Credits are important to me as I don't make the stuff and Second Life would be very dull if it weren't for all the creators who do. The variety here is amazing. In a lot of ways, making a photograph here is like making a movie -- you need people who make stuff from trees to monsters to clothes to poses, people who create the sets, the actors (avators) and photographers. It is a wonderful collaboration between a lot of people that results in one photograph.... well, ok, a lot of photographs, lol.

Fortaleza - Pinto Martins Int'l Airport (FOR/SBFZ)

November 07, 2017

A very very rare visitor not only in FOR but also in Brazil! The sleek and elegant 757 of Icelandair visited us operating for TACV as flight VR667/668. What a beauty!

Icelandair leased out two 757s, TF-FII and FIW, to help reestructuring TACV. They have several debts and their sole 757 is AOG with engine problems. Icelandair will now help TACV, leasing several aircraft to them.

Eyjafjallajökull is seen here at taxiway Alpha, shortly after arriving from Praia. This 757 is named after the Icelandic volcano, which made the news in 2010 after an eruption which caused big chaos in Europe's air traffic.

My Flickr friend, Jamie F, was so kind to guide me with settings with my new lens that I have been struggling with. I know this is a very static and fairly boring shot, but wanted to show her what her help did! I will have a hawk to show you tomorrow :>)

I was asked what tools I used to sculpt. Here they are.

Most of them are clay sculpting tools. I also use the engraver tool. The black cylinder is used for rolling. The jar is filled with oil to prevent sticking. The greenstuff can be purchased on ebay. I stick my greenstuff in the freezer when I am not using it (because it supposedly lasts longer).

A magpie can be happy or sad ....

Sometimes so happy that he sits on a high, high gum tree and rolls the sunrise around in his throat like beads of pink sunlight;

And sometimes so sad that you would expect the tears to drip off his beak.

Putting the Oakville into the OakvilleRailfan name, I got out to shoot the (sorta) closest train in my home here in you guessed it... Oakville.

I've seen the Oakville to Aldershot local (L554) only a handful of times, none of which were intentional trips to catch it. Mostly just waiting at Bronte for a train and L554 happens to roll past. For this shot I wanted to try shooting from in the parking lot across the tracks from Oakville GOs station area. I arrived in time to catch 73 with one of only a few "unwrapped" P42s on VIAs roster and a set of Budds. Shortly after that GOT 256 leading West came by, for a nice start to my afternoon in the parking lot. After that things died down till 554 started talking on the radio and building its train. This would take 30 ish minutes after which 554 would sit just shy of Chartwell Rd. for like an hour. While I sat in the car that train lead by 256 came back this time going East, this also happened with the other WB GO that came after 256s train. After now 2 trains had made it all the way to Aldershot and back 554 finally got the go ahead to book it out of the yard, bringing the day to this shot.

On this day of magic and joy, I'd like to take a moment to send you all best wishes: regardless of beliefs or celebrations; your frequency of visits, be they silent or spoken - to all of you - I wish you feathers for your heart and wings for your dreams.

Hope

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chillest land,

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Sorry for the uninspired snap shot this week. I was out in the sun all day yesterday taking pictures at a French Ring trial and I was just too worn out for much of anything today. I will try to take a more worth while shot this coming week.

It's Lee Friedlander's birthday today. That man and his photography has had a humongous influence on my own images. He is brilliant in his use of composition and I love his self portraiture. I'm back home, had a great birthday yesterday and will upload new pictures soon, but first here's one for her because she finished her 52 weeks project.

Rosa,

what I always liked best at your work ever since you wrote me a message back in november last year, saying that you were only one week ahead of me in your project, was the honesty you put into every single photo you uploaded. when looking at them, I knew that what I was seeing was the truth and nothing else. I believe that through your pictures, I got to know the real Rosa. not a girl you pretended to be or a girl others had made you, but just you. and what amazed me most was that, while being so far away and not even knowing you in person, I could relate to that girl. I understood how you felt and what you were wishing for.

