City of Cape Town, please remove this prehistoric warning sign! It hasn't worked for years and seems really out of place with the new IRT system.
The figure frame for AVA is complete - Ex Machina - 1:12 scale. Now sculpting can begin by adding detail from head to toe as the sculpt with represent the body suit Alicia Vikander wore during the production (step one). I attached articulated feet to the figure which I can begin sculpting over. I have also sculpted over (blocked out) the lower abdominal articulation This will be brought back later in the build as I become more aware of the articulation points I can add when the internal machinery is made. #exmachina #meetava #ava #A24 #sith_fire30

Sculpt progress on Ava - 1:12 scale. Ex Machina. Sculpted the ears!! smile emoticon Did a little more shaping of the machine skull. I'll begin detailing it tonight. I am considering on creating the clear mesh dome the same way I did with the Alien- through vacuum forming. Need to get some mold material. If this works I may repeat the same process with all the machine exposed parts. #exmachina #ava #aliciavikander #A24 #sith_fire30

My apologies for taking so long to complete this piece...as with all my work, I never center my full attention on just one project, always a bit at a time, tabling and returning to the subject when the inspiration hits.
This is a 1:18th scale figure - fully articulated with all the basic movements and can be posed in many postions like other factory made figures...mostly when his cowl is removed.
Both figures sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt and painted using Floyquil Acrylics.

Sculpt/Build update of the "Crabwalking" Alien - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. This figure is inspired by a deleted scene for the 1979 Sir Ridley Scott film - ALIEN. You'll understand the figure more if you take a moment to check out the deleted scene - youtu.be/eR5jYeIMBKk
Finished the build yesterday. The final figure has better articulation than originally expected. I can actually pose the figure from a "crawl" to a "rising" position which is a plus since I originally conceived the idea of the figure being a static posed piece. An unpainted resin piece, using revoltech joints in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, upper legs, knees and ankles. The tail is held by a magnet, is static (hard plastic) and comes in three positions: curled, unfurling and straight. #alien #nostromo #deletedscene #lambert #crabwalking #giger #creepy #figure #art #sculpt
The first of two semi-static posed figures of the creature from the 1979 film, Alien. Hand sculpted, hand painted. This version depicts the beast as it would have appeared in several promotional test shots during pre-production, the air duct scene where Captain Dallas met his end as well as a deleted scene appearing within the corridor while Parker and Lambert were making their desperate escape.
Figure is approx. 3" high from highest point on head to the feet. Articulated neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists. Vacuum formed PETG dome is removable.
Original was sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two part epoxy. Parts were cast in resin and assembled to build this version. Used Model Masters Polly Scale and Tamiya acrylics.

Additional images on my workup of AVA's frame - Ex Machina - 1:12 scale. First some "likeness tests" as I like to call them - it's a helpful tool to overlay images of the subject I am sculpting (in this case, Alicia Vikander) to make sure proportions are correct. It doesn't always help with the shapes as much as it has to do with spacing of the eyed, ears and mouth. Additional image are of the head and body frame as both have been modified. The body has been reduced once again to make way for the sculpt work. I plan on sculpting the actress as she appears on set in her bodysuit....then on the backend, separate the parts and begin construction the skeletal parts as well as the transparent dome, arms, legs and torso. For now I am working on a few other projects in the 1:18 scale. #ava #meetava #exmachina #sithfire30 #AliciaVikander

Nostromo Build Update - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Update to the Ladderwell and Ladder. So I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for the ladderwell build. I'm having to clean up seam lines, block in interiors all before molding and casting the piece. Last night I began building the ladder itself and what I thought was going to become an arduous task actually turned out quite simple. Just fused two pieces of sheet styrene together, plotted cut lines and with the help of my dremel tool, and xacto blade and sandpaper I have a pretty sturdy ladder which holds the custom figures quite well. Next up, the floor and my first ceiling build! #alien #nostromo #ladderwell #diorama #ripley #starship #scratchbuilding #styrene
These helmets from the Kubrick series will work perfectly - i will need to modify them and add additional detailing of course but things like this save me a LOAD of time...so by now you can guess I'll be working on the derelict explorer team...http://youtu.be/rf99ouvFBJ
My 1:18 scale, 4.5" tall Furlag sculpt is complete. The head is a completly original sculpt. The figures body is also original and is sculpted over a custom created, articluated frame. I used Aves FIXIT for the sculpt and casted the head in plastic. Furlag has 14 points of articulation. Hand painted using Testors Polyscale (Floquil) acrylic paints. A very unique species in the Star Wars universe...
From Wookipedia - "Furlag was a small-time bounty hunter with large, batlike ears. Operating during the height of the Galactic Empire, he was not well-known, but often worked with other prominent bounty hunters, such as Zuckuss and 4-LOM. He, Zuckuss, and 4-LOM were subcontracted by fellow hunter Skorr on Ord Mantell during the early Galactic Civil War in the hunt for a group of prospective Rebels, then again later with 4-LOM and Zuckuss as well as several other bounty hunters including the Trandoshan Bossk to attempt to pry Han Solo's carbonite-encased body from Boba Fett."
Unfortunately Furlag underestimated Boba Fett and met his end being sucked through and open airlock shaft into deep space.
Build update on the Narcissus Shuttle diorama - ALIEN - 1:18 scale. Completed the second storage compartment door and finished building the section itself.
Details haven't been added yet but both doors are functional and close very convincingly with magnets. A solid "TAP" sound to let you know it's shut - may sound silly but it's the sound of "success" to me being my first time building working doors at this scale from scratch.
It's turning out to be a very large diorama piece, and I havent even begun working on the forward sections of the ship which includes the pilot stations and that beautiful forward canopy. Everything is smooshed together a bit to fit onto my sketch board which measures around 22" x 25" so you can get the idea of scale. It's modular, so I can break it down to be manageable.
I'd like to get the frame build up for aft section (airlock door and overhead) before getting back to some figure creation and paint work. "Small moves Ellie, small moves"....a little at a time and look how it amounts up after a go or two! I'm in no rush.

