Wednesday, February 1st of 2023 was a monumental day in the re-birth of the East Broad Top Railroad in Rockhill Furnace, PA. On this day, the first steam locomotive to be restored to active service by the EBT Foundation made its first moves under power, completing a rebuilding process which has taken nearly 3 years. Pictured here is EBT #16, the first of the "big boiler", superheated, Mikados purchased by the railroad in 1916. This engine was the last to be overhauled by the EBT before the railroad shut down as a common carrier in 1956 and she was never run during the tourist era. Judged to be in perhaps the best condition of the 6 engines in the roundhouse, she was selected to be the first to be returned to service. The operation you see here was her first movement under steam in 67 years.

In this image, the crew has been running the locomotive back and forth within the yard and they have alighted to check on the health of their new horse. On the left, EBT Master Mechanic Dave Domitrovich walks around the pilot having just checked the bearings on the engineer's side with his ungloved left hand. The gentleman in the middle, looking over the running gear is Linn Moedinger, retired President and CMO of the Strasburg Rail Road and who has been working as an advisor to the EBT crew. The gentleman on the right is Nevin Byers, who appeared to be firing the locomotive on most of the runs. After making perhaps a dozen runs back and forth the 16 retired to the roundhouse, having completed and apparently successful first day in service.

Because this operation was not announced publicly in advance, my photos from this day were the result of a lucky combination of circumstances. On the previous day, I had hopped a flight from Boston to Baltimore in order to attend a long-scheduled photo shoot on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. After my arrival, I drove part way from BWI to Cumberland, overnighting in Frederick, MD. When I awoke the following morning, I just happened to see a Facebook post that the EBT Railroad had made, depicting an engine steaming in front of the roundhouse. Given that I was perhaps a 90-minute drive from Orbisonia, I elected to take a detour up to EBT instead of driving directly to Cumberland, not knowing if I would be able to see anything from spaces open to the public. The EBT yard is a restricted area and is not open to the public. Fortunately, the operation was visible from Highway 994 and an adjacent parking lot, where numerous locals and myself were able to get a few photos of what was a momentous event for both the EBT crews and the people of Orbisonia. Everyone I talked to was ecstatic that steam had returned to this historic railroad town.

Firstly, I understand the emotion involved. I don't know anyone that's not feeling absolutely sick about it. The helplessness, the frustration, the gut wrenching sadness - you are not alone. We feel it too. We may not be fighting fires but many of us are donating money to help those affected.

Terrence Credlin has organised a photoshoot on Australia Day where participation involves a mandatory donation to the Red Cross Bushfire Appeal (Melbourne based creatives who haven't yet been invited - please let me know and I'll add you).

I believe people overall are doing what they can. Please don't turn on us or anyone else who hasn't done anything to deserve it. We aren't the problem or the cause and we care too.

Herzprobleme nach Corona-Impfung – und immer mehr Berichte über verstorbene Jugendliche

Seit der Empfehlung der STIKO für Impfungen gegen COVID-19 bei Kindern und Jugendlichen ab zwölf Jahren mehren sich Berichte insbesondere über junge Menschen, die nach der Impfung plötzlich verstorben sind. Herzprobleme scheinen eine große Rolle zu spielen.

Während die Kampagne gegen Ungeimpfte immer repressivere Blüten treibt, mehren sich Berichte über Jugendliche, die nach der Impfung mutmaßlich daran starben. Neben den fünf verstorbenen 12- bis 16-Jährigen, die der letzte Sicherheitsbericht des Paul-Ehrlich-Instituts (PEI) als die bis Ende September gemeldeten Verdachtsfälle aufführt, erreichten inzwischen zwei weitere Fälle eines Neunzehnjährigen und eines Zwölfjährigen die Medien. Ein mutmaßlicher weiterer Fall kam durch einen Facebook-Post in Umlauf – von einer Mutter, die um ihre fünfzehnjährige Tochter trauert.

Kurz nach der Impfung: Schüler stirbt auf Klassenfahrt

Wie der Privatsender RTL am Donnerstag berichtete, starb ein 19 Jahre alter Schüler aus Stuttgart kurz nach seiner COVID-19-Impfung. Man habe ihn bereits Ende Oktober während einer Klassenfahrt in einer Herberge in Berlin tot in seinem Bett aufgefunden, heißt es. Die Staatsanwaltschaft ermittelt. Der Verdacht: Die Impfung könnte die Ursache sein.

