Having run-round their train, Ludihana WDM3A pair 16642 and 16533 are ready to depart Abohar and continue their journey with train 04551 09h40 Bathinda to Fazilka Passenger on 29th January 2023.

The Sikh policeman to the right of the loco got particularly upset by me crossing the tracks to take a photo. He got his wallet out and waved a few hundred rupees! I pointed out that everyone else was crossing the line and there didn’t ought to be one rule for tourists and another for local people. I didn’t bother returning here again.

Ludhiana-based WDM-3A 18942 storms through Bhaini Khurd station in Haryana with the daily 02:00 Fazilka to Delhi [FKA-DLI] Express service. This Mail Express would have travelled via Bhatinda Junction, Dhuri and Ambala and was making sound progress to complete the 521 kms. journey [with 27 intermediate stops] close to the 12:45 booked arrival time in India's capital.
According to the IRFCA database, this former WDM-2 locomotive was delivered in March 1987 and re-built in 2016 at DLMW, Patiala. The records also indicate it was withdrawn in October 2019.

Sri Ganga Nagar Surprise: Ludihana based WDG3A 13281 at Sri Ganga Nagar with train 14602 11h30 Hanumangarh - Firozpur Cantt via Fazilka passenger on 8th December 2024. We’d seen this loco depart the previous afternoon on the 14h00 passenger to Firozpur. It must have then worked 14601 Firozpur to Hanumangarh before returning with 14602. This was the only WDG3A seen on passenger duties around the Punjab during our visit, a complete contrast to a couple of years previously, where about 50% of trains were hauled by the class. Taking a photo at Sri Ganga Nagar has proved difficult in the past. The RPF (Railway Police Force) usually pop out of the woodwork and start creating a fuss about photography.
LKO WDG4 No. 12211 arrives at Delhi Jn. with train 14732 02h00 Fazilka - Delhi Jn - an InterCity Express which takes a very circuitous route from Bathinda to Dhuri and Ambala, before heading down the main line. The train was running about 30 mins late and turned around fairly rapidly to form 12481 to Sri Ganga Nagar with a WDP3A for power.

Coupling up of Ludhiana's WDM3A 18949 at Abohar Junction as it completes the required run-round of train 54559, the 09:25 Bathinda Jn - Fazilka Jn Passenger. Monday 12th March 2018.
This WDM3A is getting on now (built 1987) and many of its contemporaries are heading for shunting work or scrapping. This one has been retrofitted with the new fangled dynamic brake and APU unit (Auxiliary Power Unit - a little donkey engine to keep air and batteries topped up, so as not to run the fuel hungry main engine when idling), so it must have a few years left in mainline service, one hopes. Although it was a distinctly average performer in the noise department.

Ludhiana’s WDM3A No. 16533R at Bathinda with train 54559 09h25 Bathinda to Fazilka (via Abohar Jn) Passenger on 25th September 2018. The line from Abohar to Fazilka has only been open a few years and was one of the reasons for visiting this area.
A “Pushpak” sandwich at Abohar Jn on 8th December 2024. 15506 is working train 04552 13h15 Fazilka to Bathinda Passenger - a virtually empty train, whilst classmate 15531 is working train 14526 13h35 Sri Ganga Nagar to Ambala Cantt InterCity - fairly packed. I thought WDP3s had finished for good until my visit in January 2023, where they were still active and here we are at the end of Alco use in India and these old wrecks are still putting in the miles. *** STOP PRESS*** :- The electrification on the line to Sri Ganga Nagar was energised at the weekend, so that’ll be the end of these Alco adventures soon.

