Prayut’s ‘lawfare’ risks blowing Thailand’s political divide wide open
Thai Public Broadcasting Service - November 20, 2020
Fear is growing that Thailand’s ongoing political conflict will intensify, with no visible way out, after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared that “all existing laws” would be wielded against anti-establishment protesters.
Critics voiced concern that the draconian lese majeste law, which has not been used for some time, may be deployed to shackle the youth-led movement.
Prayut’s statement, which was released on Thursday, said the current situation was not heading in a positive direction, with conflicts now escalating into violence.
If not dealt with, it could damage the country and the “beloved institution”, as well as the peace and safety of people and their property, he added.
“The government and security agencies find it necessary to enforce all existing laws and all articles to take action against protesters who violate the law or who trespass on other people’s rights, in accordance with international standards of justice,” the statement said.
Yuthaporn Issarachai, a political scientist from Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University, said Prayut’s announcement would make it more difficult to find a way out of the conflict, as protesters were bound to react strongly.
Although Prayut did not specifically refer to Article 112 – the lese majeste law which penalises criticism of the monarchy with jail terms of up to 15 years – Yuthaporn believes it may well be used to prosecute protesters.
Prayut had said in June that the King, out of clemency, gave instructions not to use Article 112 against people.
However, royalists on Thursday stepped up their demand that police invoke it against protesters after an offensive remark was spray-painted on the portrait of a Royal outside police headquarters during a protest on Wednesday night.
Following the premier’s statement, police announced they were ready to use the lese majeste law against any demonstrator who offends or insults the monarchy.
However, Metha Matkhao, secretary-general of the Campaign for Popular Democracy, commented that using Article 112 against pro-democracy protesters would contradict the King’s wishes.
“Enforcing it would be a direct violation of the King’s remark and cause damage to the monarchy,” Metha said in a Facebook post, adding that the lese majeste law had long been used as a weapon to destroy political opponents.
He said the government would only add fuel to the fire by issuing such a threat, because it will further polarise Thai society.
“It [the PM’s statement] is not a step towards restoring reconciliation efforts, but a counter-step using legal mechanisms,” the activist said.
Prayut’s statement came after lawmakers on Wednesday passed two draft amendment bills in the first reading that would pave the way for a new Constitution. However, they rejected the so-called “people’s draft” sponsored by rights group Internet Dialogue on Law Reform (iLaw) and supported by more than 100,000 people.
The rejection angered protesters, who supported the draft because it not only paves the way for a new Constitution, but would also reform the monarchy – one of their three core demands. Their other demands are for the removal of Prayut as PM and a more democratic Constitution.
The protesters have announced their next rally will be held on Wednesday (November 25) outside the Crown Property Bureau. Observers suggest Prayut’s statement was issued as a warning against this rally.
Early this month, young anti-establishment protesters took their boldest move so far by symbolically mailing letters to the King, calling for reform of the revered institution.
Free Youth, one of the movement’s allies, suggested Prayut’s statement was a declaration of “lawfare” on the peaceful protesters, in which the government would wield all legal “weapons” including Article 112.
“Is this a declaration of ‘war’ against the people? This is the last straw … Please be prepared to deal with a failed state,” the group posted on Twitter.

