Well the fire is now installed and lit for the first time. Just a quick burn to harden the seals
It's been absolutely freezing here recently - the North Island has been lashed by storms and strong winds, and it's been raining incessantly for the last week.
So I lit the fire tonight, and Otto and I cosied ourselves up on the sofa and watched dvds for the day.
This is a very rare natural occurence known as a circumhorizon arc. They occur when the sun is at least 58° above the horizon, and only in the presence of cirrus clouds. Thus, it can not be observed at locations north of 55°N or south of 55°S.

A Fire Truck Extravaganza was held at the New Hartford Shopping Center in New Hartford NY. Trucks from the counties around Utica were represented.
This is the view from some way away, unfortunately—over the wall onto what were fields backing onto our building.
The buildings on fire are an industrial complex. Just off-camera to the left is the Saint John Ogilvie Primary School. I think behind the trees on the left-hand side of the photo is the school caretaker's house, but I could be wrong. The wind is obviously not blowing in a favourable direction.
