The aftermath of a fire at Gunnersbury Triangle nature reserve in Chiswick. The London Fire Service was called to the site on the evening of Tuesday July 16 and these photos were taken early the next morning. Thankfully just a relatively small area was affected but it could have been far worse with the site tinder dry in this 31C London heatwave. No cause has been established but it might be something as simple as someone leaving a glass bottle on the ground and it later being caught by the rays of the sun. Fire officers are pictured here back at the site the morning after to deal with any further problems. It appears fire / heat can travel underground in the peat soil. Gunnersbury Triangle, currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, is a unique site bordered on its three sides by London Underground's District Line, the London Overground and Bollo Lane. It is adjacent to Chiswick Business Park and Chiswick Park tube station.

Fire Salamanders on the move in the rain. These are possibly pregnant females looking for a nice sheltered aquatic environment so they can give birth to their many larvae safely.
As the weather is crap, it's dark wet and windy. So not worth going out to take anything , I put a fire on and had a play with the camera........

These look like relatively innocent, very large anthills until you step on them or poke them... then they look like this almost instantaneously. It looks like I've disrupted the Queen in this one (just left of center with black body and white wings), which must have REALLY ticked them off.
If you happen to disturb one of these nests, back away a few feet as quickly as you can. They have NO sense of humor.
This is the Easter Fire we went to on Saturday. An Easter Fire is an old tradition to burn the ghosts of last winter and to welcome spring. During the past couple of months, people brought their garden waste (branches, leaves, tree trunks) and even old furniture to the fireplace. I just love the smell of many many fires in the night before Easter and this ancient pagan celebration of spring.
