I found out on Facebook that my friend, who I originally became friends with on Flickr, has passed away. I never met him, but he was very kind and encouraging to me during my own health problems. A shot taken on Friday 16 Junes. The location was thanks to a Facebook post. For locals it is just outside the village of Lavant Nr Chichester. It is off New Road leading to the Airfield where Fordwater Lane turns into a path and a little way down a footpath turns off and runs alongside the field and the poppies.
The shot was taken with a Sony A550 with a tamron 18-200 at 55mm. 1 image processed with Camera Raw. This was followed by Topaz Clarity and increasing brightness a little, The colours are natural.

After the sunset photography at my secluded field I headed to a location I scouted in the afternoon to shoot this blue hour/night scene with the moon.
Once again my mobile phone was very useful during the scouting time in the afternoon:

After the exhausting journey to France and being for hours in the lavender fields with temperatures around 35 degrees Celsius, I quickly fell asleep and dreamt about what the purple fields in Valensole will have to offer the next day …

Meet one of Banff's famous grizzlies, Bear 142, a six-year old female at the time of this photo. Now 15, she is well known to park staff and locals. She typically hangs out in the corridor between Lake Louise and Banff town, and is tolerant of people - so far - presumably because the proximity keeps her cubs a little safer from predation by male grizzlies. Still, she lost two of her most recent litter of three, probably to a grizzly boar. Male grizzlies often kill and eat grizzly cubs. It's a brutal world.
If you Google "Banff Bear 142" you'll find lots of info about her, including a Facebook post with video from this year: she has 2 tiny cubs, and they are CUTE! She's also a lot bigger than in my photo...
Encroachment by photographers and selfie-takers is a big problem in Banff, and Parks Canada is looking at strategies to minimize dangerous encounters. I'm well aware of this and have never gone there with specific intent to photograph bears. The two grizzly shots closing out my Alberta series were random encounters; I am not one of the obnoxious Banff paparazzi.
In this case, 142 was on the other side of a fence, oblivious to me. Cars were zipping past, equally oblivious, as 142 foraged on a hillside at the edge of the forest. I used ON1 Resize to upscale the image, and also digitally removed her ear tag.
Tomorrow - back to the wild prairie of Saskatchewan!

Thanks to a EA Facebook post and more information later on a call time at STL, Grady and I took a few hours to follow the Missouri Pacific Heritage Unit leading a stack train down from Global 4 destined for Santa Teresa, NM (IG4SIB 24). Last shot of the day was probably the first shot I planned - passing the former Missouri Pacific stone depot in Kirkwood, Missouri. The city has got the depot in good shape and it is still in use by Amtrak. Seemed like a fitting spot to put heritage together.

I think I saw this idea for using the i-pad for light painting on a Facebook post by Cooph. This place has the coolest ideas if you have never heard of it check it out.
As I mentioned in the caption for my previous post of Vermont Railway's B&R Job with two, red, VTR GP40-2s, one of the reasons I inadvertently missed a full chase of that train out of Rutland was because I had my sights set on catching Pan Am Southern's AD-1 local on the Adams Industrial Track between North Adams and Adams, Massachusetts. Why bother with a branch line chase that only offers a couple shots? Well, because Pan Am's fleet of former Guilford four-axle EMDs is fading fast, especially west of Portland, Maine, and recent Facebook posts from near East Deerfield, Massachusetts seemed to indicate that MEC GP40-2W #514 was holding down the AD-1 job for now. Furthermore, those posts also revealed that the engine was positioned to face south for the run down the Adams Branch. So, although I certainly would have chased the B&R Job out of Rutland had I known the lashup ahead of time, yesterday was "mission accomplished" with AD-1. In this view, the train rolls past Southview Cemetery in North Adams, shortly after departing the small yard at the north end of the branch.
Grubb Run flows east-west along a deeply cut and forested valley before joining the Susquehanna. The south-facing side of this valley features an annual explosion of spring wildflowers. Such a delight to see. Thanks for stopping.

