It's incredibly hard to get a nice shot of the pups with the tag facing the right way... So I had to cheat with this one and photoshop the tag so it's facing the camera... Naughty me...

 

I just love the way he's looking straight at the camera (or me). He's such a goofy little man!

Day 175 of 365 - August 26th, 2012

 

As I mentioned in the previous picture, I decided to bring out my scope to pay a tribute to Neil Armstrong. This picture is a hand held eyepiece projection through a 24mm University Optics Konig eyepiece. The proper way to do this is with a T-mount. Since I do not have one yet, I thought I would play around a bit. The 24mm eyepiece mounted in my 102mm f11 refractor gives a magnification of 46x. With an average distance from Earth to the Moon of approximately 230,000 miles, this view of the moon is seen as if you were only 5000 miles from the surface. The picture is not the greatest, but I did not think it was too bad for the method I used. I am going to get a T-mount soon.

For more than twenty years, a leaky pipe on 33rd Street beneath the Hell Gate Bridge viaduct approach submerged more than a hundred square feet of heavily-trafficked sidewalk under a festering cesspool of standing water. Astoria Scum River, as it was called, stretched the entire width of the sidewalk, and as winter approached, the river iced over and became particularly hazardous to cross.

 

Astoria Scum River Bridge was constructed to offer Astorians an opportunity to safely cross this hazard. The unauthorized bridge was a gift to the pedestrians of Astoria in the absence of successful municipal efforts to ameliorate the problem.

 

The bridge was made at zero cost entirely from recycled materials: an old work bench found on the curb, rescued screws from a disassembled desk, and a metal plate from an expired electrical component. It was installed and dedicated on December 30th, 2009.

 

On January 25th, 2010, Astoria Scum River Bridge was the subject of a commendation from the office of NYC Council Member Peter F. Vallone, Jr., accompanied by a pledge to work with Amtrak to re-route Astoria Scum River off the sidewalk.

 

Two days later, Amtrak workers began construction work. Astoria Scum River was quickly routed off the sidewalk, and within a couple months, custom-made grates were installed to complete the project. The bridge, no longer needed, was de-installed on March 20th, 2010 and returned to the curb whence it came.

 

Astoria Scum River Bridge is an unauthorized city improvement by Jason Eppink and Posterchild.

SF Bay RR, 21 June 2018

 

The San Francisco Bay RR operates on the southeast side of San Francisco on and near the port. It uses two Alco S2 switchers that were built for the State Belt RR, later the San Francisco Belt RR, the line that served the piers of the Port of San Francisco for many years.

 

As shipping companies moved to containerization, the Port of Oakland became the big northern California container terminal and most of the piers of the Port of San Francisco were abandoned or converted to uses other than marine freight, so the SF Belt RR found itself out of a job. After 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the Embarcadero Freeway, which had run over the SF Belt for most of its length, the freeway was removed, opening up San Francisco's waterfront and much of the Belt's trackage as converted for use by the Muni F line, which runs historic streetcars to Fishermen's Wharf, and the Muni lines that now server the Caltrain station.

 

Meanwhile, Pier 96, near Hunter's Point was converted to a container facility and the railroad's operations survived there. The line was renamed the San Francisco Bay RR and continued to use Alco S2s 23 and 25 to switch its customers.

 

Today, the railroad's main business is transloading dirty dirt from constructions and clean up sites in the Bay Area from trucks to railcars. It is owned by Waste Solutions Group, which also owns a fleet of hopper cars. The SF Bay and UP interchange on an as needed basis, with UP's South City job running into the SF Bay's yard on Cargo Way with empties and taking away loads.

 

A couple of railfans, Ryan and Ben, work for the railroad and Ryan invited me to come by for a visit. I had stopped by one afternoon a couple of years ago, and lucked out to see an S2 running around the yard a bit, but the railrroad usually goes on duty betweeen 4 and 5 am, switches cars for a few hours and then is done for the day. So, a visit to the SF Bay from Sacramento entailed a night in a hotel. It took a few tries for me to get time off from work scheduled on the same day the railroad was running.

 

Eventually, it all lined up and my alarm went off at 0315 at a hotel in Daly City, just south of the SF city limit.

