Taken in the early hours of this morning (approx. 3.00am) no wonder I feel tired!
Alarm was set for 1.30 - cloud obscured the skies, but then started to clear. I had already set the equipment up in the garage and then just had to open the door and avoid knocking it all over in the dark.
Not the ideal location as there is quite a lot of light pollution locally, but couldn't face driving to the coast after having been on the road all day. Also wanted to have a decent point of reference in the shots.
This is a composite of about 10 shots and there are at least 5 shooting star trails emanating from the North East Perseids atmosphere entry point. If you zoom in you can see a hint of the green / red colouring (green from Magnesium traces in the debris, red from it burning Nitrogen and Oxygen in the atmosphere).
There was also a very spectacular 'fireball' - of course not where the camera was pointing but low to the east it was very bright, reminded me of that Russian dash cam video.
Great to see - and did seem to be more frequent that previous occasions. Counted about 70 over a 2 and a half hour period.
If you want to try it, the settings over are a good starting point. To work out your exposure use the 600 rule - divide 600 by the true focal length of your lens (so 35mm on full frame 17 seconds, on crop sensor 10 seconds). This will avoid you introducing star trails on individual shots.
Sturdy tripod and shutter release locked down - or interval timer if you camera has one (my 7D Mk II does but would have also introduced more noise and captured less light with the shorter exposure).

First summer #milkyway arch of the season (southern hemisphere)! While I’d planned to capture this earlier, time and conditions weren’t on my side—until now.
This shoot was a race against the clock: nightfall began at 9:05 PM, and the moon rose at 10:47 PM, giving me just 1 hour and 42 minutes to frame and shoot 55 long-exposure images for this panorama at 24mm focal length (37mm full-frame equivalent). By keeping exposures to 20 seconds, I managed to nail the pano and even grab two more shots from different angles.
The location? Wanagarren Nature Reserve, a sprawling field of grass trees, recently scorched by a massive bushfire. These resilient beauties stand strong against the harshest conditions—even fire. Nature’s true survivors!

I posted a photo of a Great tit perched in the middle of a garden fork handle a few days ago. After a day or two of them landing on this and then onto the sunflower heart feeder by the side, I removed the fork, for them to fly directly onto the feeder. I used manual focus, setting the focal plane in line with the feeder, and with the use of pro-capture managed a few decent shots. Have a great weekend.
Focal Length Study - both were taken with a 100 mm macro lens. Looking close, allows for some little surprises.

Candid eye contact street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
Some might consider 70mm to be a short telephoto focal length although some consider the 85mm to be a long-standard lens. Personally I don't care. I shoot with my 24-70mm lens because of two reasons. First, it is a quality piece of glass that is pin sharp and, most importantly in Glasgow, weather resistant. Secondly, my old ankle injury and subsequent surgeries mean that I cannot move as quickly as I would like and that little bit of focal length reach means that I can get the shots that I see before me with a degree of flexibility. I find that 70mm is perfect for a candid portrait where the character is the subject, stopping down to f/3.5 isolates the subject nicely but still keeps the street background in context with the shot. Enjoy!
On a full frame, 35mm, the 50mm is seen as standard (although 40mm is closer to standard for the dimensions of the sensor or film of this size). 35mm is considered a wide standard and 85mm is considered a long standard. Let me know what you think! :)

Valley of Fire State Park is the oldest state park in Nevada, USA and was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1968. It covers an area of almost 42,000 acres (17,000 ha) and was dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.
Valley of Fire is located 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Las Vegas, at an elevation between 2,000–2,600 feet (610–790 m). It abuts the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at the Virgin River confluence. It lies in a 4 by 6 mi (6.4 by 9.7 km) basin.
Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates.
The park entry from Interstate 15 passes through the Moapa Indian Reservation. The park has a visitor center that should be visited by anyone planning any off-road activities.
The site is marked as Nevada Historical Marker #150.

Rough seeing conditions and a focal length limited camera gave me just enough resolution to get some of the details.

One of my small bottles now without a cork but filled with water. Placed on the decorative gift bag that I bought many months ago from our local convenience store, and lit with a single lamp.
Took a bit of time to align the lens and was deceived with what the camera was seeing and what I was - all about depth of field. When the lens was stopped down then I got the effect I saw and wanted.
Applied a 'focal black & white' filter to give attention to the colours within the bottle.
