My old 1984 Alembic Series II "Exploiter" bass. The neck/headstock joint and of course the height-adjustable nut can be seen in profile.
I had this bass built in the summer of 1984. The only options (besides the walnut/maple/purple heart construction) were graphite rods in the neck and a neck shaped like a Rickenbacker 4001 that I'd been very comfortable playing. This is still the most musical bass I've ever owned, but it also weighs so much that it's seen relatively little use.
World No Tobacco Day 2020 : Protecting children and young people from exploitation by the tobacco and related industry.
trinitycarefoundationindia.blogspot.com/2020/05/world-no-... Each year tobacco use kills about one million Indians:
-> Smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke kill about 926,000 people each year.
-> Smokeless tobacco use kills an additional 200,000 people in India each year, accounting for 74% of the global burden of smokeless tobacco.
-> Bidi and cigarette smokers die 6 to 10 years earlier than their non-smoking counterparts.
-> If current trends continue tobacco will account for 13% of all deaths by 2020.

A chilling story of resource exploitation and destruction is beginning to come to light on Easter Island. The first westerners to discover the island wondered how any one could have survived on such a desolate, treeless place. Indeed, this was a mystery until recent core samples taken from the crater lakes showed that the island was heavily forested with a giant extinct palm while the Easter Island culture was active.
Apparently, the islanders were greeted with a lush tropical paradise when they first discovered it. It must have seemed inexhaustible. The trees were cut for lumber for housing, wood for fires, and eventually for the rollers and lever-like devices used to move and erect the Moai.
As the deforestation continued the Moai building competition turned into an obsession. The quarry was producing Moai at sizes that probably could never have been moved very far ( one unfinished Moai in the quarry is 70 feet tall!) And still the trees came down. With the loss of the forests, the land began to erode. The small amount of topsoil quickly washed into the sea. The crops began to fail and the clans turned on one another in a battle for the scarce resources. The symbols of the islanders' power and success, the Moai, were toppled.
Eyes were smashed out of the moai and often rocks were placed where the statues neck would fall so it would decapitate the Moai. The violence grew worse and worse. It was said that the victors would eat their dead enemies to gain strength. Bones found on the island show evidence of this cannibalism. With the scare food supplies it may have been a question of hunger as well as being ceremonial.
The Easter Islanders were more cutoff from the world then ever before. Any dreams of escaping the destroyed island were dashed by the lack of wood.
The only boats they could build were small rafts and canoes made of tortoro reeds. Even fishing must have become extremely difficult at this point. The island was a wasteland, the eroded soils just barely producing enough food for the meager population to survive. It was under these conditions that the Birdman Cult arose.
The missionaries arrived on Easter when the people were at their most vulnerable. With their society in ruin it did not take long to convert the population to Christianity. First to go was the islanders style of dress, or lack of. Tattooing and use of body paint was banned. Destruction of Rapa Nui artworks, buildings, and sacred objects, including most of the Rongo Rongo Tablets - the key to understanding their history - was swift and complete. Islanders where forced off their ancestral lands and required to live in one small section of the island while the rest of the land was used for ranching.

MSIE allows some "cross site scripting" (XSS) which is normally unallowed remote code execution.
Here is a screenshot of my Profile page as viewed in MSIE before the admins fixed this issue (only worked in MSIE, maybe Opera, but not Firefox)
This was done by embedding another style sheet, "hidden" in an image
tag. The external stylesheet used only text and div styles with no use
of image except for the Flickr logo. Ok, it's rather ugly, but I was more on the "proof of concept" than on a design contest :)
I've explained the whole trick on my blog : Cross Site Scripting, Skinning Flickr with MSIE

IT WAS A FUN APRIL 1ST at the SAINT STUPID DAY'S PARADE in SAN FRANCISCO. There is no other event in the world where folks gather to HAVE FUN and poke fun at the embedded horrid capitalist exploitation of the world.
Everyone came in costume...ADDA came as a REPUBLICAN BURNING IN HELL (which we all know in our deepest of hearts is where all REPUBLICANS and RIGHT WING A-0's will end up) ! i shouted MERRY CHRISTMAS to all the business people in the Financial District who stopped and stared in utter confusion.
Everyone gathered at the EMBARCADERO then proceeded to the WORKERS STATUE. There in honor of CLOWNS WITHOUT BOARDERS they put a 'red clown nose' on one of the statues! ADDA DADA got the crowd cheering 'HERO' for the guy who put the nose on the statue.
then to the PACIFIC STOCK EXCHANGE for the wonderful spoof...SOCK EXCHANGE...everyone exchanged socks & then tossed them in the air! One of ADDA DADA's Christmas SANTAs socks were found and declared a SAINT STUPID HOLY RELIC! (you so know i loved that)
Onward we went to the BANKER's HEART...the big, black marble rock in front of BANK OF AMERICA...where everyone tossed their loose pennies at the banker's black greedy heart! (This is just like the muslims in Mecca who toss rocks at the black stone which represents the devil..)
There was tons of good fun, great signs, good vibes, political statements, and incredible costumes

