"Dressing a Sculpt" is a term I use for taking high quality shots of a sculpt while it's still a work in progress to evaluate proportion and sculpt errors (if any). I find this beneficial because I sculpt the figure in portions - head, upper torso, lower abdomen, upper arms etc...all separate, never as one piece.
I use pins or bits of Monster Clay (wax based) to bring the parts together and pose in both a neutral stance and when I can, action poses. Sometimes the parts are too cumbersome to pose dynamically. I may throw in some color and shadow to see if I'm capturing the "feel" of the subject at hand. How it's interpreted in the comic book or film it's inspired from.
So here are several "dressed" images of the Egg Layer Xenomorph from the Dark Horse Comics series Aliens: Defiance. Posed this guy next door to my Alien Newborn who is sharing the same pedestal at the moment. Took a couple shots of her as well for the heck of it.
Hope you enjoy! More to come! #alien #aliens #darkhorsecomics #defiance #xenomorph #horror #sciencefiction #spacehorror #monsters #customactionfigures #sculpture #miniatures #avesstudio #fixitsculpt #hive #aliensdefiance #art

Here are some shots with Jennir's Bearded head sculpt - a seperate cowl piece was sculpted and fit to give the appearance that hood was lowered around the shoulders. The hat has a clear band that goes around the neck under this seperate piece which hides it. Then the head is attached.

Sculpt update on The Queen - Aliens (86) - and the Egg Morpher - Aliens: Defiance - Dark Horse Comics. Both 1:18 scale.
The Queen
Completed the rough sculpt of the lower mandible and teeth. The lower mandible is a skeletal sculpt for the moment while I adjust and refine the teeth. After the lower teeth are complete, flesh detail will be added to the mandible.
The teeth are being sculpted on a separate pallet, so when completed can have a mold made and cast in clear resin. The teeth are individually sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, a two-part epoxy from Aves Studio LLC. Once cured, I've begun refining each using dental tools and fine-grit sandpaper. Hope to have them at a full shine similar to the top set of teeth soon.
I still have to sculpt the gum line for the lower teeth and the pallet will eventually be set deeper into the lower mandible than what you see here. Many adjustments will be made after castings are made. Then additional casts will be made.
Do the top and bottom teeth line up? Close but not really - not too concerned with that since my sculpt will feature multiple head sculpts and not a jointed jaw. So perfect alignment isn't a priority here...although I will do my best to get it as close as possible before making molds.
The Egg Morpher
Began filling the detail to the back "pipes" of the beast. I've also begun the sculpt of the creature's hands which will be very similar to the Giger Alien hands but larger. The rough sculpt right now resemble Bugs Bunny gloves and not that of the nightmarish xenomorph but no worries, that will all change....just how I work.
Hope you enjoyed the updates!!! Trying to get an update knocked out each week. If not, every other week for sure with updates in between.

Additional images on my workup of AVA's frame - Ex Machina - 1:12 scale. First some "likeness tests" as I like to call them - it's a helpful tool to overlay images of the subject I am sculpting (in this case, Alicia Vikander) to make sure proportions are correct. It doesn't always help with the shapes as much as it has to do with spacing of the eyed, ears and mouth. Additional image are of the head and body frame as both have been modified. The body has been reduced once again to make way for the sculpt work. I plan on sculpting the actress as she appears on set in her bodysuit....then on the backend, separate the parts and begin construction the skeletal parts as well as the transparent dome, arms, legs and torso. For now I am working on a few other projects in the 1:18 scale. #ava #meetava #exmachina #sithfire30 #AliciaVikander

Sculpt update on H.R. Giger's Space Jockey - 1:18 scale, ALIEN (1979).
Sculpt using Aves FIXIT Sculpt - a two-part epoxy. Find out more about this material at Aves Clay
In my last update, I spoke of how I needed to strip away a portion of my sculpt to make more room in the back of the Space Jockey for additional detail. I think my last video update showed the area I "dremeled" away.
For this update, I have successfully sculpted the portions that were previously removed, adding more detail than before and this time bringing the sculpt further out, making room for the new detail that has also begun to take residence in the back of the sculpture. Two tubes have been added as well as a build-out between the two where the next set up tubes will go. This offset is accurate to the production photos I have studied from the set.
Next step is to sculpt the backpack behind the head, neck and shoulders. An enormous amount of biomechanical detail in this area alone so it should be fun! Just waiting on my latest FIXIT order from Aves Studio which should be here sometime this week.
Sorry for the absence of updates over the past month. Life turned the volume up a bit and I had to step away from the workbench to turn it back down. Nothing serious, which I'm thankful for. Speaking of being thankful, I hope all my American friends had a great Thanksgiving!
Thanks for all the continued interest! Hoping you all are staying safe and healthy. More updates to come! ❤

