The DRL TEN Pavilion sat for a while on London's Bedford Square. It was developed as part of an Architectural Association competition to celebrate ten years of their Design Research Lab. Simple and elegant in form, it was a canvas for shadow play on sunlit days.

Der zweite am 20. April 2016 auf der Franz-Josefs-Bahn eingesetzte "Puszta Ochse" war die 470 002. Hier schiebt der MAV Taurus den REX 2127 von České Velenice nach Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof und passiert in Kürze den Bahnhof Glaubendorf-Wetzdorf, dessen Bahnsteig man im Hintergrund erkennen kann.
Anekdote am Rande: Rechts von meinem Standort befand sich ein Feld, auf dem der Bauer gerade pflügte. Der Tag war sehr trocken und windig, sodass viel Staub aufgewirbelt wurde. Der Bauer blieb bei mir stehen und fragte, ob mich das beim Fotografieren arg stören würde, er könne auch erst ein anderes Feld pflügen. Ich sagte ihm, dass seine Arbeit natürlich meiner Freizeitaktivität vorginge - irritiert über soviel Freundlichkeit. Sonst sieht man sich ja eher mit wutentbrannten und mistgabelschwingenden Einheimischen konfrontiert, die - meist nachvollziehbar - bereits schlechte Erfahrungen mit "Eisenbahnfreunden" gemacht haben, die rücksichtslos Wiesen platt treten und ihren Müll hinterlassen. Ins Wein- und Waldviertel verirren sich diese Zeitgenossen aber meist nicht, so dass die Welt hier für den ambitionierten Fotografen noch in Ordnung ist.
Zaghaft bricht die Sonne durch den Nebel, als der 4020 294 als S40 21010 (Wien FJB - St. Pölten Hbf) bei Muckendorf-Wipfing die morgendliche Stille durchbricht.
Manchmal läuft nicht immer alles rund: Am 16.09. erlitt die 1144 078 einen Lüfterschaden als sie den REX4 2823 (Krems a. d. Donau - Wien FJB) bespannte und blieb in Fels am Wagram liegen. Um den Zug dennoch an sein Ziel zu bringen wurde kurzerhand die zur Wochenendruhe in Moosbierbaum abgestellte 1116 279 nach Fels überstellt, um den liegengebliebenen Zug abzuschleppen. Mehr durch Zufall konnte ich dabei die Abschleppaktion im Ortsgebiet von Höflein a. d. Donau festhalten, als der Zug mit nur knapp +60 Minuten Verspätung (!) vorbeieilte. Dadurch bot sich auch mal die seltene Gelegenheit hier einen REX lokvoraus zu fotografieren. Währenddessen kann man auf der anderen Donauseite die Stadt Stockerau sowie die sanften Hügel des Weinviertels erkennen.
The North Haven Inn was originally built on the site in 1838. This building was demolished and replaced with the present Haven Hotel in 1887.
From 1898 – 1926, the Haven Hotel was home to the Italian inventor and physicist, Guglielmo Marconi, who built a 120-foot (37 m) wooden transmitter mast in the hotel’s grounds at the hotel in 1898, and another 158-foot (48 m) wireless mast at the back of the hotel. He carried out some of his first wireless telegraphy experiments at the Haven Hotel. Marconi lived at the Haven Hotel until 1926, where he took his meals at a communal table where all guests were invited to eat. Following dinner, there was often a musical interlude with Guglielmo accompanying his guests on the piano.
Other notable guests include Robert Browning, John Major, and the Real Madrid football team in 2014.
During the First World War, the Haven Hotel housed Belgian refugees. Throughout the Second World War, the Haven Hotel was a military contact point and a Naval detachment. In 1976, The Haven Hotel was purchased by the hotel chain FJB Hotels.
In 2017, a planning application was made to demolish the hotel and build a six-storey apartment block on the site, resulting in thousands of letters of objection from members of the public. It was announced in April 2021 that Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole Council would rule on the application in "the coming months". The Haven Hotel was rebuilt in 1926, when the country still ricocheted from the Great War and Britain’s hotel architecture was stagnant, it was hailed a seaside architectural triumph. In fact, one publication announced it was “the only good-class hotel of any size erected of late” and a “successful attempt to combine modern ideas in hotel planning with the latest construction and materials.”