 

I was at the yard by 4 and met Ben, who went out and started Alco 23. 25 is out of service with a bad bearing on the radiator fan drive shaft. Ryan explained that the SF Belt had done a jerry rigged repair of the shaft at some point and it was never documented, so nobody knew about the bearing until it failed. As a new low emission unit will be delivered in the next few months, there is no reason to repair 25. 25 will be put on display somewhere, perhaps near the Ferry Building, while 23 will be held as backup for the new unit.

 

But for now, an S2 built in 1944 is doing the job it was built to do. If you think about it, that is as though the Virginia and Truckee had still been using the Reno and Genoa during WW2.

 

Shorty after I got there, Ben went out and fired up the 23. It has a block heater, so it started easily with a puff of white smoke. He did an inspection of the engine, including checking the journal boxes. We then went back into the office and waited for Ryan, brakeman Johnny, and engineer Nick to arrive. The crew plotted their switching moves for the day. Ryan, who is yard operations manager, suggested that I get some blue hour photos from the ground as empties were switched and then we rode 23 while they switched loads.

 

Each car has dirt from one particular construction site and the dirt from sites cannot be mixed as different sites will have different contamination. UP ships it to a dump site in Nevada, where it is processed. Ryan explained that sometimes they can use dividers in a car to separate dirt from different projects if there is not that much.

 

Right now transshipping dirty dirt is the SF Bay's only business, but there a couple of other industries are interested in bringing new business. The line that crosses the Illinois St. bridge has been out of service for a couple of years as there currently no customers north of Islais Creek.

 

We rode the S2 for a while after the day brightened, then got down and Ryan drove me around in a company car to get some more angles as they switched. He then had other work to do and I shot the end of 23's work day as well as 25, some spare Alco parts and another project of Waste Solutions, goats that are leased out for natural weed control. Ryan said that since Waste Solutions got more cars, they can't use their goats as much for weed control in the yard as most of the yard tracks are occupied.

 

The crew called it a day for switching about 0800 and then would be doing other work in the yard for the rest of their work day.

I met Peter Gronquist about a year ago and immediatly connected to this out-of-the-box thinker and artist. Gronquist is well known for his Gucci rocket launchers, chain saws, and other art works that feature high end brand names on weapons of destruction. No stranger to utilyzing taxidermy in his works, where animal's horns have been replaced by gold plated AK-47s, Gronquist continues to juxtapose luxury with nature while bringing up questions about money, culture, and society.

You never for get your first. Haha. This was the first mannequin I have ever painted and I love him but I have got to get all these people outta here!

Having visited this dockyard in August 2017, it brought back many memories for me having sailed out from there in 1963 on H.M.S. Venus to the Azores. I was then a Cook in the Royal Navy serving at H.M.S Ganges in Suffolk. It was a cold winter day then and I was over the side of the ship scrubbing it clean before we sailed. Arriving at the entrance it was a bit disconcerting to see the queues of people waiting to get in. The queue took 40 minutes to allow where I was to arrive at the ticket gate. A bag search told me I was to leave my Monopod with them for safe keeping at the ticket office. This also applies to Tripods for camera equipment so remember this.

The first ship you see is the H.M.S Warrior on the left hand side dock. This ship was the fastest, largest and most powerful warship in the world when she was launched. Such was her reputation that enemy fleets were intimidated by her obvious supremacy and deterred from attacking Britain at sea although she never fired a shot in anger. HMS Warrior was a 40 gun steam powered armoured frigate built for the Royal Navy. She was the name ship of the Warrior-class ironclads. Warrior and her sister ship HMS Black Prince were the first armour-plated, iron-hulled warships, and were built in response to France's launching in 1859 of the first ocean-going ironclad warship, the wooden-hulled Gloire. Warrior conducted a publicity tour of Great Britain in 1863 and spent her active career with the Channel Squadron. On board HMS Warrior which was launched in 1860, Britain’s first iron-hulled, armoured battleship. The ship is powered by steam and sail and was the largest, fastest and most powerful warship of her day and had a lasting influence on naval architecture and design. Work and life on board reflected both the changes the Royal Navy experienced as it evolved into a professional service and shifts in Victorian society.Built to encounter the latest of the French ships, Warrior was, in her time, the ultimate sea warrior. Yet by creating a new era in naval technology, she very soon became outdated. After 22 years’ service, Warrior’s hull was to be used as a depot, floating school and an oil jetty. Painstakingly restored in Hartlepool and then back home to Portsmouth since 1987, Warrior is a unique survivor of the once formidable Victorian Navy and now serves as a museum ship, visitor attraction, popular private hire venue and more. HMS Warrior was rescued in the 1980’s, restored and brought back home to Portsmouth and is owned by Warrior Preservation Trust, an independent charity. Sadly, time has it taken its toll and today she is in a sorry state - her bulwarks, which keep her watertight, have failed and are deteriorating to a point which places her at significant risk.

