reached anything like neve (the crampons on the underside of the snowshoes worked well on this too!).

I finally made it to the Cairn just before sunset and it was biting cold. The batteries in all but one of the camera died pretty quickly so I didn’t hang around and set off down the hill following my tracks. On descent the snowshoes were even better I found them super useful here and was making good progress homewards in the gathering gloom. I made it back to the car without the need for the head torch, but I wasn’t far away from requiring it!. A grand adventure and I’m already looking forward to getting the snowshoes back on!!

This is one of my professional stage shots. Technically it's borderline for me to put it on any social media platform. I just like the shot too much, so here it is. This is exquisite (in my opinion) and has so much of a narrative. Straight out of camera.

My D750 is just wonderful. It would be amazing to have a better buffer, frame rate and 1/8000th shutter speed. I suppose that's called a D850...........

Another first time model who turned out to be a total natural :)

venturing into mushroom dyeing, and knowing little about mushroom identification, i picked the first sizeable and convenient one i could find, growing growing right at the base of a big douglas fir right at the edge of our driveway, dropped it, whole, into a pot of water on the woodstove along with a small bit of alum-mordanted roving, and - voila - came out with a lovely rich golden orange shade!

after much sleuthing through books and blogs, it turns out, as luck would have it, what looked like a cinnamon roll growing at the base of that tree was a young dyer's polypore, Phaeolus schweinitzii!

...which also means that this tree is dying (no pun intended) but i'll keep an eye out for more mushrooms until then, and make the most of it.

First time in the water! There wasn't much of a breeze early in the day. A friend stopped by and took these pictures for us. The only pictures we have that are not from inside the boat! BECALMED!!!!!! We motored out to the harbor and had a great first sail!

Opened to the public only a few weeks ago, I was quick to reserve tickets so that Susan and I could check out the latest art repositry. And, with the exception of a few works that made me scoff, enjoy it we did

Friendship is absolutely human. It has something for which there is no inbuilt mechanism in your biology; it is nonbiological. Hence one rises in friendship, one does not fall in friendship. It has a spiritual dimension.
