This is Scala dei Turchi. Italian for "Stair of the Turks". It’s a rocky cliff on the coast of Realmonte, near Porto Empedocle in southern Sicily, Italy. It has become a tourist attraction, partly due to its mention in Andrea Camilleri's series of detective stories about Commissario Montalbano. Fact toy: Andrea Camilleri is originally from Porto Empedocle.

The Scala is coastal formation formed by marl. A sedimentary rock consisting of calcium carbonate or lime-rich mud or mudstone with, a characteristic white color. It lies between two sandy beaches, and is accessed through a limestone rock formation in the shape of a staircase, hence the name. The latter part of the name derives from the frequent raids carried on by Moors.

In August 2007, the municipality of Realmonte applied for the inclusion of the Scala dei Turchi in the UNESCO Heritage List.

In February 2020, following years of complaints about the poor environmental protection of the site from erosion and tourist vandalism, Italian prosecutors seized control of the site. They ordered its temporary closure for monitoring, and announced that they were investigating a man who claimed ownership of the site in a dispute with the Realmonte local authority. One part is owned by the local authorities in Realmonte. Another part is subject of heated controversy, between the local administration and a man who claims to be the owner of a large area of the site, the one most visited by tourists. The prosecutor of Agrigento has announced that the man has been placed under investigation for occupation of public land.

Technical stuff

This panorama consists of 8 shots and spans roughly 188,93 degrees. The limited number of shot is due to the rather busy cliff and therefore not wanting to double up on people on the cliff. The shot have a range of 320ISO, f8.0, 1/2000-1/3200, -2/3 and 16 mils.

The initial pano was created with PS and post-production was done with LR. This included balancing the lighting condition between the white rocks and the surrounding areas. I also pushed the shadows al little so a lot of people on the formation are a bit more in tune. The original file was 17320x6816 pixels and 705MB (as I worked with only one layer). I resized it for Flickr to 3000x1181 (excluding the frame).

Finally, I added some copyright signs (in PS). The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the fact that my photos were frequently copied. So, don't bother commenting on that.

For the challenge, handing over the reins. This will be a long one.

1) I have decided to stick with Dunkel because simply put, Rylee hates playing the camera game. I get frustrated and she gets sad and worried - it is simply not worth it. If she is up for a picture, I'll grab it. That statement is 3 years in the making! lol

2) I look at this picture and I think.....this is me...Looking into the mirror a lot lately. My mom has died, both my parents are gone and 2020 is the big 50 birthday. My heart and soul have come to really understand things lately - I am truly at peace with myself, and where I am at in life. It is liberating, but I am also a bit shocked and in disbelief that I am turning 50.

So here's to 2020 - the year of finally being 100% comfortable in my own skin. The year of understanding that no one, no dog is perfect and that you work with the pluses.

A very rough timeline of my BftM mocs (I left out most of the rocketships) but it's the evolution of weaponry I have in my head whenever I build something for BftM. It's not meant as a rigid standard or anything as I still want flexibility to do whatever I want but more of a general sweep of technological progress, beginning with unarmed, delicate landing rockets of the early surveyor teams and culminating with giant, colourful, wind-up walking mecha firing lasers and rockets.

I need to flesh out more stuff at either end: more early landers and more large robot walkers. The new curvy parts that have come out the large couple of years get me itching to do more in this theme.

Thank you so much for the beautiful testimonial!!!

I grew up in a dysfunctional household and learned to use reading as an escape at a very young age. Nancy Drew was a favorite of mine as a child, partly because I loved mysteries and partly because I was always trying to find that strong, brave, clever Nancy in me. In some ways, I don't think I've ever stopped looking for Nancy -- and that's not such a bad thing.

My share of yellow as a support for Manny Paquiao's campaign against poverty. His advocacy is in contradiction to his pro-life stance, I don't think that poverty can be eradicated for as long as reponsible parenthood is not taken seriously, thus, family planning must be inculcated into the minds of the people and practiced by every couple.

Every stem goes with a wish that he may be able to bring home another belt for the country's honor. Goodluck Manny. Wait, where's Mommy D? lol

Go Philippines!!!

For the first time in a decade I don't have any cardinals in the yard. I throw out a handful of seeds while I'm waiting on bucks to show and it usually pays off. Our beautiful world, pass it on.

For me a staple of the second life birthday event are the underwater exhibits. From aquariums, mermaids, and ocean exploration various artists and sims show off their works. You have creative builds like this where the glass opens up into the sea. It’s always incredible to see what they come up with. I’m glad I get to share this with you.

Visits, faves and comments are highly appreciated.

Taken way back when we lived in Étampes. We had hills there too, but not quite as many as there are here - and I'm sure they weren't as steep!

These houses were halfway up to the plateau and all built upwards, as you can tell from the front steps.

Not sure I'd want to take the shopping up those every week. Plus we'd get ice and snow there too!!

Better viewed large and thank you for your favourites. :)

Known for its agility and strength, the northern goshawk is one of the most effective and versatile hunters in the raptor world. Northern goshawks are found in forests across the Northern Hemisphere, preferring dense woodlands for nesting and hunting. They inhabit coniferous, mixed, and deciduous forests, often in remote areas away from human activity.

The northern goshawk is a versatile predator with a diet that includes:

Birds: pigeons, crows, grouse, and songbirds.

Mammals: squirrels, rabbits, hares, and other small mammals.

Occasionally: reptiles and insects.

They use their powerful talons and keen eyesight to ambush prey, often hunting through fast, maneuverable flights in dense forests.

For some people this is a shot they might have seen before by Niek, it's the same sunset, that's why. But okay.

Enjoy this sunset :-)

Goodbye for now. We will miss you.

My sister lives in rural Michigan where she and her husband have a beautiful house on lots of land with a good-sized, man-made pond in the backyard. Deer come down to the pond for the salt lick, to graze and to drink. It's also a safe haven for them during hunting season since Judy & Peter don't allow hunting on their property. Still, I cringe every time I hear a rifle shot when I visit at that time of year.

In the summer, they're harder to see since there's no white snow to set them off. But there's no missing them when they come to the near side of the pond and start munching on the flowers in my sister's garden. At that point, Judy lets the dog out (a lab) and the deer take off in a flash :-).

Thanks to my sister for sending me the original photo! She took it from inside the house looking out over the upper level deck (see below).

I don't know if you heard, but, Madge, a lovely flickr member and wonderful photographer passed away this past December. I was heartbroken to hear the news. She was always a bright light in the flickr world and her zest for arranging, capturing and sharing the beautiful things in and around her home was always inspiring. She was a master of still life and delightful puns and I will miss her dearly. If you know Madge, I am sure you felt the same and, if you didn't, head on over to her stream now www.flickr.com/photos/mytimeflickrcom/ . it is pure delight.

Mixed feelings when I see pups for sale in the street, good they aren't roaming the streets and will probably find a home. Bad to me is the breeding for profit by breeders, who only care about producing puppies that look fit enough to sell. Bacolod City, Philippines.
