I found out on Facebook that my friend, who I originally became friends with on Flickr, has passed away. I never met him, but he was very kind and encouraging to me during my own health problems. He was no longer active on Flickr, but we still occasionally commented on each other’s Facebook posts. R.I.P. Marcel!

A shot taken on Friday 16 Junes. The location was thanks to a Facebook post. For locals it is just outside the village of Lavant Nr Chichester. It is off New Road leading to the Airfield where Fordwater Lane turns into a path and a little way down a footpath turns off and runs alongside the field and the poppies.
The shot was taken with a Sony A550 with a tamron 18-200 at 55mm. 1 image processed with Camera Raw. This was followed by Topaz Clarity and increasing brightness a little, The colours are natural.

Meet one of Banff's famous grizzlies, Bear 142, a six-year old female at the time of this photo. Now 15, she is well known to park staff and locals. She typically hangs out in the corridor between Lake Louise and Banff town, and is tolerant of people - so far - presumably because the proximity keeps her cubs a little safer from predation by male grizzlies. Still, she lost two of her most recent litter of three, probably to a grizzly boar. Male grizzlies often kill and eat grizzly cubs. It's a brutal world.
If you Google "Banff Bear 142" you'll find lots of info about her, including a Facebook post with video from this year: she has 2 tiny cubs, and they are CUTE! She's also a lot bigger than in my photo...
Encroachment by photographers and selfie-takers is a big problem in Banff, and Parks Canada is looking at strategies to minimize dangerous encounters. I'm well aware of this and have never gone there with specific intent to photograph bears. The two grizzly shots closing out my Alberta series were random encounters; I am not one of the obnoxious Banff paparazzi.
In this case, 142 was on the other side of a fence, oblivious to me. Cars were zipping past, equally oblivious, as 142 foraged on a hillside at the edge of the forest. I used ON1 Resize to upscale the image, and also digitally removed her ear tag.

Grubb Run flows east-west along a deeply cut and forested valley before joining the Susquehanna. The south-facing side of this valley features an annual explosion of spring wildflowers. Such a delight to see. Thanks for stopping.

Northern Ohio fans had a choice of standard cab chases on Saturday 2/22/25. There was a pair of Rio Grande tunnel motors on the Wheeling train to Lima. And the usual pair of Tiger SD40's on the Wheeling turn to Willard. For something different I chose the W019 rail train on CSX with 2 GP38's after seeing a Facebook post when it left Cumberland. After many drab cloudy days, it was fun to let some horsepowers loose with a nice 125 mile chase. Managed 7 spots with one of them being lost to clouds and never waited more than 5 minutes. They were moving along quite nicely. This spot shows downtown Akron where the empty field to the left was the EL yard many years ago.

I did not take these photos. They were on a Facebook post I saw today along with the following narrative. I was so moved by it that I decided to share it here, too.
"I saw these images on @timkennedymma feed. Please, look at each one. Pause, give them your consideration. America’s exceptional armed forces have altered the course of the world for the better. From the Union Army defeating slave owning confederates, to the Greatest Generation and her Allies vanquishing the Nazis or our special operators hunting down the perpetrators of 9/11. We count the names of each fallen solider lest they be countless. They are the good guys. They run to the sound of gunfire. They know pain and suffering we never will. They have given us the most free and decent society planet earth has ever seen. We run the risk of losing that decency when we fail to instill gratitude in the minds of our youth or the perspective of what it actually means to be free- should they never learn of the selfless sacrifice of our armed service members in the face of oppressive evil. On October 16, 2024 there was no LA&L road train, so I was not able to catch any black and yellow Alco's. At around 12:45pm I saw a Facebook post that NS train 264 was by Warsaw. I figured if I hustled, I should be able to beat the train down to Browns Crossing, NY along the Canisteo River. I arrived at the location and within 5 minutes the train arrived, perfectly timed with a sucker hole. I got a black and yellow GE instead of Alco's, but it was still an excellent score.

Un bâtiment exemplaire.

He was soon apprehended and tossed into solitary confinement.
The yarn finishes, “The rebels seem to admire the cool audacity of the chap, and Beauregard laughed heartily at his pranks.”
In a Facebook post on March 19, 2019, John Laking noted, "In England this is called 'cocking a snook ' if he used his left to extend the gesture that would be ' long bacon .'"

As I was driving around the Big Island looking for a good spot to shoot the sunset, I spotted a great beach with a lava field and decided to check it out. Originally, I hadn't intended to do any long exposures, so I left the tripod and ND filters in the car. As I walked around, I found a complex system of pools and drains that would look beautiful with LE, so I waited until after the sun went down, got down low and tucked into a solid 3-point shooting stance to get some 1/2 sec exposures hand held. This is an upload from my Facebook post, so it probably won't show EXIF data, but here you go: Nikon Zf Nikkor 24-200mm f/4-6.3 @24MM ISO 100 1/2 sec F/8.

Snared Fox at Cape Spear National Park!
I am not interested in TRAPS discussions at this point, as it will needlessly fill the thread with impertinent discussion at this time!
The Fox Was last seen by me yesterday heading in the south direction on the East Coast Trail not far from the lighthouse.
I am so saddened and with a sickened feeling in my stomach. I posted a photo of this beautiful Red Fox yesterday, and hadn't looked at other photos I had of the same fox until now. I had a deep sinking feeling in my heart knowing that this fox could have been getting the attention that it desperately needs since yesterday.
There is obviously a snare caught around it's front right leg. This animal cannot hunt fairly in this condition. I have no way of knowing how long it's had a snare around it's leg, but you can imagine that it has cut off the circulation and that is not going to help keep that leg warm with no blood flowing through to it. This animal is in distress! Wildlife needs to get a cage trap out there ASAP and trap it properly so that it can be taken to Salmonier Nature Park for the attention that it requires!