Much more detail to the head this week - also worked on the upper arms. I feel the detail is going to be enormous with this figure once completed...and with a full range of articulation? Awesome! I'm looking forward to beginning the chest cavity.
However, many revisions need to take place before I am satisfied but I feel I am heading in the right direction. All Hail FIXIT SCULPT! I couldn't do this type of detail at this scale without it!
I hope these early images show you how much effort goes into creating these figures - probably the most difficult part of building one of these is the early stages, creating a working armature that will allow the articulation I want as well as support the sculpt work I intend to apply.
I have completed the sculpt to this version of Starkiller from The Force Unleashed 2 - Arena Combat Gear. Next the figure will be primed then painted. Figure is in 1:18 scale sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt - a two part epoxy. Also includes casted materials and fabric.
Sculpt progress on the Space Jockey - ALIEN (1979) 1:18 scale.
Sculpt material used is Aves FIXIT Sculpt from Aves Clay.
My first progress post of 2021! Took a month to get here but better late than never! Sorry for the delays but I've been wrestling with that ol' uninspired feeling as of late and I know other artists have been going through it as well. The best medicine is to battle through it till that spark becomes a raging fire again and that's what exactly what I'm doing!
So I've started on the upper back detail which I've had to move slowly with because visuals offered isn't as detailed as I would have liked so it took me some time to get the right reference material which I luckily found. Now I feel I'm heading in the right direction.
I'll let the photos do the talking. You'll see that I'm doing one half, middle and then the remaining half instead of just working the whole area. Helps with keeping perspective and is easier to make adjustments to if I royally screw things up.
Hope you enjoy the updated pics! More to come now that I'm getting things back on track. More projects will also find their way to the table for updates. Thanks for your continued support and interest in my work!

Please give constructive feedback on what I could have done better (when shooting). l will try to go back to the place once the trees are fully leafy, which should correct some issues.

Sculpt/Mold update on sleeping crew members Ripley and Lambert. Nostromo/Narcissus - ALIEN79 - 1:18 scale.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
Preparing the first few completed sculpts of Ripley and Lambert for molds. From these, I will make final resin casts as well as alternate versions of the topless female crew with the tape band across the chest. No worries to those that thought I sculpted over the original sleeping Ripley...safe and sound.
One thing I have found helpful when making a mold of an object containing detail such as these is to hand brush a thin layer of mold material directly to the forms before pouring...which is why I purchase the SLOW curing versions of the mold material. This ensures air will not be trapped during the pour.
More to come! #alien #moldmaking #customactionfigure #nostromo #narcissus #ripley #lambert #smoothon #sculpture #miniatures

Sculpt update on "Sleeping Ripley" and Jonesy the Cat - ALIEN 79 - Nostromo 1:18 scale.
I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to work on this piece last week but from what progress I've made, I'm hoping that I can complete both sleeping versions of Ripley - one for the Nostromo Sleep Chamber and the other for the Narcissus by the end of the weekend.
For this update, I've attached the upper arms/shoulders to the torso, as well as sculpted the boxers each crew member wears while in their pod. Next step will be the lower arms, sculpting the hands, then fitting the figure properly into the pod. No progress yet on the Narcissus version but that will change after tonight's session.
May sound a little silly seeing that many consider these current projects as "customs" ...but I've treated these static sculpt projects as if they were classical studies. I'm usually sculpting monsters or alien bodies so sculpting the human form is a real treat. Especially the female form which I consider a challenge.
...and Jonesy the cat. I completed the sculpt of him in a sitting pose a couple years back. Next will be a standing pose featuring a ball jointed neck and a sleeping version of Jonesy all curled up that will fit in both sleep chambers along with Ripley! I plan to do one additional variant of Jonesy hissing!!
Quick update I know - more to come, promise. Had some fun with the camera this time around on some of the shot. Just found them interesting. #alien #ripley #jonesthecat #jonesy #nostromo #alien79 #sigourneyweaver #sleepchamber #humanform #sculpting #art