I think during ‘our‘ year, we had a lot in common. finishing school is only one little aspect. both of us were waiting for things to change, to get better, and at the same time trying to accept everything the way it was. both of us were struggling, crying at times, and most likely once at a point where we just wanted to give up. both of us were living, discovering life. and both of us expressed all that in pictures, 52 pictures to be exact. what you created is epic, Rosa. those are 52 pictures that show you at your best, your worst, and somewhere in between. those are pictures that only belong to you and that describe the real you.

throughout the past year I looked at all those pictures and read all your texts. I did even if I didn’t say anything, because sometimes finding words is the hardest thing to do. but I want you to know that I was always there to listen to what you had to say, and I enjoyed every second of it.

congratulations on finishing and now being able to look back on the past year and remembering almost everything. every feeling, every tear, every laughter.

and most of all, thank you for inspiring me so often.

On a happier note, my middle child got to go back to school today after a 7 day absense. She's had a virus & lingering fever. I was so relieved when the thermometer read, 98.4 this morning. Woot!

BTW, I will try to answer all emails during Lily's nap time this afternoon. I'm sorry to those who are waiting for a reply.

For today's Steam Sunday here's a wide panoramic take on this scene that I lke from my second visit to New England's own Steam Mecca this past holiday season. It's a bit of a tradition to meet my Dad and step mom at the historic Griswold Inn for lunch and hot buttered rums and since we hadn't done that yet this year another visit to the lower Connecticut River valley was in order. As a nice bonus the weather was cold and clear with a light dusting of snow, perfect conditions for another try at shooting some steam after being skunked by engine problems a month prior.

For five weeks before Christmas the Valley Railroad (dba Essex Steam Train and Riverboat) runs an astonishing amount of holiday trains branded as the North Pole Express. Most are steam powered and this requires all three of their steam locomotives to be under steam at once. Excepting the Strasburg Railroad I don't believe there is anywhere else in the United States where three standard gauge rod connected locomotives are regularly under steam at the same time. But here, every weekend, it is a normal occurrence as the railroad runs 13 sold out departures between 2 and 8 PM every Sat and Sun (only 9 on Tue-Fri) using four consists one of which is led by one of the road's center cab GEs.

Here's Valley Railroad 2-8-2 'Mikado' New Haven 3025 leading the 2:30 PM train to the North Pole just a few minutes out of the station putting on a grand show thru the open field near MP 4.5 on the old New Haven Valley Line north of the bridge over the Falls River.

3025 is China Railways SY class built new in 1989 by the Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works for Pennsylvania's Knox & Kane Railroad where it spent its life until that railroad's demise following the collapse of that lines signature attraction, the Kinzua Viaduct. It was purchased by the VRR in 2008 and was rebuilt as a functional replica of a New Haven J-1 'Mikado' locomotive like the type that once plied this line in local service and re-numbered 3025, one number above the last of the original class on the NYNH&H.

Day for night is a set of cinematic techniques used to simulate a night scene while filming in daylight. It is often employed when it is too difficult or expensive to actually shoot during nighttime. Because both film stocks and digital image sensors lack the sensitivity of the human eye in low light conditions, night scenes recorded in natural light, with or without moonlight, may be underexposed to the point where little or nothing is visible. This problem can be avoided by using daylight to substitute for darkness. When shooting day for night, the scene is typically underexposed in-camera or darkened during post-production, with a blue tint added. Additional effects are often used to heighten the impression of night. As film stocks and video cameras have improved in light sensitivity, shooting day for night has become less common in recent years.

During the silent era of film, release prints were often tinted blue during night scenes to enhance the illusion. Although moonlight is not actually blue, it appears bluish to the human eye due to the Purkinje effect. To give a bluer appearance to scenes filmed in color, some techniques use 3200K tungsten-balanced rather than 5000K daylight-balanced film stock. The tungsten balance renders artificial lighting (street lights, headlights, lit windows, etc.) as white and unlit areas as "moonlight blue." With professional video cameras, color temperature adjustments are made to achieve the same effect. With digital post production now nearly universal, the color temperature adjustment is usually made in camera, to preserve the "white" artificial lights, but scene darkening is left to post production for finer control of the effect.

Underexposing the shot can add to the illusion of darkness or moonlight. It is typical to underexpose by about two f-stops. A neutral-density filter is often used to achieve this darkening, so that the camera aperture remains unchanged. (wikipedia)

The actual image was taken at 21 p.m. and darkened in postprocessing. Finally the blue was added.