Creepy noises in the dark, the occasional braying and scuttling of sheep, the sound of wind whistling across the fields and stars, stars as far I could see. For an hour, I had these haystacks alone to myself, my imagination and it was a question of how to record these senses into one image. This is the result of 14 vertical stitched images to encompass the very high milky way at the time of shooting. I hope you feel the sentiment! (ps. this is a redo from the facebook posted image which was done as a very small version on the fly)

On October 16, 2024 there was no LA&L road train, so I was not able to catch any black and yellow Alco's. At around 12:45pm I saw a Facebook post that NS train 264 was by Warsaw. I figured if I hustled, I should be able to beat the train down to Browns Crossing, NY along the Canisteo River. I arrived at the location and within 5 minutes the train arrived, perfectly timed with a sucker hole. I got a black and yellow GE instead of Alco's, but it was still an excellent score.

After someone on Facebook posted a shot of these I thought it might be worth a visit.
I was really really really hoping for an amazingly colourfull sunset. But unfortunately all I got was this fairly grey sky.
I hope (fingers crossed) for some better light in the week. If I can find the time to re shoot this I will.
UP 4217 Leads G4LB intermodal westbound across th- oh wait. UP 4217 was originally the mid train DPU on IG4LB, but while the intermodal made its way through Pacific, right at the final crossing (Payne St) the sound of breaks being applied grabbed everyones attention and then shortly after the smell of break shoes lingered Pacific. What also lingered were Facebook post on this train blocking town… so after many many decisions on how to go about unblocking Pacific, a plan was made to split the train from the DP’s and limp the front half to Labadie to inspect the leader. The engineer took the train to Labadie while the conductor stayed behind with the back half, only blocking one crossing in town now (Olive St). Loaded coal CNATS flys east past the soon to become 2IGLB 9 heading towards Calvert City, KY to be unloaded, graciously the conductor flicked the brights on for a few seconds while the DPU flew past on the other main. Later that night a spare engine would be brought out to be placed infront of the SD70M and at 3:40 AM the back half of the original G4LB would creeping out of pacific to heading begin westbound across the Jefferson City Subdivision.

I live in an agricultural area that is the home of extreme conservative views. Trump is their man. If you look at the Facebook posts of many of the folks around here, you will find posts such as this one. It will be followed by a stream of "Right Ons" and all manner of stupid comments about their rights being infringed upon.
This, despite the best medical and scientific minds advising the wearing of masks. Despite the evidence presented by other countries that either never did come anywhere near the death toll we have (Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, etc), or who had a serious problem, but through communal effort beat the virus down (Spain, Italy, Great Britain).
I know one should not make too much of it, but I cannot conceive of the future success of a nation if its citizens are this misguided and ignorant. I think this is a situation that has been building for some time, but has simply been exacerbated and accelerated by Covid-19.
I suppose one could argue that this is American Exceptionalism at work.

It had been almost exactly 2 years since I had last traveled to Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located in the northwestern corner of Missouri, not far from the Nebraska border, and a good 5+ hours drive from my home in St. Louis County. With the long Christmas weekend, I had planned on trying to make the drive up there early Saturday morning. However, late Friday came confirmation that the wise and truly representative members of our federal government had decided to shut everything down for the good of the people they represent. Loess Bluffs, being run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, would clearly be impacted.
I searched for quite some time on the interwebs (the source of all knowledge) and could find no confirmation on whether Loess Bluffs would be closed due to the government shut down. Most National Wildlife Refuges have Facebook sites, but nothing about the impact of the government shutdown was posted. It was too late in the evening to call the refuge office. In an act of desperation, I posted my question on their Facebook page, not expecting an answer. I was just about resigned to cancelling my trip when, at 8:43 p.m., I received an official response from the Refuge - - while the office would be closed due to the shutdown, the auto tour and trails would all remain open to the public. My trip was back on, thanks to the wonderful hard-working people at Loess Bluffs. Hopefully, this shut down will not last long and they will all be able to return to their jobs soon. I am truly grateful to the person who responded to my Facebook post after hours on a Friday evening.
I went straight to bed and woke to my alarm at 1:45 a.m. I was on the road by 2:15 a.m., and I pulled into the gate at Loess Bluffs about 5 hours later. I was not alone. Several other visitors were there who had obviously come to see what I had come to see - - thousands upon thousands of snow geese covering the wetland area and filling the sky (not to mention a lot of eagles, hawks and Trumpeter Swans).
The last time I was at Loess Bluffs, I had spent the night. This time, my plan was to spend the morning, and then turn around and be back home in time for dinner. 10+ hours of driving, plus several hours more driving around the refuge. It was a long drive back home that day. By the time I got home, I had just enough energy to eat dinner and jump back into bed.

