CrossFit Auckland and Again Faster Athletes compete at the Wellington Cup 24th and 25th August 2013

This afternoon I played with fast shutter speeds. The intention was to capture the burst of a balloon.

I was assisted by my daughter Naomi who was instantly promoted to ‘Head of Detonation’ and who also came up with the science of larger quantities of coloured water in larger balloons leads to more dramatic effect. Well done and thank you, Naomi.

So after a few attempts to practice timing and to get an effective shutter speed we achieved these four photos. My favourite is the last one that we took (shown above) because we managed to capture the water in the balloon desperately holding its shape just after the collapse of the latex balloon and just before gravity pulled it to the floor. Ninja timing skills sums it up!! I know the backdrop is a bit disappointing but Mrs B refused to let me use her best Irish cotton duvet cover!

This is one of the hot rods caught in a burst of speed driving up Central Avenue In Phoenix, Arizona. The Cruise on Central is a bi-annual tradition and I must say a great time was had by all. An unusual subject for me, but thanks to Desert Bug for getting me out there shooting with him. We worked at it from mid-afternoon and stayed till about 7:30 pm, I bet that the festivities went on much longer, I like this shot since I was working on panning with my camera. Best view is most definitely large.

Slow rear curtain sync with panning.

I was out in the backyard when I saw something moving quickly among the bee balm. At first I thought it was a hummingbird until I got closer and discovered it was a Hummingbird Moth. It was very sunny out with little cover so I apologize for the brightness. Enjoy your Sunday.

Overall winner of 2012 Petit LeMans Rebellion Racing Lola B12/60 Toyota makes quick work of the IMSA Performance Matmut Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in the "stadium" section of Road Atlanta. Great place for crowd to watch the race and we amateur photogs to get up close, unobstructed view points.

Tom's tip: For the folks that want to try panning...you regulars at this know the drill and probably have even better technique. Anyway, manual exposure of area of shot...dark versus light colored cars and headlights will effect shutter priority settings. Observed that faster overtaking cars if on tail of lead car at turn to left would pass about this location. My target point. Focus track and begin panning with slower car and when faster car enters frame...trip shutter... follow trough like your best baseball swing. Repeat until happy! I use shutter speeds from 1/125 to 1/180 to keep those wheels spinning, with sharp detail on car, in this case the blue Porsche as the black #12 was faster than my pan rate and a beautiful background blur for that "speedy" look. Try speeds down towards 1/45 or slower for some interesting results. I'm open to discussion and improved techniques!

There's some pretty fast traffic on Cardiff Bay!

man, like that kfc experience, i could have swore i liked it before. decided on a chipotle grilled stuff steak burrito (though personally i dunno why any thought process had to be made, since they all contain the same six ingredients, give or take 1 item). it was all dough, too much rice and beans, and not enough meat. i am never running for the border again.

I just love this Ghoulia's extra outfit! She's been hanging on my desk ever since I got it ;)
