Bad user interface design could be everywhere, even on a gas pump. What should you press to select your preferred gas?

A lot of users pressed the big yellow sign. Did they get their choice? No. We can easily see (Traces: around the 87, the yellow sign is cleaner and a small region is even erased) that several users thought the yellow sign was a button, but it wasn’t.

(Former World Gas Station). To the left of the gas station is a supermarket parking lot sign for Buy Low Warehouse Supermarkets. An independent Supermarket chain. Buy Low replaced another independent chain, and

prior to that it was a Max Foods, which this site was divested by Albertsons after it taken over of Lucky Supermarkets. Prior to that???

Updated note on 02/13/2010: In the Los Angeles Times over the last year, there has been several articles about the giant oil companies and how they are either getting rid of their retail operations or selling them off to another party.

Chevron (Chevron Texaxo), Mobil (Exxon Mobile) and Union 76 (76 Conoco Phillips) are three giants that come to mind. Some of things that I have read were Conoco Phillips has sold their retail operations to a thrid party, and Chevron is exitng certain markets.

Finally, Exxon Mobil was down sizing and exiting markets, but it was not clear where or which brands.

In Southern California, several years ago, prior to the EXXON Mobil merger, Mobil was the major player and EXXON had just re-enteered the Southern California market by taking over WORLD Gasoline Stations. All the original EXXON full service Gasoline Stations had been closed for several years and rebranded or closed by EXXON upon leaving the Southern California market.

That is probably the reason why there are two tiers of types of stations run by EXXON Mobil around here, Mobil regular full/self serve auto repair/convenience store Gasolind Stations and Exxon has mini marts or self serve Gas Stations, no full service EXXONS or ones with auto repair.

“Investigate Exxon.

Recent reports have shown that Exxon knew about the threat of climate change decades ago. Yet over the course of nearly forty years, the company has contributed millions of dollars to think tanks and politicians that have done their best to spread doubt and misinformation — first on the existence of climate change, then the extent of the problem, and now its cause. If Exxon intentionally misled the public about climate change and fossil fuels, then they should be held accountable. We’re calling for an immediate investigation.”

At the I-40 and Canada Rd. interchange in Lakeland TN we have this old Exxon/TCBY/Subway megaplex. This is also very near the somewhat lengthy connector road leading to the belly-up Lakeland Factory Outlet Mall: flic.kr/s/aHsjHS1LBc Surprisingly, this is showing a 1996 build date. I would of thought it was much older, but the 1981 aerial view shows a different structure here on this land. Hard to tell for sure, but it looks like maybe a small restaurant of some sort back then.

Station was located in the 1200 block of West Tucumcari Blvd. (Route 66) on the city's west side just east of the US 66-54 junction and next door to the former Ramada Inn, now the Tristar Inn Express.

Exxon station design changed very little in initial conversion from Enco in 1972, aside from new Exxon signs. Exxon Unleaded gasoline added at virtually all stations nationwide with red and white square ID around mid-1974 in time for 1975-model cars with catalytic converters requiring lead-free fuel. In certain markets were low-lead Exxon Plus was marketed as a mid-grade between Exxon Regular and Exxon Extra, Unleaded completely subplannted Plus, and at some smaller stations that had only two pumps and investment in a third tank and pump was not economically feasible, Unleaded replaced Extra altogether.

Here's what the now-vacant station looks like as of May, 2009: farm4.static.flickr.com/3593/3499452670_9f2c48c8e1_b.jpg

Original photo was used as template to re-creation 1970's-like image.

The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in the Prince William Sound (AK) on March 24, 1989.

The Exxon Valdez tanker spilled an estimated 10.8 million gallons of Prudhoe Bay crude oil into the sea, and the oil eventually covered 1,300 square miles of ocean.

Because Prince William Sound contained many rocky coves where the oil collected, the decision was made to displace it with high-pressure hot water (see image above).

However, this also displaced and destroyed the shoreline's microbial populations; many of these organisms like plankton are the basis of the coastal marine food chain, and others like certain bacteria and fungi are capable of facilitating the biodegradation of oil.

However, in 1989, both scientific advice and public pressure were to clean everything.

Since then, a greater understanding of natural and facilitated remediation processes has developed.

Despite the extensive cleanup attempts in and along Prince William Sound, a NOAA study determined that as of early 2007 more than 26,000 gallons of oil remained in the contaminated shoreline's sandy soil, declining at a rate of about 4% per year.

Image above was scanned from a July 1989 film photo, with minor Photoshop effects.