Sculpt progress on the Space Jockey - 1:18 scale - ALIEN. Creating framework for the arms to be sculpted over later. This helps with keeping things in even perspective plus it allows me more stability to use the FIXIT shorlty after mixing instead of waiting an hour for it to become more manageable. Sculpt progress on the Egg Layer Xenomorph. Aliens: Defiance (Dark Horse Comics). 1:18 scale.
Been a crazy couple weeks with the Holidays ramping up and office work to be completed...but things are slowly getting back to normal and I finally had some time to complete one of the hands to the Egglayer Xenomorph.
I haven't sculpted many hands so it's a fun challenge and allows me to accumulate some teachable moments through trial and error. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger right?
Elongated fingers are creepy so I may have slightly drifted from the comic reference material a tad but I think it will add to the finished figure. Sculpted using Aves FIXIT sculpt, I have included a before and after shot for those interested, as well as a scale shot for the curious.
I will sculpt the second hand in the same dynamic fashion along with a neutral set of hands similar to the smaller Big Chap I did a few years back.
May be my last update for the new year? Not sure. Anyway, thank you all for your continued support! I hope to bring much more to the custom hobby next year. 2019 was a struggle to get things moving but I battled through it.
I hope all of you are enjoying holiday festivities and have a wonderful New Year 2020!!!!

Build status on The Autodoc - Medical station on the Nostromo. ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Sorry for the delay in updates. Celebration was this past weekend and it wore me out! Created a counter balance within the tube that gives the table Plus the build had a minor setback that needed some serious TLC to improve the function of the revolving table as well as being able to accept detailing more accurately.
Simple images, nothing mind blowing. As the detail builds and expands, the pieces will be all more interesting. Created a counter balance within the tube that gives the bed a little give...like it's floating... instead of it being a solid structure. Hard to explain...you have to be here. LOL! Next step will be the monitors above the bed. Hope to have some of that completed by the end of the weekend.

Build update on the Narcissus Shuttle diorama - ALIEN - 1:18 scale. Completed the second storage compartment door and finished building the section itself.
Details haven't been added yet but both doors are functional and close very convincingly with magnets. A solid "TAP" sound to let you know it's shut - may sound silly but it's the sound of "success" to me being my first time building working doors at this scale from scratch.
It's turning out to be a very large diorama piece, and I havent even begun working on the forward sections of the ship which includes the pilot stations and that beautiful forward canopy. Everything is smooshed together a bit to fit onto my sketch board which measures around 22" x 25" so you can get the idea of scale. It's modular, so I can break it down to be manageable.
I'd like to get the frame build up for aft section (airlock door and overhead) before getting back to some figure creation and paint work. "Small moves Ellie, small moves"....a little at a time and look how it amounts up after a go or two! I'm in no rush.

Some additional details added to the head sculpt of AVA - Ex Machina - 1:12 scale. Build status of the "Crabwalker" Alien - ALIEN 79 - 1:18 scale. Here's a shot of most of the components that will go into creating the crab walking version of the beast (all but the head and tail). The figure will be mildly articulated. The torso will be in a fixed, crunched position. Ball joint for the head and shoulders, joints for the elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles and a swivel for the tail which will be posed both in curved and rolled out positions. Seems a lot but the articulation will not be able to support a full standing pose nor would it look natural with the figure standing upright. I simply don't have the machinery and supplies available to create a figure made from various materials (soft and hard plastics) to offer free moving, max articulation as companies such as NECA has with their Big Chap figure. I think of this piece as more on the lines of a McFarlance figure...plenty or articulation points, but no way of using them in any effective matter other slightly adjusting the pose it's fixed in LOL! Just messin' with ya McFarlane - I still love ya. smile emoticon #alien #nostromo #sculpting #figurebuilding
Sculpt status on the 1:18 scale Space Jockey - Alien 79. Pre-sculpt work in progress using monster clay to get a better idea of placement and proportion. A "suggested" sculpt to say the least. I was hesitant on where to start with the Space Jockey - do I start with the alien itself or the chair? Then I went back through my refference shots and found that Giger and Peter Voysey began the sculpt of the Alien first, then built the chair around it. So that's what I have begun doing. I will reduce the monster clay which will work as a frame for the final sculpt that will be made using Aves FIXIT Sculpt (Epoxy). Very excited to finally see it come into form! Gonna be big! #alien #spacejockey #hrgiger #diorama #sculpture
I'm building an A.I.,.....AVA in her infancy. Ex Machina - 1:12 scale work in progress. Still rough around the edges while I focus in on Alicia Vikander's likeness. The body needs to be thinned out more. She needs new feet to be sculpted with articulation. Ears and the skull will be sculpted/defined more....then it will get tricky. More to come on this project.....#ava #meetava #exmachina #sith_fire30 #turingtest