Next ship I saw was H.M.S. Victory is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, ordered in 1758, laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765. She is best known for her role as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. She additionally served as Keppel's flagship at Ushant, Howe's flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent. After 1824, she was relegated to the role of harbour ship. In 1922, she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship. She has been the flagship of the First Sea Lord since October 2012 and is the world's oldest naval ship still in commission. This the world’s most famous warship HMS Victory is crumbling under her own weight. An 18-month programme to bring this historic ship back to its original condition. H.M.S. Victory has been sitting in dry dock in Portsmouth since 1922 supported by 22 steel cradles positioned at six metre intervals. It has been well recorded that the 252 year old ship is collapsing ( so to speak ) under her own weight and following a detailed laser scan of 89.25 billion measurements and computer modelling, a new support system has been designed to record how the ship would sit in water.

The Mary Rose Museum is run by the Mary Rose Trust. The construction has been a challenge because the museum has been built over the ship in the dry dock, which is now a listed monument. During construction of the museum, conservation of the hull continued inside a sealed hotbox. In April 2013, the polyethylene glycol sprays were turned off and the process of controlled air drying began. In 2016 the hotbox walls were removed and after reopening on 20 July 2016 the ship is currently on display behind glass. This new museum displays most of the artefacts recovered from within the ship in context with the conserved hull. Since the opening it has been visited by over a million people. The museum is dedicated to the 16th century Tudor navy warship Mary Rose as well as the historical context in which she was active. The museum opened in 1984.T he Mary Rose is a Tudor ship that was built in 1510. In service for 34 years, it sank in 1545 and then discovered in 1971 and was raised in 1982.

Another ship I went to visit was HMS M.33 which is the only sole remaining British veteran of the bloody Dardanelles Campaign of 1915-1916, and also the Russian Civil War which followed. The ship is one of just three British warships from World War I still in existence. HMS M.33 was built in 1915 on the orders of the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill. She was a floating gun platform designed to bombard coastal positions from the sea. Her first active operation was the support of the British landings at Suvla during the Battle of Gallipoli in August 1915. She remained stationed at Gallipoli until the evacuation in January 1916. She served in the Mediterranean for the remainder of the War and was involved in the seizure of the Greek fleet at Salamis Bay in 1916.

USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Africa Oren Whyche-Shaw inaugurated Gbegbeyesie “A & B” Cluster of Schools, a USAID-supported three-story, 18-unit cluster of three public primary schools in Dansoman, Accra on December 8, 2015. Also present at the inauguration were officials from the Ministry of Education, Members of Parliament, and the Honorable Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra. The Gbegbeyesie “A & B” Cluster of Schools houses three standard primary schools in one building and includes science and computer laboratories as well as a library.

Rehearsals for the Ann Arbor Dance Classics 2019 Recital on Wednesday June 5th, 2019. Performances were held on Friday June 7th and Saturday June 8th at Milan High School (Milan, Michigan). These are photos from the audience as I was not stage managing this year. More time for pictures!

Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater (sweet) lake in North -East India, is famous for the phumdis (heterogeneous mass of vegetation, soil, and organic matters at various stages of decomposition) of different geometrical shapes floating over it. People live on the larger floating islands.

 

Some of the structures are man made for fish farming.

For the girls' fourth photoshoot challenge of the contest, they were assigned to pose in a field of flowers aswell as asking to portray a flower of their choice in the process. Each girls' flower was represented through their makeup and along with each flower came an emotion that the girls had to represent in their photos.

För 3000 år sen stod havet högre än idag och i detta området fanns en stor havsvik. Bohuslän var trevligt. Ungefär som Sydfrankrike idag. Lövskogarna växte täta men granen var sällsynt. Kring boplatserna öppnade sig vidsträckta betesmarker. Mot slutet av bronsåldern blev klimatet kyligare.

