Mein erster Besuch heuer im Altmühltal war leider mit sehr wenig Erfolg gekrönt. Als ich unterwegs zum Standpunkt war, kamen gleich drei Güterzüge hintereinander. Dann war aber für fast anderthalb Stunden Schluss. Erst danach kam 159.214 von EccoRail mit einem Kesselwagen-Ganzzug ums Eck. Im Gegensatz zu meinem zweiten Besuch war jedoch die Natur noch grün😉
In the course of our first visit to the Altmühl-valley, unfortunatelly, we did not mange to capture too much interesting locos. As we were on the way to the spot, not less than three trains came after one other, but then, a pause of one and a half hour followed. The only real highlight that we could capture is Ecco’s 159.214. In contrast to our second visit, however, the nature was still green 😉

Depoe Bay is a city on the Pacific Ocean Oregon Coast. It has a harbor that the city promotes as the world's smallest navigable harbor. The entry to the harbor is a 30 foot wide passage with a concrete wall at the opening and rock wall for the rest. We rented a place with a great view of the boats going in and out, a variety from kayaks on up to 40 ft tour boats for fishing and/or whale watching. We noticed that most power boats came in at high speed and then slowed some as they came to some bends in the passage. The sea was quite calm so the whales' puffs, backs and tails were easily seen from our place.

Eine 218 zieht einen aus UIC Wagen gebildeten InterCity über die Vogelfluglinie. Dies war im Jahre 2018 immer noch genauso üblich wie 1988. Auch der Bahnhof Beschendorf hatte sich in den 30 Jahren kaum verändert. Nur die Zugläufe sind etwas weniger spektakulär geworden. Im Vergleich zum D 236 Kobenhagen-Hoek van Holland ging es beim IC 2415 nur von Fehmarn/Burg nach Hamburg Hbf. Am 13.05.2018 war 218 321 für die Fehmarn-IC`s eingeplant hier rollt sie pünktlich durch den Bahnhof gen Süden

So, yes, the security guards in the distance seemed to be staring...
Minding my own business and starting to photograph the station entrance I was unnerved when suddenly someone was right next to us. It was a security guard, although I thought it was a police officer. I'm not good with security and tend to immediately think that I've done something wrong and clam up. I'm pretty sure I turned bright red when he asked:
"What are you doing?"
I mean- I was taking photographs, wasn't I? Turns out, you're not allowed to take photographs without prior permission in the area. Now, I understand how taking photographs of CCTV and stuff like that would be frowned upon, but just the wide open public spaces?! I just don't see how one can 'privatise' an entire area when one can just walk/drive/take a train in and out without passing any check points.
I had to show the man every shot I had taken that night and even then he seemed very unhappy with us. He eventually gave us a telling off and said we could keep going. I took one more shot but he was still watching just a few metres away so I gave up. I felt very embarrassed and stupid... and that was the end of the night out.
This is one of my favourite shots, where the (frankly, quite large) station entrance is dwarfed by the huge towers that surround it. I'd like to return to Canary Wharf for more photographs in the future, but those security people combined with my anxiety... not such a good mix.

Score! A Common Tern hits the water and comes up with a small fish. The fishing was good at this location, so I had lots of chances - also a good thing, because I missed most of them. Fast? These birds are fast! But they were tolerant, too, of a discreet human presence (sitting, or lying back against some comfy rocks for extended periods). A great day for the terns and for me.
When I was a kid, in my early and mid-teens just before I was old enough to drive, I would ride my bike alone along trails through the woods near my home in Quebec. In my twenties, in BC, I discovered wilderness backpacking, and often hiked alone into remote places. It isn't that I reject human company; far from it. But I appreciate solitude, especially in wild places, and that is what makes Saskatchewan so perfect for me at this late stage in my life: there are few remaining places where one can be alone.
I don't have to worry about whether this person will allow his dog to run the wildlife, or that family will leave a bunch of litter in their wake, or this bozo will decide it's a good idea to skip rocks across the water directly in front of me while I'm trying to photograph water birds. Fewer people means fewer conflicts and/or less necessity to try to educate people about behaviour in natural areas. For example, no bear jams. Admittedly, no bears. But twenty years ago when I started hanging out in prairie places, I was astounded to discover how much wildlife thrives here. It's Canada's best kept secret. Sshhh!