Sculpt update on "Sleeping Ripley" and Jonesy the Cat - ALIEN 79 - Nostromo 1:18 scale.
I haven't had as much time as I would have liked to work on this piece last week but from what progress I've made, I'm hoping that I can complete both sleeping versions of Ripley - one for the Nostromo Sleep Chamber and the other for the Narcissus by the end of the weekend.
For this update, I've attached the upper arms/shoulders to the torso, as well as sculpted the boxers each crew member wears while in their pod. Next step will be the lower arms, sculpting the hands, then fitting the figure properly into the pod. No progress yet on the Narcissus version but that will change after tonight's session.
May sound a little silly seeing that many consider these current projects as "customs" ...but I've treated these static sculpt projects as if they were classical studies. I'm usually sculpting monsters or alien bodies so sculpting the human form is a real treat. Especially the female form which I consider a challenge.
...and Jonesy the cat. I completed the sculpt of him in a sitting pose a couple years back. Next will be a standing pose featuring a ball jointed neck and a sleeping version of Jonesy all curled up that will fit in both sleep chambers along with Ripley! I plan to do one additional variant of Jonesy hissing!!
Quick update I know - more to come, promise. Had some fun with the camera this time around on some of the shot. Just found them interesting. #alien #ripley #jonesthecat #jonesy #nostromo #alien79 #sigourneyweaver #sleepchamber #humanform #sculpting #art

WIT: A ton of patience, a step ladder, my G12 (since it has a swivel screen) and a screwdriver. Queue self timer, a mad dash, a climb, and strategic placement until I got a shot I liked. I had a difficult time with the focus on this one and read up on hyperfocal distances. The basics I got were to focus in front of "infinity" and you'll have more in focus in the foreground. Any input or advice in this area would be GREATLY appreciated! I ended up straightening the shot in PSE (it's still a touch crooked to me), sharpening, cropping and increasing contrast.

Sculpt update on various projects...
- 1:18 scale Newborn from Alien: Resurrection
- 1:18 scale Egg Layer Xenomorph from Aliens: Defiance
- 1:18 scale "The Beast" from ALIEN (79)
and a couple more images from the 1:18 scale Sleep Chamber (NOSTROMO) project.
For the Newborn and the Egg Layer Xenomorph, it's all about hands. I've created the frames for the hands I will be sculpting this week. For the Egg Layer Xeno, I want to sculpt a "neutral" hand which is nothing more than an enlarged version of the original ALIEN 79 hand so that will be fun.
For the ALIEN 79 "Beast"...I am happy with what I have done with the figure but I see where improvements can be made. The head sculpt has never been 100% for me...and I think with a little tweaking I can get it there. I'm also thickening the lower abdomen sculpt as its proportion to the upper rib cage is a tad overblown. I'll post a separate update to explain all that later.
Finally, I wanted to shoot a couple more images of Parker from the Sleep Chamber build just to get a couple more shots of that hand before I sculpt over it with another one. LOL!..and I shot another image of Ripley because it was just there. LOL! This was the shot Ridley wanted but the production company thought nudity (although logical in this circumstance) would limit the number of people that would see the film so he chose the alternative (the ridiculous bands across the chest) that didn't see the light of day anyway! LOL!
OK! See? I'm still kickin' out updates! LOL! I hope you all are safe and doing as well as you can with the current state of things. Hope my little updates can break up some of the monotony out there.
Thanks for looking! More to come!

Sculpt progress on the Space Jockey - 1:18 scale - ALIEN. I think,...well, I'm sure I'm close to having the head finished....Finally LOL! I keep going back to make adjustments but it's gotta be right or everything else will just look wrong. I have a little more adjustments and age to add onto the piece before moving to the body. The area around the neck and shoulders will be difficult as I don't have many images to go by showing detail..I plan on sculpting the body this week, along with starting some other sculpt projects. Don't want to burn out on this guy too quickly. Sculpt material is Aves FIXIT. Included another scale shot sporting the Nostromo explorers as well as my little custom cameo smile emoticon #alien #nostromo #spacejockey #derelict #hrgiger #giger #biomechanical #sculpture #avesfixitsculpt
