I found out on Facebook that my friend, who I originally became friends with on Flickr, has passed away. I never met him, but he was very kind and encouraging to me during my own health problems. He was no longer active on Flickr, but we still occasionally commented on each other’s Facebook posts. R.I.P. Marcel!

I was playing in the yard yesterday and I took the camera with me to the pond area. I watched and listened as the normal visitors were coming and going as they pleased. It's always a delight to see the activity and listen to the chatter of the birds.
As I fed the Koi, I noticed that Myrtle the turtle was coming out to eat as well. I have been seeing her on a fairly regular basis now. I believe she likes the free food and may just decide to make this her permeant residence.
Oh dear, I noticed that the flat feeder near the pond was low on millet. So leaving the camera behind, off I went towards the house in order to remedy the situation. Of course as I approached the lanai door, what did I see? The most beautiful Palamedes Swallowtail was sipping nectar on the pentas by the door.
Now, I wouldn't say I was chasing butterflies or anything like that but I am guilty of doing an about face in order to retrieve the camera and try to get a shot before the Palamedes departed. As you can see, I was in time to get a couple of shots before she departed. The Palamedes is one that I would chase if need be in order to get a shot. They don't visit as often as most. The only swallowtail visitors to my yard that is more allusive is the Zebra Swallowtail.
Once the Palamedes departed, I continued about my business, retrieved the millet and went to fill the feeder. Just as I completed that simple task, the rain began to pour. We have been getting a lot of popup showers lately. Oops, the camera was by the lanai door sitting exposed. Yep, it was time to run, not walk to save the camera and get inside. My yard is small but there is no direct path to anywhere. It's more interesting that way, unless you are in a hurry.
A cousin of mine once asked my dad how big my yard was because she was always seeing my Facebook posts of the backyard visitors. He responded to her, it's not big at all but it will take you a half a day to get around the whole thing. That was back before the human habitat enhancements were completed. Now we humans have a nice paver sidewalk so visitors can move a bit more quickly if desired. I find it a bit funny that the mourning doves enjoy walking on the sidewalk more than the grass.
Anyway, it seems that I'm getting a bit long-winded here so I shall stop and say, have a wonderful day and happy snapping.
A shot taken on Friday 16 Junes. The location was thanks to a Facebook post. For locals it is just outside the village of Lavant Nr Chichester. It is off New Road leading to the Airfield where Fordwater Lane turns into a path and a little way down a footpath turns off and runs alongside the field and the poppies.
The shot was taken with a Sony A550 with a tamron 18-200 at 55mm. 1 image processed with Camera Raw. This was followed by Topaz Clarity and increasing brightness a little, The colours are natural.

After the sunset photography at my secluded field I headed to a location I scouted in the afternoon to shoot this blue hour/night scene with the moon.
Once again my mobile phone was very useful during the scouting time in the afternoon:
It was great to pre- visualize the composition and gave me via the app Photopills accurate information about where the moon will be positioned at a given time.

This is the last image I took on the first day in Valensole before heading back to my accommodation in Gréoux-les-Bains. After the exhausting journey to France and being for hours in the lavender fields with temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius, I quickly fell asleep and dreamt about what the purple fields in Valensole will have to offer the next day …

Thanks to a EA Facebook post and more information later on a call time at STL, Grady and I took a few hours to follow the Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit leading a stack train down from Global 4 destined for Santa Teresa, NM (IG4SIB 24). Last shot of the day was probably the first shot I planned - passing the former Missouri Pacific stone depot in Kirkwood, Missouri. The city has got the depot in good shape and it is still in use by Amtrak. Seemed like a fitting spot to put heritage together.

As I mentioned in the caption for my previous post of Vermont Railway's B&R Job with two, red, VTR GP40-2s, one of the reasons I inadvertently missed a full chase of that train out of Rutland was because I had my sights set on catching Pan Am Southern's AD-1 local on the Adams Industrial Track between North Adams and Adams, Massachusetts. Why bother with a branch line chase that only offers a couple shots? Well, because Pan Am's fleet of former Guilford four-axle EMDs is fading fast, especially west of Portland, Maine, and recent Facebook posts from near East Deerfield, Massachusetts seemed to indicate that MEC GP40-2W #514 was holding down the AD-1 job for now. Furthermore, those posts also revealed that the engine was positioned to face south for the run down the Adams Branch. So, although I certainly would have chased the B&R Job out of Rutland had I known the lashup ahead of time, yesterday was "mission accomplished" with AD-1. In this view, the train rolls past Southview Cemetery in North Adams, shortly after departing the small yard at the north end of the branch.
it's really amazing how good the new generation of autofocus in all the new mirrorless cameras are, I have been getting so many shots this year that I was never able to achieve with previous DSLRs.

A mainstay watering hole of Chicago's South Loop is set to shutter following their New Year's bash.
Cal's Liquors, 400 S. Wells St., has long been a favorite of bike messengers and punk rockers among its ever eclectic crowd, but the bar announced on Dec. 16 via a Facebook post that "your favorite shitty dive bar is closing it's doors at the end of the month."
"For reasons I can explain, and for some I will never know, our last night will be a New Years Eve show," the post read.

