On October 16, 2024 there was no LA&L road train, so I was not able to catch any black and yellow Alco's. At around 12:45pm I saw a Facebook post that NS train 264 was by Warsaw. I figured if I hustled, I should be able to beat the train down to Browns Crossing, NY along the Canisteo River. I arrived at the location and within 5 minutes the train arrived, perfectly timed with a sucker hole. I got a black and yellow GE instead of Alco's, but it was still an excellent score.

It is International Jumping Spider Day! Looks like this is the first year. Shaham Tamir, a macro photographer on Facebook started it to show the cutest and most adorable spiders as a way for people to embrace instead of fear spiders. Similar to how Arachtober got started 10 years ago so we are certainly supporting it.

The Facebook post says:

"The purpose of this initiative is to get other people who like jumping spiders to share their appreciation through the Internet, in order to introduce these fantastic creatures to more people, and globally expand the amount of fans."

American Bald Eagle at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge - No 1 by Mark

It had been almost exactly 2 years since I had last traveled to Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located in the northwestern corner of Missouri, not far from the Nebraska border, and a good 5+ hours drive from my home in St. Louis County. With the long Christmas weekend, I had planned on trying to make the drive up there early Saturday morning. However, late Friday came confirmation that the wise and truly representative members of our federal government had decided to shut everything down for the good of the people they represent. Loess Bluffs, being run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, would clearly be impacted.

I searched for quite some time on the interwebs (the source of all knowledge) and could find no confirmation on whether Loess Bluffs would be closed due to the government shut down. Most National Wildlife Refuges have Facebook sites, but nothing about the impact of the government shutdown was posted. It was too late in the evening to call the refuge office. In an act of desperation, I posted my question on their Facebook page, not expecting an answer. I was just about resigned to cancelling my trip when, at 8:43 p.m., I received an official response from the Refuge - - while the office would be closed due to the shutdown, the auto tour and trails would all remain open to the public. My trip was back on, thanks to the wonderful hard-working people at Loess Bluffs. Hopefully, this shut down will not last long and they will all be able to return to their jobs soon. I am truly grateful to the person who responded to my Facebook post after hours on a Friday evening.

I went straight to bed and woke to my alarm at 1:45 a.m. I was on the road by 2:15 a.m., and I pulled into the gate at Loess Bluffs about 5 hours later. I was not alone. Several other visitors were there who had obviously come to see what I had come to see - - thousands upon thousands of snow geese covering the wetland area and filling the sky (not to mention a lot of eagles, hawks and Trumpeter Swans).

The last time I was at Loess Bluffs, I had spent the night. This time, my plan was to spend the morning, and then turn around and be back home in time for dinner. 10+ hours of driving, plus several hours more driving around the refuge. It was a long drive back home that day. By the time I got home, I had just enough energy to eat dinner and jump back into bed.

New hairstyle out tomorrow at Uber! I've been asked a lot to make french braids and I decided it was the perfect timing to end with this Douxella month! They come in three different head sizes and four chest ones. With the Deluxe HUD you will be allowed to switch between 4 different styles, turn on/off the rings on the braids and also put on the optional bands. That HUD also includes a Peace animation courtesy of Ryan and it is super cute.

Lastly, I collabed with Lelutka and we will be doing a give away of 4 Lelutka mesh heads (to choose on the available ones). This scan started from a Facebook post from David Magill. He had posted a shot of a circus train he had run at Brookfield Ma. Looking at the engine number it just seemed so familiar...….so I dived into the slide files to look for it and...Presto! There it was. I had recrewed his train in Springfield Station. Fast forward 19 years or so we would meet again via the fabulous Facebook group that he runs and a invite to see his Maybrook Line model railroad. I can remember engine numbers from 20 years ago, but I can't remember what I had for lunch last week! Anyway, here were are waiting at Field Interlocking on the Springfield Line most likely for #490, with CSXT GP40-2's 6234 and 6216 with the RB&BB train.

Quarter-plate tintype by an anonymous photographer. A lensman captured this Union officer giving the time-honored gesture of derision or disdain. His technique matches an instruction printed in an 1863 issue of the Semi-Weekly Wisconsin of Milwaukee: “Put thumb to nose, and gyrate the extended fingers for a moment.”

Though Oxford Dictionary dates the origin of the phrase to 1854, Newspapers.com reveals examples in England as early as 1840, and the United States in 1841.

One Civil War example involves Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard after the First Battle of Manassas in 1861. As the story goes, a member of the 11th New York Infantry—the rowdy Fire Zouaves—was hauled before the victorious general and “manifested his contempt for that chieftain by putting his thumb to his nose and gyrating with his finger.” The Zouave then kicked and knocked about a few nearby soldiers, challenged Beauregard to a fight, and then took off running. He was soon apprehended and tossed into solitary confinement.

The yarn finishes, “The rebels seem to admire the cool audacity of the chap, and Beauregard laughed heartily at his pranks.”

In a Facebook post on March 19, 2019, John Laking noted, "In England this is called 'cocking a snook ' if he used his left to extend the gesture that would be ' long bacon .'"

Light On The Path by Glenda Hall

Friday a week ago, the sun was shining and the sky was blue, and a perfect opportunity to go for a well earned walk through my local forest park.

This was the path I wanted to find as there's a Japanese Acer along it, and I thought the red leaves would be ready to photograph. They weren't just red enough, but the sun that came through the branches at this point was something phenomenal...

I actually brought my tripod with me for a change and set it up, and with a slightly longer exposure and using my ND variable filter, I captured those amazing sun rays :)

Of course, the first verse of scripture that came to my mind was Psalm 119 v 105 which talks about God's word being a light unto our path. Even in a world where there's so much going on around us, we need to focus on the path we're on, and let God do the leading :)

[Facebook post] I was really taken by this scene as I passed the German Historical Museum on Unten den Linden early this morning and turned the corner to begin a walk along the Spree River. There was a surreal quality to the arrangement of the domes of the Berlin Cathedral in the distance which appear to float above the trees of the Lustgarten in the middleground. Meanwhile, the towering Berliner Fernsehturm (TV Tower), a relic of the long-gone East German state, seems to insert itself into the picture, apropos nothing, just to break the symmetry of the shot.