 

Bronsåldersgården var ett storhushåll och släktens olika generationer bodde tillsammans. Husen var stora. Upp till 40 meter långa och 6-8 meter breda.

 

Jordbuk, boskap och fiske gav den huvudsakliga näringen. Jakt och insamling av bär, frukt och nötter i skogen var viktiga komplement. Man jagade med pil och båge och fångade med nät och fällor. Tamdjuren var ko, får, get, svin, hund och häst.

 

Jorden plöjdes med årder, ett primitivt redskap av trä som drogs av oxar. De flesta arbetredskapen gjordes av trä, ben och sten. Brons var en dyrbar maktsymbol. Den importerades från olika delar av Europa och användes framförallt till smycken och vapen.

 

Under bronsåldern förändras gravskicket. Till skillnad från stenålderns släktgravar byggs nu stora rösen i majestätiska lägen uppe på bergstoppar. De var avsedda för en enda person.

 

Här finns mer än 80 skepp. De två största är märkliga konstruktioner med sköldar. Kanske var skeppen en bild av färden till dödsriket. Besättningen symboliseras av bemanningsstrecken. Ibland ser man krokliknande figurer

som tolkas som män som blåser i bronslurar. I några fall ser man män med hotfullt lyftade yxor.

 

En av ryttarna har en grotesk överdriven näsa och rider på en svankryggig häst. En annan ryttare har en ståtligare hållning. Denne vill visa sin skicklighet genom att rida stående. Hans sköld är av en typ som var vanlig under tidig järnålder.

 

Tamhästen introducerades i Sydskandinavien någon gång mellan 3000 och 2000 f Kr och fick under bronsåldern en stor betydelse i mytologin. Under forntiden förekom hästoffer. Som en del av riten åt man upp hästköttet medan huvud och underben offrades till gudarna i mossar och sjöar.

 

Kanske störst av alla i världen är Spjutguden. 2,35 meter hög och gjord sannolikt 1200 - 1000 f Kr, mitt under bronsåldern.

3000 years ago, the sea was higher here than today and in this area there was one big sea bay. Bohuslän was nice. Just like south of France today. The deciduous forests grew dense but the grain was rare. Around the settlements opened

breeding pastures. Towards the end of the Bronze Age, the climate became colder.

 

The Bronze Age Farm was a large household and the family's different generations lived together. The houses were large. Up to 40 meters long and 6-8 meters wide.

 

Beech, cattle and fishing gave the main business. Hunting and collection of berries, fruits and nuts in the woods were important complementary. Man chased with arrow and arched and caught with nets and traps. Tamdjuren was cow, sheep, goat, pig, dog and horse.

 

The earth was plowed with veins, a primitive tool of wood drawn from oxen. The Most of the tools were made of wood, bone and stone. Bronze was a precious one symbol of power. It was imported from different parts of Europe and used

especially for jewelry and weapons.

 

During the Bronze Age, the grave ship changes. Unlike the graves of the Stone Age they are now being built in majestic places on mountain peaks. They were intended for a single person.

 

Here are more than 80 ships. The two largest are strange constructions with shields. Perhaps the ship was a picture of the journey to the death kingdom. Crew was symbolized by staffing lines. Sometimes crochet-like figures are seen

Which are interpreted as men blowing in bronze headphones. In some cases you see men with threatening lifted axes.

 

One of the riders has a grotesque exaggerated nose and rides on a rugged horse. Another rider has a more striking attitude. This one wants to show his skill through ride standing. His shield is of a type that was common during the early Iron Age.

 

The horse was introduced in South Scandinavia sometime between 3000 and 2000 BC and gained a great importance in mythology during the Bronze Age. In the early days occurred horse sacrifice. As part of the rite they ate the horse meat while the head and lower leg Sacrificed to the gods in mosses and lakes.

 

Perhaps the greatest of all in the world is the Spear God. 2.35 meters high and probably made 1200 - 1000 BC, in the middle of the Bronze Age.

For my money, the Diggle area is the most attractive section of the former LNWR line between Huddersfield and Stalybridge. On June 18th 1985, a nicely turned out Sulzer Type 4 'Peak' 45 143 '5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards' passes the site of Diggle Junction with the 1105 Liverpool Lime Street-Scarborough service. The water to the right is the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. The tunnel centre left is on the abandoned Collyhurst Loop, which left the main line at this point.