After the shock of Donald Trump’s inauguration day, when millions of Americans (and visiting foreigners like me) felt understandably distraught, bereft, dismayed, as the grotesque, narcissistic, predatory, corrupt fraud that is Donald Trump delivered a bleak and graceless inauguration speech, it was nothing short of a delight on Saturday, Jan. 21, Day 2 of the aberrant Trump presidency, when, across the country and around the world, millions of women (plus large numbers of supportive men) marched in protest against Trump and all he and his administration stand for — his disdain for women, his racism, his xenophobia, his adherence to intolerant white Christian fundamentalism, and, last but not least, his opaque, but very obviously corrupt business practices. This particular photo - although out of focus - highlights a particular problem with the new president : his refusal to publish his tax returns. Two US academics have estimated that between 3.3m and 4.6m people marched in total across the US, with New York’s turnout estimated at between 400,000 and 500,000 people.
Stepping out of Grand Central Station into a river of protest, with more clever, witty and insightful handmade posters than you could imagine, and with chants and cheers punctuating the general hubbub at regular intervals was to feel that perhaps this dystopian vision of America can indeed be overthrown before it wreaks untold havoc at home and abroad. And with no beginning or end of the protest in sight, it was easy to believe that the number marching was much larger than even the academics’ estimate.
It will take more than one day, of course, as the people of America need to unite like never before — everyone who didn’t vote for Trump, everyone threatened by Trump, everyone appalled by Trump, including, of course, those who voted for him but might already be having second thoughts. This could be a disastrous presidency, or it could be even worse than that, but people need to put aside any notions of complacency, and work out how to resist. This was a great start, and a historic moment that everyone there will remember, but now there needs to be much more action and organizing.
As you look at these photos, however, I hope they are a reminder of a day of hope across the US and around the world, when ordinary people demonstrated that fundamental decency will not be silenced, and that a tolerant, multi-racial society, featuring, at its heart, equality between women and men, and between people whatever their race, creed or color, has humour, intelligence and compassion that throw into even sharper relief how troublingly miserable, negative and ungenerous Donald Trump and his advisors are.

Best Buy #1465 (30,038 square feet)
7297 Battle Hill Drive, Bell Creek Commons, Mechanicsville, VA
Opened in fall 2007
The other closing RVA Best Buy is their Mechanicsville location. As I saw others point out on Facebook posts about these store closures, it's a little mind baffling that this location in particular is getting the axe and not the Glen Allen location on Brook Road about 8 miles away, which is a little more isolated and lowkey in comparison. With that being said, I feel like a contributing factor to this store's demise may be the neighboring Chick-fil-A's drive-thru line spilling onto Bell Creek Road and blocking easy accessibility to the store, a pretty common scenario nowadays. I might be totally off base and that's unrelated to the closure but at the same time it doesn't seem implausible! Anyways, this store is set to close on March 6th and has already emptied out a little bit in certain departments like TVs and games. It's a typical Best Buy store model as to be expected, but is still worth documenting in case the company ever folds or changes up their aesthetics dramatically.

Let’s improve our world one stitch at a time. Join our ‘gentle protest’ and create embroidered post-it notes (yep, you heard right!) to remind us all to be part of the change we wish to see in the world, where everyone is treated how we would like to be treated.
In this fast-paced world, a physical object like a post-it can be a powerful tool to take us out of our auto-pilot-robotic actions and remind us to stop, think and strive to be our best selves in all that we say and do. I use them often!
It’s easy to forget to think about how our actions affect others when we are focused on meeting deadlines. Often we are so caught up with our own activities and concerns we don’t notice if anyone around us is hurt (that can be the bullied or the bully).
This weekend, slow down and join us in some craftivism (activism using craft). Make time to craft your thoughts into pretty embroidered post-it notes. For the changemaker simple repetitive hand stitching can be a powerful tool to be mindful of our actions and words and how we can live intentionally to help not to harm others. Use our #crafterthought questions when your brain is wandering off to reflect on the message you are creating and how you can be part of this revolution.
“WE’RE PUMPED TO BE PARTNERING WITH CRAFTIVIST COLLECTIVE FOR #MONTHOFACTION’S GET ARTSY CHALLENGE. WE LOVE HOW SARAH EMPHASIZES THE MEDITATIVE PROCESS OF CRAFTING — A USEFUL OUTLET IF YOU’RE COPING WITH BULLYING OR JUST NEED A MENTAL BREAK. SARAH’S WORK SHOWS US THE POWER OF ART AND CRAFT TO COMMUNICATE BIG IDEAS IN SIMPLE WAYS. TRANSFORMING SOMETHING AS EVERYDAY AND DISPOSABLE AS A POST-IT NOTE INTO A HAND-STITCHED, LASTING MESSAGE REMINDS US THAT WITH A LITTLE BIT OF EFFORT AND CREATIVITY, A FEW SIMPLE WORDS CAN MAKE AN INDELIBLE IMPACT.”