Turning the tables on and protesting against the use of animals in cosmetic experiments...
Dr.Katz, has placed Shelly in a metal vice, her face and torso is scarred by burns from the chemicals housed in the cannisters on the right.
An electrode has been placed in her brain and can be seen on the outside of her head.
Blood from countless experiments seeps through the cracks in the paintwork.
Dr. Katz's work is observed by a rat, ladybird and a spider-cow.
A human skull lies discarded in the left corner of the room, it glows in the dark due to the radiation, it was subjected to when once a living being.
The work is housed in an MDF box.
The vice is made out of a rescued piece of metal and ceramic work, thrown away by one of my college classmates.
The ladybird and spider-cow (possibily a cake-decoration) were found in the street!
The ceramic cat I used for this piece, was found in the garden of an empty house, and as it had childhood memories for me, was quickly pocketed, taken home, cleaned up and kept safe until I could think of something to use it for.
The ceramic cat, was once part of a kitsch glass bowl ornament, (My Great-Uncle had one of these, which as a child I loved; the bowl was red and had a little ceramic mouse inside, which looked up at 2 ceramic cats, which were perched on either side of the exterior of the bowl -looking in at it.)

I 'd like to express my gratitude to all of you who've been following my photographic exploits over the last few years on Flickr. As many of you know, I haven't really made my work available outside of this Flickr site or on my Arts Favebook page (www.facebook.com/davemckanearts).
With this in mind I've decided to offer an image of Dublin Castle in Ireland I shot recently as a High Res image. Seeing as how I'm in the bottom right hand corner of the shot I thought it was an appropriate one to use :-)
The resolution is high enough to print on gloss inkjet paper at a little over 12 inches wide.
Please feel free to download it and print out if you wish. I hope the next year is the best one you've ever had!
In response to safeguarding concerns identified by our Rochdale organised crime team, we’ve executed eight warrants this morning and locked up six suspected gang members.
We identified a teenage boy who was being exploited and coerced into drug dealing by a suspected local gang.
With immediate safeguarding measures put in place, we were able to pursue those responsible
As the investigation developed, we identified further victims, including a vulnerable adult whose house was being cuckooed and used as a stash house for the gang.
This morning, we’ve arrested six men aged 18 - 26 on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class A and B drugs and modern slavery offences.
£30,000 cash has been seized along with cannabis and drugs paraphernalia.
Today’s activity is a key example of partnership work and effective information sharing. It’s enabled us to identify crucial members of a suspected organised crime group, but most importantly, we’ve been able to safeguard several children and vulnerable adults.
Sergeant Mark Lutkevitch from our Rochdale Challenger team said: “Exploitation, coercion, and violence are the foundations of modern slavery and drugs trafficking, and gangs will often exploit the vulnerable to further their profits. Our arrests this morning are part of a longstanding investigation into several organised crime groups operating across Rochdale that we strongly believe are involved in the exploitation of young people.
“Young people and vulnerable adults will be threatened as the criminals exert control, which is why tackling exploitation is a high priority for us. We have specialist officers working with young people in our communities to tackle the vicious cycle of gang recruitment, and teams of officers on the frontline pursuing offenders.
“Our communities are key in helping us be one step ahead of the criminals. By being our eyes and our ears and finding the courage to report what is taking place in your area only strengthens our relentless pursuit of organised crime and could make a real difference for a child.
“I want to encourage communities to trust their instinct. If something doesn’t feel right; report it. If you think somebody is being exploited, or you think a house might have been taken over by drug dealers, feed that information to us. If you want to remain anonymous, report it through Crimestoppers, and we will act.”
nformation can be shared by calling 101. If you would prefer to remain anonymous, call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