Der Schüler habe sich vor seinem Tod nicht wohl gefühlt und nicht an Ausflügen teilgenommen, sagte der Sprecher der Generalstaatsanwaltschaft Berlin, Martin Steltner, gegenüber dem Sender. Erst kurz vor der Fahrt hätte sich der junge Mann impfen lassen. Seine Behörde, so Steltner, habe daher eine gerichtsmedizinische Untersuchung angeordnet. Das Ergebnis erwartet er aber erst "in zwei bis drei Monaten".

Tödliche Herzmuskelentzündung bei Zwölfjährigem

Kurz zuvor hatte zunächst der NDR den Fall eines 12-jährigen Jungen aus der Umgebung von Cuxhaven publiziert. Der Landkreis hatte den Fall demnach zuvor veröffentlicht, weil es "Gerüchte in sozialen Medien" zu dem Tod des Kindes – zwei Tage nach einer Pfizer/BioNTech-Impfung – gegeben hätte. Der Rundfunksender spekulierte zwar auch über eine Vorerkrankung des Kindes, fügte aber dennoch zugleich an:

"Die Experten des Rechtsmedizinischen Instituts am UKE hielten es laut vorläufigem Obduktionsprotokoll für wahrscheinlich, dass der Tod auf die Impfung zurückzuführen sei."

Zehn Tage später, am 15. November, relativierte der öffentlich-rechtliche norddeutsche Sender den Vorfall jedoch weiter. Er titelte: "Obduktion: Zwölfjähriger starb nicht allein durch Impfung". Der Tod des Jungen sei "auch" einer "besonders schweren, impfunabhängigen Vorerkrankung des Herzens" zuzuschreiben, heißt es darin. Dass der Zwölfjährige allerdings auch ohne Impfung am selben Tag verstorben wäre, erscheint indes dennoch wenig plausibel. Darauf geht der NDR aber nicht ein. Er nennt den Tod des Kindes nun einen "tragischen Einzelfall".

COVID-19-Impfungen: Mehr als doppelt so viele Nebenwirkungen gemeldet wie in den letzten 20 Jahren

Laut einem Bild-Bericht vom 6. November litt der verstorbene Junge allerdings an einer unerkannten Herzmuskel-Entzündung – und die betrifft vor allem männliche Jugendliche und junge Männer. Einige Länder verimpften deshalb die mRNA-Vakzine von Pfizer/BioNTech und Moderna nur noch eingeschränkt oder gar nicht mehr an Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene.

15-Jährige stirbt nach Pfizer-Spritze – Staatsanwaltschaft ermittelt

Einen weiteren traurigen Todesfall einer fünfzehnjährigen Jugendlichen aus dem Landkreis Bayreuth nach einer Impfung mit dem Vakzin von Pfizer/BioNTech machte die Mutter des Opfers auf Facebook publik. Ihre Tochter Cheyenne B. habe "den Kampf heute Morgen verloren", schrieb sie am Mittwoch und warnte: "Passt auf eure Kinder auf bei der Impfung."

Kurz darauf veröffentlichte sie ein Statement ihrer anderen Tochter, in dem die Todesumstände umrissen wurden. Sie schrieb, dass ihre Schwester anderthalb Wochen nach der Impfung mit dem Vakzin von Pfizer/BioNTech "aus dem Nichts einen Herzstillstand" erlitten habe. In den darauffolgenden zwei Wochen habe das Mädchen in der Klinik im Koma gelegen und in dieser Zeit mehrfach reanimiert werden müssen. Es werde ermittelt.

Der Leitende Oberstaatsanwalt der Staatsanwaltschaft Bayreuth, Martin Dippold, bestätigte gegenüber der Autorin auf Anfrage den Fall. Die geschilderten Einzelheiten stimmten, der Fall liege ihm vor. Er fügte an: "Es werden Ermittlungen zur Klärung der Todesursache aufgrund des jungen Alters der Verstorbenen geführt." Weitere Angaben könnten derzeit nicht gemacht werden, so Dippold.

