‘The Political Reporter’ is a new media installation by Boone, NC-based artist Mark Nystrom that generates random, but intriguing statements with words found on political websites and in the media. Sources include the Obama and Romney presidential campaigns, the Democratic and Republican parties, bloggers and the news media.

‘The Political Reporter’ animates a cloud of letters and periodically makes statements. These images are screen grabs taken while ‘The Political Reporter’ was running on Election Day and the day after.

Letters from words gathered from conservative sources are colored red and ones from liberal sources are blue. ‘The Political Reporter’s’ vocabulary includes over 70,000 words, but only 300 appear on the screen at any given time. As words are used to make statements, they are replaced by randomly chosen new ones from the list of 70,000.

I find it very easy to love a bridge that's being swallowed by nature. Unlike some old world stone span, this one will eventually die or be replaced. But the process of a long, slow surrender is something gorgeous. Grasses are the first invaders, finding small splits in beams they exploit and expand. Dirt washed in from the surrounding lane allows for plenty of fresh soil, a living crossing over Wiswal Brook. McColough Road through these parts is almost abandoned, living on that thin line between sporadic use and forgetfulness. If it ever falls to one side of the latter, this crossing could easily be a memory. It's already shared a good few of mine. Discovering me as a wanderer between my daydreams and someone else's.

Here’s a favorite and staple of the Southern diet … buttermilk cornbread!

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups of buttermilk

3 1/2 cups of corn meal mix (important this is the mix, which already contains self-rising flour)

2 eggs

2 tbsp canola or corn oil

Instructions:

Mix together ingredients above until reaches a consistency somewhat thicker than your average cake batter then pour into the already prepped pan. Bake for about 20-25 minutes at 400 degrees. You can use the toothpick test to make sure it’s done.

Prepping the Pan:

In a seasoned 9-inch cast-iron skillet (using cast-iron is vital), put about 1-2 tablespoons of oil, then put the skillet into the oven during the preheat cycle. Remove and spread the oil around by either tilting the skillet or using a brush to make sure the oil coats the bottom and sides.

Keep in mind the skillet is VERY HOT and HEAVY, and you will need to use potholders to handle it.
