Bartlett Park District, youth basketball game. Another event captured in my volunteer photography for the park district. I feel that with every event I am learning much about how to use my equipment and especially what not to do! Every now and then I am in the right place at the right time to capture the action. These kids were in a playoff game and were pretty good for their age showing excellent teamwork.
DoF, in these indoor action situations without flash I need to use a fast lens wide open,. So focus point becomes even more critical due to the narrow DoF. Do you focus on the ball or the runners eyes and face? During action it is not always easy to do. The ball has more motion blur than the players so it would be a difficult focus to begin with. I lucked out somewhat getting the runners face in focus in this frame. So even at 1/250 sec the runner's face is in focus and the reset of the scene is bokeh DoF and motion blur combined. The trick seems to be anticipating the players movement and tracking what you expect to be the subject to get the shot.
I was looking for an appropriate image for my 200th... so I'm a bit overdue. Which is not exactly consistent with "fast"...
Shot in The Sour Cherry studios. Even though she is not so much into the race business I begged her to pose for this shot with the helmet. She did pretty good. Com'on - hit the pedal to the metal!

I like this picture because my dogs red coat looks nice against the green grass. My dog is in dog trial competitions so she is a fast runner so I also like that you can see she is running fast by how stretched out she was. If I could change anything, I would try to get rid of the background fence.
