It's all about the background. The flame, the sparkles, the glowing wick - all somewhat interesting, but the jet black background helps the candle to stand out. Best of all, the image was not photoshopped, using natural low light to create a very dark background.

At 10PM on May 14, 2021 the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to a reported brush fire in the 1800 block of N Michael Lane in Pacific Palisades. The fire was located back in a canyon with steep, difficult to navigate terrain. Most of the area is inaccessible by any vehicles (to include four-wheel drive brush patrols). An air battle ensued throughout the night with water dropping helicopters from both LAFD and Los Angeles County Fire Department while firefighters worked to make access by ground. By 6:30AM on 15 May, the fire was estimated at 15 acres. Unfortunately, by 4:30PM an additional burn area emerged north of the original fire. This fire then continued to grow and reached 750 acres by nightfall. Due to the location of the fire, the incident transitioned to a Unified Command with LACoFD and LAFD. At 1PM on May 16, the fire was estimated at 1325 acres with 0% containment. Neighboring agencies responded with mutual aid resources to include Ventura County Fire Department and Orange County Fire Authority. As of 6:45AM on 17 May, 2021 it remained an active incident. #PalisadesFire

A fire and drumming show, with a mix of juggling, poi, fire eating and glowing ball rolling - generally great fun!

Driving along the 210 coming home from some coffee. I saw this site from a distance. I went home as fast as I could which was pasadena. I grabbed my nikon with my trusty 300mm and 50mm I went into northern regions above arcadia/sierra madre. There I caught numerous neighbors taking pics as well as packing their belongings. I tried to capture as many shots as I could through the pile up of cars and people.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) -- A rare sight was seen in the sky above West Michgian Tuesday afternoon.
It is called a fire rainbow or circumhorizontal arc and occurs only when the sun is more than 58 degrees above the horizon.
The sun shines through cirrus clouds that are made of plate-like ice crystals. The light is refracted or bent as it passes through the crystals. Each color of the solar spectrum bends at a slightly different angle, so it makes what looks like a rainbow.
A true rainbow would only be visible with your back toward the sun, and usually when the sun is lower on the horizon.

Shadows from a fire escape fall across the front of a San Francisco building
I made this photograph late in the day back in early September, on a street photography shoot with a group of like-minded folks in San Francisco. We met in the late afternoon, wandered about for a while in the beautiful late-day light, then broke for dinner before going back out to photograph after dark.
One one hand, you could probably find a similar scene in many other cities. On the other hand, it also evokes the architecture of San Francisco, where buildings are packed tightly together, often with seemingly little regard for their aesthetic appearance when viewed from the street — with the result being very utilitarian facades, often featuring metal gates, fire escapes, and sometimes a worn and weathered appearance. This street runs almost directly east-west, so late in the day the sunlight was falling across the front of the building at a low angle and casting strong shadows.

They tell you where you need to go
They tell you when you'll need to leave
They tell you what you need to know
They tell you who you need to be
But everything inside you knows
There's more than what you've heard
There's so much more than empty conversations
Filled with empty words
And you're on fire
When He's near you
You're on fire
When He speaks
You're on fire
Burning at these mysteries
Give me one more time around
Give me one more chance to see
Give me everything You are
Give me one more chance to be... (near You)
Cause everything inside me looks like
Everything I hate
You are the hope I have for change
You are the only chance I'll take
When I'm on fire
When You're near me
I'm on fire
When You speak
And I'm on fire
Burning at these mysteries
These mysteries...
I'm standing on the edge of me
I'm standing on the edge of everything I've never been before.
And i've been standing on the edge of me
Standing on the edge
And I'm on fire
When You're near me
I'm on fire
When You speak
(Yea) I'm on fire
Burning at these mysteries... these mysteries... these mysteries
Ah you're the mystery
You're the mystery

after a hard day of skiing or snowshoeing - when I can't take another step forward - it's good to sit in front of a roaring fire, with a cold beer and some hot fries to restore the soul.
LAFD fought an intense fire on two fronts. A brush fire along the SB 2 Fy extended into a large church adjacent to the trees. Roof collapse forced a defensive operation and firefighters worked to save important documents and religious items. Two firefighters received minor injuries.