After someone on Facebook posted a shot of these I thought it might be worth a visit.
I was really really really hoping for an amazingly colourfull sunset. But unfortunately all I got was this fairly grey sky.
I hope (fingers crossed) for some better light in the week. If I can find the time to re shoot this I will.
On October 16, 2024 there was no LA&L road train, so I was not able to catch any black and yellow Alco's. At around 12:45pm I saw a Facebook post that NS train 264 was by Warsaw. I figured if I hustled, I should be able to beat the train down to Browns Crossing, NY along the Canisteo River. I arrived at the location and within 5 minutes the train arrived, perfectly timed with a sucker hole. I got a black and yellow GE instead of Alco's, but it was still an excellent score.

When I first read the post Monday morning that the IC painted Death Star SD70's might be replaced by CN SD70M-2's I was already sitting on the former Bessemer main waiting for the northbound at Keepville reading Facebook posts. I had decided months ago that getting reaquainted with the Bessemer was a worthwhile local target for the COVID era, in spite of the Death Stars. And I hadn't got to it yet. But there are worse things than matched black standard cabs running on a cool piece of efficient, scenic railroad. So i was unusually a little ahead of the curve. With that news and a great weather forecast, Wednesday 9/23/2020 was another day spent on the Bessemer. This is the last shot of the day of the northbound at Russelton. They took extra time doing the turn to get empties and another few minutes I would have left. By the time the train cleared, there was no hint of a shadow anywhere in the shot.

It had been almost exactly 2 years since I had last traveled to Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located in the northwestern corner of Missouri, not far from the Nebraska border, and a good 5+ hours drive from my home in St. Louis County. With the long Christmas weekend, I had planned on trying to make the drive up there early Saturday morning. However, late Friday came confirmation that the wise and truly representative members of our federal government had decided to shut everything down for the good of the people they represent. Loess Bluffs, being run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, would clearly be impacted.
I searched for quite some time on the interwebs (the source of all knowledge) and could find no confirmation on whether Loess Bluffs would be closed due to the government shut down. Most National Wildlife Refuges have Facebook sites, but nothing about the impact of the government shutdown was posted. It was too late in the evening to call the refuge office. In an act of desperation, I posted my question on their Facebook page, not expecting an answer. I was just about resigned to cancelling my trip when, at 8:43 p.m., I received an official response from the Refuge - - while the office would be closed due to the shutdown, the auto tour and trails would all remain open to the public. My trip was back on, thanks to the wonderful hard-working people at Loess Bluffs. Hopefully, this shut down will not last long and they will all be able to return to their jobs soon. I am truly grateful to the person who responded to my Facebook post after hours on a Friday evening.
I went straight to bed and woke to my alarm at 1:45 a.m. I was on the road by 2:15 a.m., and I pulled into the gate at Loess Bluffs about 5 hours later. I was not alone. Several other visitors were there who had obviously come to see what I had come to see - - thousands upon thousands of snow geese covering the wetland area and filling the sky (not to mention a lot of eagles, hawks and Trumpeter Swans).
The last time I was at Loess Bluffs, I had spent the night. This time, my plan was to spend the morning, and then turn around and be back home in time for dinner. 10+ hours of driving, plus several hours more driving around the refuge. It was a long drive back home that day. By the time I got home, I had just enough energy to eat dinner and jump back into bed.

Just for the record, the boring normal vision view of a neat spot that we (JP and KO) found just north of Pleasant Lake, IN on Sunday 12/16/2018. They've already very well covered the creative views, but it's hard to go wrong with a clean nicely painted 45 car body. The train left Reading MI in an early morning fog that cleared by the time it got out out of Michigan and stayed clear until 10 minutes after the last shot in Ohio. Thanks to TC for paying attention to facebook posts and communicating to a good sized contingent that documented this move. Great time hanging with the youngsters for a day.

It's Memorial Day Monday, aka Mountain Monday, and I'm thinking of mountains today - especially Mount Rainier. I'm glad I stayed home, this weekend, however. Not only because there's still many feet of what is probably now dirty snow up at the Paradise area, but also because - based upon the park Facebook posts I read - the crowds were ginormous!
Instead, I chose to just dream about The Mountain as I worked on this image captured several years ago during an early September day.
As you can see, there was a continuous cloud bank curtaining the Paradise area, where I stayed. So, no view of Mount Rainier from up there. I had to drive down elevation to see even a glimpse of the mountain as the wind caused the clouds to play hide-and-seek with the mountain top. This image was captured early in the morning at a place called Reflection Lakes (an area with a series of small lakes that beautifully capture the reflection of the mountain .... on a less windy day).

I've seen a few Facebook posts from people criticising creatives for putting up sexy photos or work out videos with all that is going on at the moment in Australia.
Firstly, I understand the emotion involved. I don't know anyone that's not feeling absolutely sick about it. The helplessness, the frustration, the gut wrenching sadness - you are not alone. We feel it too. We may not be fighting fires but many of us are donating money to help those affected.
Terrence Credlin has organised a photoshoot on Australia Day where participation involves a mandatory donation to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal (Melbourne based creatives who haven't yet been invited - please let me know and I'll add you).
I believe people overall are doing what they can. Please don't turn on us or anyone else who hasn't done anything to deserve it. We aren't the problem or the cause and we care too.

Thanks to a Facebook post by JV, we learned that southbound grain train G884 was coming with IC painted SD70 #1003 leading. There aren't many units left in IC paint and luckily G884 was following shortly behind Amtrak.
This grain train was diverging at Edgewood Jct to use the superior engineered "Edgewood Cutoff" to roll through the terrain of southern Illinois. The Cutoff bypasses congestion at Centralia, Carbondale and Cario, IL and is the perfect route for heavy unit trains.
