Constructed in 1845-1846, the Old Market House was once the focal point of community life during Galena's heyday. This building served as the city market until 1910, during the decades of Galena’s greatest prosperity as a river port, lead-mining center, and commercial hub. The building also served as the seat of Galena government until 1938, and for years had two jail cells.

The Old Market House is a handsome Greek Revival building composed of a two-story brick central section topped with a frame cupola. One-story frame wings, projecting from the north and south, include covered porticoes. The central section’s first floor consists of an entry hall with staircases to the basement and second floor, and a large room providing exhibit and meeting space. The wings hold temporary local history exhibits and provide meeting space for community groups. The second floor contains the former city council chamber and city surveyor’s office.

Ownership of the building was transferred to the State of Illinois in 1947, and the Old Market House was restored in 1954-55. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It now operates as a state historic site under the auspices of the Illinois Historic Preservation Division of the Department of Natural Resources, and serves as both a welcome center and museum of local social history.

Never really know what's going to happen shooting portraits. Sometimes I need to work with a model for a couple of sessions to figure out which angles work and which do not. Other times I just approach complete strangers and shoot in a session that lasts no more than a minute or two. There's no rhyme or reason to the results.

This portrait falls into the complete stranger-two minute category. Increasingly I'm finding success has little to do with the technical side of photography. For me it's all about posing the person while making them feel comfortable with the process. I think my photographic skills plateaued some time back. It's the posing stuff where I show continued growth. People really seem to respond favorably when I sound like I know what I'm doing. And the more I do this sort of work, the more I actually believe I know what I am doing.

Odd thing about these portraits is the look often transcends the person's actual appearance. It's like seeing something only by looking at it from a certain angle. If I'm lucky, my lens aligns directly with the person's soul, even if just for an instant. It's as if a veil has been lifted, and in that instant a very intimate glimpse of the person is revealed. This girl's gaze and enigmatic smile are hauntingly compelling.

Thank you sincerely for your kind visit to my page and as well as your faves and personal comments (not badges). I really enjoy and appreciate!

Very often I take a photo with an image in my head. That sounds stupid I’m looking at the damn picture through the view finder, but what I mean is I have an image in my minds eye of what I want that photo to become. More often than not I fall short of my expectations. Usually the reason for this is that I’m following an ideal of something I’ve seen before, where is not important but it’s in my head, whatever the catalyst from the scene in front of me it was to far from that ideal that all the processing in the world was not going to get to where I was trying to go. So I end up experimenting to achieve a satisfactory compromise and I move on. However with this photo I feel I hit the nail on the head. Starting with taking the photo I took several interpretations over a few days, different lighting, including the sky or not and different focal lengths. Apart from the right light the focal length was really important as it needed a long one to compress the curve in path so it stood out, this in turn discounted the sky. So by now you’ve gathered I’m happy with this image, for now, If you have made it to here I would be interested to know if you can spot any influences in this image.

Shortly after draining out from a rock tunnel at Sunday Lake, Planter Creek flows over a small rock ridge to form a small yet sudden drop in a scenic wooded scene. Root Beer Falls is so named because rich brown tannin water creates almost a bubbly froth into the creek’s pool below.

Thank you for your kind views, comments, awards and faves.

Since I really wanted to stay true to my focal length of (35mm) this photo is a bit of a challenge. The angle is anything but simple. After all, no one should have to fall out of the window. lol;)

On Google Maps you can see the location of the building. I had the opportunity to stand on a small barrier block, however this reduces my composition and selection range a lot. When I now look at the exposure time, I am very surprised at my steady hand. Anyway I post it anyway. I find the building just beautiful. The current tenant is the German Parliamentary Society.

The focal point of the LBJ Ranch is the LBJ Ranch House, the home of President Johnson and a center of political activity for more than 20 years. Leaders from around the world visited the Johnsons' here, and during the Johnson Administration it became known as the Texas White House.

The original section of the home (left) was built out of the native limestone fieldstone by a German immigrant, William "Polecat" Meier in 1894. In 1909 the President's aunt and uncle, Frank and Clarence Martin, bought the house and added the main central portion of the home. The Johnson's bought the home from Lyndon's aunt in 1951. The house needed considerable shoring up, and the Johnsons made a number of additions, most notably the master bedrooms and the office wing.

President Johnson was the first President to create a functioning White House away from Washington. In 1972 the Johnsons donated the Texas White House to the National Park Service and the American people. After the President's death in 1973, Mrs. Johnson continued to live at the Ranch part time until her death in 2007.

Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973), also called LBJ, served as the 36th president of the United States from 1963-1969. A moderate Democrat and vigorous majority leader in the United States Senate, Johnson was elected vice president in 1960 and acceded to the presidency in 1963 upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. During his administration he signed into law the Civil Rights Act (1964), the most comprehensive civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction era, initiated major social service programs, and bore the brunt of national opposition to his vast expansion of American involvement in the Vietnam War.

This markets main focal point is the shell of a Lockheed L-1011 Tristar aeroplane. I was impressed with the gigantic peculiar art installations. The place is very easy to navigate, not many boutique shops were open but a lot of reselling clothes and items they no longer need by the aircraft. You will find many affordable unique items. If you are planning a day walk with your family and pets, this is your place. Food and restaurants are within reasonable prices.

No decision should be made on an empty shopping bag!

Schiedam is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. It is part of the Rotterdam metropolitan area. The city is located west of Rotterdam, east of Vlaardingen, and south of Delft. In the south it is connected with the village of Pernis by the Beneluxtunnel.

The city is known for its historical center with canals, and for having the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam is also famous for the distilleries and malthouses and production of jenever (gin) − such as the internationally renowned Ketel One − so much so that in French and English the word schiedam (usually without a capital s-) refers to the town's Holland gin. This was the town's main industry during the early Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century, a dark period to which it owed its former nickname "Zwart Nazareth" or "Black Nazareth". Furthermore, the city is known for Saint Lidwina, one of the most famous Dutch saints (her relics are located in the Liduina Basilica in Schiedam).

It's been almost two weeks since I last posted a picture of my favorite tree. I think I can come up with another one now.

For everyone who sees it for the first time (which can't be many) the tree stands on the small mount Winter in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

When this photo was made, sunrise was still at least 30-45 minutes away. So I experimented a little to find a slightly different variant of the well-known composition.

The result was a shot from a little further away, so that the structure of the rocky ground and this small heather island also get some attention.

A small positive side effect is that by using a larger focal length (53 instead of the usual 35mm), the mountains in the background are moved a little closer and therefore have more effect.

So I can get used to this variant quite well.

There are many about at this time but they quickly become devoured. The Hypomyces fungi are known as mycoparasites, fungi that attack other fungi. The hypomyces fungi love the Bolete in this area. It's like they get covered in white frosting. On the brighter side, this one is still pristine. This was stacked from 6 images due to the focal length of the lens.
