I was playing in the yard yesterday and I took the camera with me to the pond area. I watched and listened as the normal visitors were coming and going as they pleased. It's always a delight to see the activity and listen to the chatter of the birds.
As I fed the Koi, I noticed that Myrtle the turtle was coming out to eat as well. I have been seeing her on a fairly regular basis now. I believe she likes the free food and may just decide to make this her permeant residence.
Oh dear, I noticed that the flat feeder near the pond was low on millet. So leaving the camera behind, off I went towards the house in order to remedy the situation. Of course as I approached the lanai door, what did I see? The most beautiful Palamedes Swallowtail was sipping nectar on the pentas by the door.
Now, I wouldn't say I was chasing butterflies or anything like that but I am guilty of doing an about face in order to retrieve the camera and try to get a shot before the Palamedes departed. As you can see, I was in time to get a couple of shots before she departed. The Palamedes is one that I would chase if need be in order to get a shot. They don't visit as often as most. The only swallowtail visitors to my yard that is more allusive is the Zebra Swallowtail.
Once the Palamedes departed, I continued about my business, retrieved the millet and went to fill the feeder. Just as I completed that simple task, the rain began to pour. We have been getting a lot of popup showers lately. Oops, the camera was by the lanai door sitting exposed. Yep, it was time to run, not walk to save the camera and get inside. My yard is small but there is no direct path to anywhere. It's more interesting that way, unless you are in a hurry.
A cousin of mine once asked my dad how big my yard was because she was always seeing my Facebook posts of the backyard visitors. He responded to her, it's not big at all but it will take you a half a day to get around the whole thing. That was back before the human habitat enhancements were completed. Now we humans have a nice paver sidewalk so visitors can move a bit more quickly if desired. I find it a bit funny that the mourning doves enjoy walking on the sidewalk more than the grass.
Anyway, it seems that I'm getting a bit long-winded here so I shall stop and say, have a wonderful day and happy snapping.

A shot taken on Friday 16 Junes. The location was thanks to a Facebook post. For locals it is just outside the village of Lavant Nr Chichester. It is off New Road leading to the Airfield where Fordwater Lane turns into a path and a little way down a footpath turns off and runs alongside the field and the poppies.
The shot was taken with a Sony A550 with a tamron 18-200 at 55mm. 1 image processed with Camera Raw. This was followed by Topaz Clarity and increasing brightness a little, The colours are natural.

While I was out in Arizona on a non-train related vacation, I saw a Facebook post about the Grand Canyon Railway releasing an F40PH painted to celebrate the 250th year of the United States of America. As luck would have it, the innaugural run of it would line up perfectly with our drive home. Here it is departing Williams, AZ, heading to the Grand Canyon.

Location:
A 253 has made about 100+ miles in a matter of 12 hours, all the while being re profiled as a 2-261 type train for Minny/St. Paul. You really never know what you are gonna get along this portion of the CPKC system. There is somewhat of a regular rhythm, but never much to hold true to. I only began my interest along the Milwaukee Road to Kansas City during Iowa Chicago and Eastern days. The subject matter remains just a smidge interesting to me.
The evening before a simple facebook post from Joplin, MO laid a loose plan to go out and find this goober the next morning. It finally appeared on the Ottumwa camera in the 4AM hour. Drive out to Muscatine pewdawn and figure out he’s holding west of Letts. I didnt think any of this would be in the plan. He finally makes it to Nahant only to change from a Bensenville-bound 253, to a 2-261. He wont be making the trek across my home turf of the Chicago Sub and it is about 330pm when he finally leaves Nahant anyway. The whole plan for the day fell apart in slow motion, but I stuck out the whole afternoon to finally catch him sliding thru one of the more interesting spots on the subdivision. Wishing I paid attention to this area in ICE days - there’s a lot of options.

