Residents of an old motel in Selma, CA cry as they watch their home burn. Over 50 people are homeless because of the fire.
The 51,000+-acre Sheepshead fire burned almost entirely in open desert country dominated by grass and shrubs. Most of the fire was on BLM land and the rest was on private land. No National Forest land was involved in this fire and very little forest burned.
The Sheepshead fire was located in southeast Oregon, 75 miles southeast of Burns. The fire was ignited by lightning on August 9, 2001, and spread rapidly in the open shrub and grassland area to more than 10,000 acres by August 11. Passing thunderstorms, gusty winds and multiple new fires impeded containment efforts. This complex of fires consisted of the Sheepshead and Stone House fire.

Got a call from my brother along the road asking if i knew where the black smoke was coming from that he could see out of his lounge window... I went to investigate. Just as i arrived at a pretty good view point, one of three fire engines went whizzing by.
My brother turned up and we took a walk down to the scene. Someone had set fire to something in a car garage workshop. Rumours were either a car or a pile of tyres.
