Still sporting the colors of Hawaiian Airlines, this former American Airlines tri jet (N132AA) had recently been converted to an MD-10 (N568FE) for FedEx in 2006. Here it is outside of FedEx Hangar 12 for a pre-service check before flying to get fresh paint. It only flew in the purple for three years before being stored at Victorville in 2009.

Not the most exciting traffic for those of us based in Hong Kong, however the three-runway ops give us the opportunity to get 25L landings allowing for an attractive, diverse background for photos.

Current practice results in a reversion to two-runway ops at 1600 hrs local.

Airbus A300B4-622R(F) N721FD (477) climbing away from 25L in a steep ascent being quite light it appears at KLAX.

First delivered to United Airlines in June 1974 as N1825U, this 46-year-old trijet is now seeing out the end of its career as a freighter with FedEx.

Once a passenger DC10 for United Airlines, N383FE was converted to an MD10 for FedEx and is seen here on Taxiway Alpha at Memphis International Airport.

Again, another highlight of the trip for me was catching this FedEx DC-10. Due to thick fog in Miami she diverted to Orlando (MCO) whilst operating Memphis-Miami, allowing me to catch her when she positioned down from Orlando once the fog had cleared.

N118FE FedEx B763ER landing at dawn..

On the FedEx ramp in Memphis sits an aircraft with quite the history. In 1994, a disgruntled pilot, who was jumpseating, attempted to hijack N306FE while en route to SJC from MEM. The heroic actions of the crew prevented this from happening and the aircraft successfully returned to Memphis. This aircraft was retired to Victorville, California, in February 2023.

The day before the 2019 Bell Fort Worth Alliance Air Show I stood near the end of the runway to watch some of the aircraft arrivals. I caught this FedEx cargo plane landing.

One of the oldest aircraft in the FedEx fleet at 42.5 years old, N321FE's days of service have come to an end. The MD10-30F was originally delivered to Sabena in August 1980 as DC10-30 OO-SLE. It came to FedEx in July 1992. The last revenue flight for this trijet was Toluca International Airport Mexico to Memphis on December 29, 2022. Its final flight will be to storage in Victorville, California.

Having crossed Runway 9/27, a FedEx MD10 taxis to the ramp on the northside of Memphis International.

What are the odds...out of all the FedEx MD11's in the fleet (currently around 64), I saw this same airframe last spring on my Phoenix trip (www.flickr.com/photos/md11forever/9410276553/)...but now in a MUCH colder environment we see it departing Chicago O'Hare on January 19, 2014. In the background, an AA 737 is throwing up a nice rooster tail of snow as it rolls for departure on 32L.

"S/N" is the aircraft's serial number. "L/N" is a Boeing code denoting what order the airframe came off the production line. "F/N" refers to an individual airline's fleet numbering system. Not all airlines use a fleet number; not all manufacturers use a line number.
