I went back once -- but only ever so briefly -- to see the empty space where Concannon once stood, and felt queasy.
Fast forward to today, here's what I gathered on the internet. On the bottom are pictures of the Concannon model which was put together by Jan-Richart Kikkert and collaborators. Up from there, a model of the addition to Sheats/Goldstein, with a tennis court in the Concannon footprint. The tall palm trees help with orientation. The next model is a still taken from a beautiful video in which owner Jim Goldstein tours main house and (at 03:58) the construction site of the addition and explains what is planned here besides tennis: guest quarters and entertainment spaces, including a night club. Up from there are a couple of pictures and the Google maps satellite shot of the site. It's been ten years since Concannon got torn down, and I feel emotionally ready to call Jim and see all this for myself sometime soon.
From Concannon, I moved into a loft above Sunset Strip, then to Mid Wilshire, then to the beach, and I'm now living in another mid century modern house on the opposite hill, in Baldwin Hills, with a great view of Beverly Hills and far beyond. Two of these homes were major construction and renovation projects, two were relatively easy in and out rentals. But all of them pay homage to Concannon, and as a condition had to work with the Syndecrete furniture made for the Lautner house...

Bonneville Salt Flats International Speedway
The salt flats were formed as ancient Lake Bonneville slowly evaporated and deposited concentrations of salt to this playa. Shorelines carved into the mountainside are visible to the north along the Silver Island range and extend to the Salt Lake valley. named after Captain B.L. Bonneville, an early military explorer of the West, the salt flats measure over 44,000 acres and are primarily public land.
Historically, the flats impeded man's movement westward. Early traders like Jebediah Smith and John Fremont crossed the vast saline plain only to return with awesome stories of the salt's harshness. In 1846, the Donner Reed Party lost animals, wagons and valuable time on the salt. These losses contributed to their late arrival and subsequent disaster in the snowy Sierra-Nevada Mountains. The flats' potential for racing was first recognized in 1896 by W.D. Rishel, who attempted to organize a carriage and bike race. He convinced Ferg Johnson to test drive his Packard here in 1911. In 1914, Teddy Tetzlaff reached 141 mph in his Blitzen Benz. Succeeding years saw many attempts to set faster records. In 1840 Ab Jenkins set 81 new speed records in his Mormon Meteor III, including a 24-hour endurance record of 161 mph. Jet and rocket cars appeared in the 1960's and exceeded the 500 and 600 mph marks.
The speedway, 80 feet wide and 10 miles long. is prepared by the Bureau of Land Management in the early summer. SPeed trials are scheduled throughout the summer and fall. They end when rains cover the area with water. Caution: Salt crust may appear firm, but is often moist and unstable. Enjoy the area, please keep it clean.

This place is easy off and easy on I84. Right off exit 8 headed west and also accessible headed east. Clean bathrooms; attached Dunkin Donuts and a huge store with pretty much anything you want including fresh fruit.

Non amo le pose ma non amo nemmeno rubare ritratti a persone delle quali non so nulla e nemmeno so se sono d'accordo. Un minimo di contatto lo cerco sempre, un sorriso, un gesto, un nome e poi lascio la mia email nel caso il soggetto avesse il piacere di ricevere lo scatto, mi sembra il minimo per ringraziare. In Cina ogni persona per un occidentale è un potenziale ritratto eccezionale, ho selezionato in fase di scatto, pochi ma sensati, forse questo è uno dei migliori.