Weitere Todesfälle nach Impfung bei Kindern und Jugendlichen

Bereits bis Ende September listet das Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI) insgesamt 1.802 gemeldete Todesfälle nach einer COVID-19-Impfung auf, darunter fünf Fälle verstorbener Kinder. Die 12- bis 16-Jährigen seien zwischen 2 bis 24 Tage nach einer Gabe des Vakzins von Pfizer/BioNTech gestorben, heißt es dort.

Laut PEI sei bei drei Jungen eine schwere Vorerkrankung bekannt gewesen. Einer starb demnach an diversen Blutgerinnungsstörungen mit Lungenblutung, ein weiterer habe einen Kreislauf-Zusammenbruch erlitten und das dritte Opfer sei einer Lungenembolie erlegen. Ein weiteres 16-jähriges Mädchen habe eine Herzrhythmusstörung nicht überlebt; die genaue Todesursache eines weiteren 12-Jährigen sei dem Institut nicht bekannt.

Da die drei aufgeführten Fälle erst nach September 2021 auftraten, sind sie im PEI-Bericht noch nicht enthalten. Die Ständige Impfkommission (STIKO) am Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) empfahl die Impfung für Minderjährige ab 12 Jahren am 16. August. Das Risiko von Herzmuskelentzündungen, insbesondere bei männlichen Jugendlichen, war ihr bereits bekannt.

STIKO-Chef im September: Kein Kind unter 17 starb ausschließlich an COVID-19

Wie viele Opfer das Coronavirus tatsächlich bei Minderjährigen forderte, ist aufgrund der Zählweise des RKI nicht bekannt. Um als COVID-19-Todesfall eingestuft zu werden, reicht ein positiver Test aus. Wie lange dieser vor dem Tod zurückliegen darf, ist in Deutschland nach Angaben des RKI gegenüber der Autorin nicht bekannt.

Nach offiziellen Daten starben seit März 2020 insgesamt 17 junge Menschen zwischen 10 und 19 Jahren mit einem positiven PCR-Test, also "an oder mit" dem Coronavirus. Ende September hatte der STIKO-Vorsitzende Thomas Mertens gegenüber den Medien allerdings geäußert, es sei bisher "kein Kind unter 17 ausschließlich an COVID-19 gestorben". Es könnten also bereits mehr Kinder nach der Impfung als an COVID-19 gestorben sein. Ob in diesen Fällen Obduktionen vorgenommen wurden oder werden, wollte das PEI auf Anfrage der Autorin nicht verraten. Demnach sind dafür ausschließlich die Behörden vor Ort zuständig.

Can anyone explain what is happening with this "Dolly Fly" please? I can't imagine it is trying to eat a worm, so is the worm trying to enter or exit the fly? I watched it for several minutes, but due to storm Hector, I wasn't able to follow it to conclusion. I think the fly is female, there was a male in attendance and he was quite animated, flashing his signal feet.

Edit - Update. Info from replies to my Facebook post and flickrs rockwolf, seems that this fly is predatory and is in fact, eating the worm.

The abandoned Mt. Jackson Mill in Mt. Jackson, VA in the Shenandaoh Valley. Another find on my drive back to Houston. The US flags blowing in the breeze first caught my eye.

Mt. Jackson Mills, Mt. Jackson, Virginia, dating to 1872. From the National Register of Historic Places nomination form for the Mt. Jackson Historic District: "The original gristmill was built by early area landowner Benjamin Allen prior to 1746; however, the present mill was built in 1872 by Dr. J. I. Triplett and was known as Shenandoah Farmers Milling Company. The mill is a large, frame, gambrel-roofed, multi-level building that originally featured an overshot wheel, but was remodeled in 1888 to incorporate the roller system of milling, and again in 1919 to add modern ball-bearing machinery. Long regarded as a local landmark, the Mt. Jackson Mill continued in operation until 1984."

So many people joined in from the sidelines that the march came to a halt a number of times. The starting marchers reached Seattle Center more than three miles away before the last of the marchers gathered at Judkins Park left the park. Crowd estimates ranged from 125,000 to 175,000.