Un prix qui ne fait pas l’unanimité à Bruxelles. Le 17 mars dernier, au Mipim, le salon international de l’immobilier de Cannes, les architectes du nouveau siège de BNP Paribas Fortis, entre les rues Montagne du Parc, Ravenstein et Baron Horta, recevaient le prix du meilleur centre d’affaires.
Prestigieuse récompense pour les bureaux Baumschlager Eberle Architekten, Styfhals et Jaspers-Eyers Architects qui ont imaginé un immeuble de 103.000 mètres carrés (12 niveaux dont cinq en sous-sol) lumineux et durable avec sa toiture verte, son système de stockage d’énergie et ses panneaux photovoltaïques. Un bâtiment exemplaire.
"Nous n’avons plus besoin d’énergie fossile. Nos besoins énergétiques sont maintenant sept fois moins élevés que dans notre siège précédent, qui avait pourtant la même superficie", expliquait Max Jadot, CEO de BNP Paribas Fortis, lors de l’inauguration officielle du siège le 4 février dernier. "L’espace invite à venir travailler à Bruxelles."
Un bâtiment à la pointe, primé lors de la grand-messe de l’immobilier. Mais une insulte pour les amoureux du patrimoine. Certains n’hésitent pas à parler de "bruxellisation", cette folie urbanistique des années 60 et 70 qui conduisit à la destruction de pans entiers de constructions remarquables comme la Maison du Peuple ou l’autel Aubecq de Victor Horta. Le courroux cible aujourd’hui le siège aux lamelles blanches du quartier de la gare Centrale, qui font penser à un radiateur géant. Trop massif, trop moderne, trop en décalage…
Tout a commencé, bien avant la remise du prix cannois. Henri Simons, ancien échevin de l’Urbanisme de la Ville de Bruxelles de 1995 à 2006, dit dans un post Facebook tout le mal qu’il pense du nouveau QG du bancassureur.
"Échec architectural. Techniques affreuses sur le toit. Écrasement du Palais des Beaux-Arts", écrit l’ancien Ecolo devenu PS, suivi d’un émoji dépité. Une photo accompagne le commentaire, avec en avant-plan Bozar, conception tardive et Art déco de Victor Horta, écrasé visuellement par le siège de Fortis.

Next up on our street running tour was Warsaw, Indiana. A timely Facebook post let us know we had two trains in the area. We confirmed with another source and the results are what you see here. A lengthy 19K rolls through the middle of Hickory Street.
Just for the record, the boring normal vision view of a neat spot that we (JP and KO) found just north of Pleasant Lake, IN on Sunday 12/16/2018. They've already very well covered the creative views, but it's hard to go wrong with a clean nicely painted 45 car body. The train left Reading MI in an early morning fog that cleared by the time it got out out of Michigan and stayed clear until 10 minutes after the last shot in Ohio. Thanks to TC for paying attention to facebook posts and communicating to a good sized contingent that documented this move. Great time hanging with the youngsters for a day.
