I did not take this photo; it was from local news. However, I wanted to share what we have been witnessing here in the incredible 16 wildfires that are still burning in S. California. This photo is of a helicopter that can suck in water from local areas and make several, rapid water drops. The helicopter is making a drop by Malibu Beach.
The fire fighter crews are simply heroic and have done an amazing job in impossible conditions. Wind gusts over mountainous terrain have been steady between 40mph to 100 mph. Fortunately, the winds have died. Many fire crews have been working for 36 hours with no breaks. Fire crews have come from all over California, Arizona, Nevada, and Canada...thanks to all.
Fire and Ice Show in Whistler BC.
Every Sunday evening, the WhistlerBlackcomb Ski and Snow Schools put on a big air show at the base of Whistler Mountain for visitors and locals alike. Each show crescendos with the addition of fire spinners, burning hoops and finally fireworks. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen one before!
This is the Easter Fire we went to on Saturday. An Easter Fire is an old tradition to burn the ghosts of last winter and to welcome spring. During the past couple of months, people brought their garden waste (branches, leaves, tree trunks) and even old furniture to the fireplace. I just love the smell of many many fires in the night before Easter and this ancient pagan celebration of spring.
This was taken on a moonless night. I had a 47 second exposure on f5.6.
I used a flash at the back of the subjects head, then used a red glowing tube and waved it all around the subject.
It makes an amazing effect!
It looks like a cauldron! I don't know how I pulled this picture off, but I -- and my mother -- love it!