I did not take these photos. They were on a Facebook post I saw today along with the following narrative. I was so moved by it that I decided to share it here, too.
"I saw these images on @timkennedymma feed. Please, look at each one. Pause, give them your consideration. America’s exceptional armed forces have altered the course of the world for the better. From the Union Army defeating slave owning confederates, to the Greatest Generation and her Allies vanquishing the Nazis or our special operators hunting down the perpetrators of 9/11. We count the names of each fallen solider lest they be countless. They are the good guys. They run to the sound of gunfire. They know pain and suffering we never will. They have given us the most free and decent society planet earth has ever seen. We run the risk of losing that decency when we fail to instill gratitude in the minds of our youth or the perspective of what it actually means to be free- should they never learn of the selfless sacrifice of our armed service members in the face of oppressive evil. So join me in showing support for our fallen. Take a quiet moment to really consider the sacrifice. And if you use the comments section on posts like this to bitch and moan about America please understand there are countries in the world where criticizing your government will get you killed or imprisoned. On October 16, 2024 there was no LA&L road train, so I was not able to catch any black and yellow Alco's. At around 12:45pm I saw a Facebook post that NS train 264 was by Warsaw. I figured if I hustled, I should be able to beat the train down to Browns Crossing, NY along the Canisteo River. I arrived at the location and within 5 minutes the train arrived, perfectly timed with a sucker hole. I got a black and yellow GE instead of Alco's, but it was still an excellent score.

Just for the record, the boring normal vision view of a neat spot that we (JP and KO) found just north of Pleasant Lake, IN on Sunday 12/16/2018. They've already very well covered the creative views, but it's hard to go wrong with a clean nicely painted 45 car body. The train left Reading MI in an early morning fog that cleared by the time it got out out of Michigan and stayed clear until 10 minutes after the last shot in Ohio. Friday a week ago, the sun was shining and the sky was blue, and a perfect opportunity to go for a well earned walk through my local forest park.
This was the path I wanted to find as there's a Japanese Acer along it, and I thought the red leaves would be ready to photograph. They weren't just red enough, but the sun that came through the branches at this point was something phenomenal...
I actually brought my tripod with me for a change and set it up, and with a slightly longer exposure and using my ND variable filter, I captured those amazing sun rays :)
Of course, the first verse of scripture that came to my mind was Psalm 119 v 105 which talks about God's word being a light unto our path. Even in a world where there's so much going on around us, we need to focus on the path we're on, and let God do the leading :)

As I was driving around the Big Island looking for a good spot to shoot the sunset, I spotted a great beach with a lava field and decided to check it out. Originally, I hadn't intended to do any long exposures, so I left the tripod and ND filters in the car. As I walked around, I found a complex system of pools and drains that would look beautiful with LE, so I waited until after the sun went down, got down low and tucked into a solid 3-point shooting stance to get some 1/2 sec exposures hand held. This is an upload from my Facebook post, so it probably won't show EXIF data, but here you go: Nikon Zf Nikkor 24-200mm f/4-6.3 @24MM ISO 100 1/2 sec F/8.

I have not posted in a while! I have went into more detail about it on my Facebook post here (www.facebook.com/KerryandherCamera/posts/946275162533759) if you want to have a read as it explains why and why I had to take a step back from photography for a while, or at least from being public about it like posting on social media and platforms like this. It is important we look after ourselves. Self-care isn’t just the nice things like bubble baths and face masks but also recognising and addressing any self-destructive behaviours or thought processes. I hope you all have been well during the lockdown and restrictions due to Miss Rona ♥
Over the next few days, I will be sharing the photos I entered into the BBC Countryfile Calendar competition. None won but seeing the pictures that did I realise they edge more to landscape than the nature photos that won. Nonetheless I am really proud of them as they show off the place that I call home! Starting off today with this beautiful sunset from Fernbrae Meadows, a beautiful local greenspace!

I've seen a few Facebook posts from people criticising creatives for putting up sexy photos or work out videos with all that is going on at the moment in Australia.
Firstly, I understand the emotion involved. I don't know anyone that's not feeling absolutely sick about it. The helplessness, the frustration, the gut wrenching sadness - you are not alone. We feel it too. We may not be fighting fires but many of us are donating money to help those affected.
Terrence Credlin has organised a photoshoot on Australia Day where participation involves a mandatory donation to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal (Melbourne based creatives who haven't yet been invited - please let me know and I'll add you).
I believe people overall are doing what they can. Please don't turn on us or anyone else who hasn't done anything to deserve it. We aren't the problem or the cause and we care too.