Crafterthoughts:
If I was being bullied how would I want people to help me?
How can I show love to a bully to help them stop bullying others?
Using my talents and voice how can I be part of the bystander revolution?
Decide if you are going to keep your embroidered post-its to help you tackle bullying or if you are going to give them as gifts, or quietly leave them for particular people to see, or put them up for many people to see such as in your school, office, park, cafe or anther public place (see our suggestions below). We hope these embroidered post-its not only show that someone is shown commitment in joining the Bystander Revolution by taking part in this slow form of activism but we hope this weekend creative campaign will also surprise and intrigue people, provoke thought, conversation and change.
Don’t forget to share your #crafterthoughts and #craftivism pieces online with us @craftivists (Twitter, Instagram or tag Craftivist Collective page on a Facebook post) as well as share with @BystanderRevo & #MonthofAction

#4593 - 2020 Day 210: Prompted by a Facebook post asking us to list gigs we've attended, I came across a few old tickets. Not my complete set by a long way, but what amazes me is the prices. £5.50 for Paul McCartney and £4.00 for Whitesnake at Hammersmith Odeon. Wouldn't even buy a pizza now.

We made a Polish Cabbage soup today! And we’ve been excited about eating it the past couple days.
Ingredients: Cabbage, Kielbasa, Bacon, Onions, Celery, Carrots, Turnips, Chicken stock, Water, Chicken bouillon, Apple cider vinegar, Bay leaves and Dill.
Directions: Sauté the Kielbasa and Bacon. Then sauté the Onions, Celery and Carrots. Once they’re softened, add the Chicken stock, cubed up Turnips, and chopped Cabbage. Add more water and chicken bouillon as needed ( to cover the soup) Add a teaspoon of Dill and two Bay leaves. Simmer on the stove ‘till the Carrots and Cabbage are cooked through.
Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the soup. Simmer another 15 mins.
Pour soup into bowls and let cool before eating. Enjoy!

Eric coomers infamous deleted facebook post. Hes very important in dominion vote counting machines that are at the heart of fraud allegations into the USA election. The allegations are that they ran an algorithm that flipped votes from Trump to Biden amongst other things. If you read the message its clear he had plenty of incentive to do so. In legal terms it's called a conflict of interest. I'm not saying what happened or not but merely providing information.

Pewaukee at last!
This selfie was for a Facebook post promoting a Fiero parts sale he's holding over Memorial Day week (extended from Memorial Day weekend).
The caption was, "Attention Fiero owners. If you do not attend Steve Walchli's parts sale, you deserve to have your Fiero taken from you and crushed." (You have to imagine that said in a very evil, Charles Laughton-style British accent.)
We were going for menacing facial expressions -- Steve nailed it. Me? Not so much :)
Steve had mentioned in his post advertising the sale that, time permitting, he would do an inspection on each Fiero that came in. And he found issues on mine that I didn't know about and will definitely have to take care of. Very, very thorough.
A view of the elevator the day before it was burned in fire department training exercise on November 9, 2019.
A crane had been brought in to remove the top of the elevator, and workers were salvaging metal and other items prior to the fire. One commented on a Facebook post that he had to watch his step very carefully inside the elevator as the floor was heavily rotted .
Built circa 1897 for the McCord Bros. Elevator Co. It was owned by the Greig & Zeeman Co. in the 1900's-1910's and by B.B. Anderson & Sons by 1920. It was burned down as a training exercise for local fire departments on November 19, 2019.
One of our favorite 2016 stories: Over 50 years ago, Bernard Cohen traveled to Georgetown University to consult Professor Chester Antieau on his’s new case, Loving vs. Virginia. Prof. Antieau recommended working with Philip Hirschkop (L’64) and together they fought and won the Loving v. Virginia Supreme Court case, legalizing interracial marriage in 16 states. ♥ Today, this story is widely known as Loving, a major motion picture showing the Lovings’ hardships & their case with Bernard, played by Nick Kroll (C’01). May 29, 2023 - "The skyline of downtown Columbus has been transformed with this monumental artwork by internationally recognized sculptor Janet Echelman. "Current" is a stunning, ephemeral, sky-high sculpture that will inspire wonder and imagination in all who see it. As it dances gracefully in the wind, this awe-inspiring work of art will become an emblem of Columbus’ culture and innovation.
The design and installation of "Current" was funded by Jeff Edwards. He has graciously donated the work to the Museum. We will oversee the care and maintenance of the sculpture as part of our permanent collection." Previous description of "Current" from a Facebook post by the Columbus Museum of Art.