GZB WAP-5 30028 arrives Ambala Cantt leading 12231 Lucknow NR - Chandigarh Express and LDH WDM-3A 14103 waits for the starter hauling 14732 Fazilka - Delhi Intercity Express.
Tughlakabad WDP3A 15509 starts off from Malout with train 12482, the 05:55 Shri Ganganagar Jn - Delhi Jn InterCity Express. Monday 19th March 2018. Part of the hopeless coaching link that includes the Ganganagar - Haridwar and Delhi - Fazilka ICs. Insufficient time at both ends to service the stock or soak up any delay results in a seemingly endless cycle of lateness. Although, it worked to my advantage this morning and I was able to get down the line to intercept two DP3s.
It was running 100 minutes late but faring better than 14712, the Haridwar InterCity, although booked ahead of 12482 by an hour and a half was behind and four hours down! I waited for the latter hoping for an unsmapled WDP3A - it produced 15511 which I'd only previously had one 18 km run off back in 2009.
Taken with the 60mm phone attachment lens and displaying the loss of quality at the edges, although reasonably sharp in the centre I'm not convinced it was a wise investment!
The final Alco powered passenger train I’ll witness in India? Who knows, I’ve typed that many times before already! TKD WDP3A 15537 departs Abohar Jn with train 54559 09h40 Bathinda to Fazilka Passenger on 15th March 2025. Vietnam beckoned next…

Ludihana based WDG3A 13617 departs Malout with train 04551 09h40 Bathinda to Fazilka passenger on 17th March 2024.
The loco had smoked profusely departing every station, so we walked down the line in the baking sun to get a “clag” shot, only for the driver to depart like a gnome making no smoke whatsoever. All we succeeded in doing was emptying the contents of the adjacent cricket pitch of players to see what on earth we were up to!
Ludihana based WDM3A 16305 at Fazilka with train 04552 13h15 Fazilka to Bathinda Passenger on 16th March 2024. Some other friends had visited this station a month ago and the area wasn't electrified. A month later and now look at it! The wires are going up at warp speed.

WDG3A 14825 gets into it's stride, chugging away with it's huge train shortly after leaving Fazilka Jn. In the UK, two Cows next to the mainline, let alone a single one would be a huge safety of the line emergency incident resulting in delays on the network far and wide. Here in India, it's a every day scene, and nothing to be alarmed about, the Cows know the score !

In between our morning and evening commutes between Patiala and Bathinda, Indian Railways thoughtfully kicked out a couple of Ludihana WDM3As to keep us entertained. The oldest operable WDM3A in the Indian Railways fleet at the time - 16305 appeared on the 14730 08h45 Fazilka to Rewari Passenger, seen here at Gangsar Jaito (between Kot Kapura Jn and Bathinda) on 12th March 2025.

The SS Fazilka was built in 1890 for the British India Steam Navigation Company. I presume that the initials in the photo album inscription refer to British India.
She carried migrants from England to Brisbane in 1904 but she was primarily used for the transportation of Indian indentured labourers. She was wrecked in 1919
This album was bought from Age Uk in Kendal and dates back to the early 1900's. The original owner must have travelled between Cumbria England and Australia . Special Passenger train at Chandigarh with TKD WDP-1. The destination boards on the coaches had marking " Bhatinda Fazilka Ambala Cantt. It soon left for Ambala Cantt.
TKDs dual EMDs named "Dhillika" WDP-4B 40003 + "Rani Durgavati" WDP-4D 40251 powering 14508 Fazilka - Delhi Intercity curving at MPS!
Our visit to India was a stopover on the way to Vietnam. The only route now with booked or regular Alco haulage is the line from Ambala Cantt to Sri Ganga Nagar, where 4 Tuglakhabad WDP3As rotate around a fixed circuit. Unfortunately, our visit coincided with a daytime engineering blockade, so the two WDP3A turns which head from Bathinda to either Sri Ganga Nagar or Fazilka in the daytime were amended to terminate at Bathinda! So we ended up staying at Patiala (148 kms east of Bathinda) and riding the WDP3As in the evening to the hotel and returning in the morning back to Bathinda. Some long days, but plenty of mileage. TKD WDP3A stands at Bathinda ready to work train 14510 18h20 Bathinda to Ambala Cantt Passenger on 11th March 2025.