Completed in 10 months, it is said that over 1,000 architectural drawings were produced by hand and that, on average, 162 men were employed per day, for 270,600 man hours. This was an epic undertaking for what was, at the time, a seaside town. Whilst the Haven Hotel visible today has largely stayed true to its original design, there are some quirks that, over the years, have been lost to changing times and trends. For example, the seawater sunken baths, which offered guests a detoxifying soak in the comfort of their own rooms, the chauffeur’s accommodation conveniently located above the parking facilities and a petrol station for guests on the site of today’s Business Centre, and the designated smoking room, which at the time would have been considered the height of fashion.
It took 500,00 bricks, 500 tons of cement, 12,000 cubic feet of timber and 6,000 cubic feet of stonework, the hotel is now considered a fine example of 1920s architecture.
Odd that such a mundane shape can be officially regarded as spotters exotica now, this locally registered example was a neat surprise in a fairly posh area nearby. Unfortunately, we can assume the future is no doubt bleak as its been here since March 2011 with no MOTs since.... odder things have happened so who knows.
Gute Motive an Bahnhöfen zu finden wird von Jahr zu Jahr schwieriger aufgrund von diversen Modernisierungen und Umbauten. Eine positive Ausnahme bilden da die beiden Kritzendorfer S-Bahnhalte an der FJB. Einwandfrei in Schuss gehaltene Wartehäuschen/Aufnahmegebäude sowie ein fotogenes Umfeld bilden einen guten fotografischen Rahmen.
Widmen wir uns zu erst der Haltestelle Unterkritzendorf. Dort wurde das Wartehäuschen auf dem Bahnsteiggleis Richtung Wien erst kürzlich saniert und präsentiert sich im top gepflegten Zustand. Generell macht die Haltestelle einen eher idyllischen Eindruck, liegt sie doch zwischen Ortsrand und dem Auwald der Donau.
Komplettiert wird das Bild vom 4024 138, welcher als Lp nach Wien FJBf unterwegs war. Der Triebwagen hätte wohl eigentlich als S40 21035 (St. Pölten Hbf - Wien FJBf) fahren sollen, aber die fiel ersatzlos aus. Vielleicht gab es auch schon einen Läusebefall im Zug oder war es dann doch nur ein technisch Defekt? ;)
Aktueller "Starzug" auf der FJB ist der REX 2110 von Wien FJB nach Gmünd NÖ, der aus fünf Wagen des Fernverkehrs gebildet wird. Der Zug trägt den Namen "Waldviertel-Bote" und wird planmäßig mit einer 1144 befördert. Oft kommt allerdings auch eine Lok der Baureihe 1142 zum Einsatz. Ich konnte allerdings noch keine vor dem Zug sichten, auch nicht am 28. Mai 2015, als ich den Zug kurz vor Pürbach-Schrems mit der 1144.062 aufnahm.
A pochi metri di distanza dal Danubio un treno della S40 Wien FJB - Tulln Stadt effettua fermata a Greifenstein-Altenberg. La serie 4020 è l’unica di cui diverse composizioni portano ancora la vecchia livrea ÖBB blu e bianca.
Wenige Meter von der Donau entfernt macht ein Zug der S40 Wien FJB - Tulln Stadt in Greifenstein-Altenberg Halt. Die Baureihe 4020 ist die einzige, von der mehrere Kompositionen noch die alte blau-weisse Lackierung der ÖBB tragen.
Diesellocomotief 2143.047-5 van de Oostenrijkse spoorwegen (ÖBB) is met een Regionalzug onderweg van Wien FJB naar Gmünd (NÖ) en passeert Hirschbach tussen Vitis en Gmünd (NÖ).

Bei Greifenstein-Altenberg legt sich die 1144 125 mit ihrem REX4 2838 in die Kurve und steuert auf den nächsten Planhalt Tulln an der Donau zu.
Am 18.1.24 fährt 1144 283 als Rex4 9568 von Wien nach Krems. Hier zwischen Lagenlebarn und muckendorf-wipfing

I picture it like this. One of them has been running around breaking trees and making art out of them. At one point he stumbles across one of those blue tarps with grommets in them and so he's running away to stuff it in a secret place so he can use it for something later.
