First I laid out the shape of the floor and position the fire pit wall to get a sense of how it will look.

I put a whole log that had rotted out from the center on top of the fire, I kinda liked the funky way it burned from the center out with a flame coming out the hole in the top of it.

A lovely evening camp fire

It's all about the background. The flame, the sparkles, the glowing wick - all somewhat interesting, but the jet black background helps the candle to stand out. Best of all, the image was not photoshopped, using natural low light to create a very dark background.
