Monument against War and Fascism
The Monument against War and Fascism at Helmut Zilk Square
The 'Gate of violence' with the bronze sculpture of the kneeling Jew
"Kneeling and street washing Jew"
The Monument against War and Fascism is a work of the Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka. It stands on the Helmut Zilk Square in Vienna, opposite the Palais Archduke Albrecht and the back of the Vienna State Opera. As accessible memorial it should serve as a reminder of the darkest era of Austrian history. It is dedicated to all victims of war and fascism.
History
At this point stood the Philipphof, a representative residential building from the Gründerzeit period, which on 12 March 1945 was destroyed by a bomb attack. Hundreds of people who had sought protection in the cellars, were killed. The buried persons could not be salvaged, their exact number never could be ascertained. At the location of the Philip-Hof in Austrian Bedenkjahr (bethink year) in 1988 by the city of Vienna the "Monument against War and Fascism" was built. Design and execution were in the hands of the Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka. It was on 24 November 1988 unveiled in the presence of high dignitaries.
The memorial
On the front side of the square stands the "Gate of violence". It is made of granite, as it was dragged by thousands of prisoners over the Stairs of Death in the quarry of the Mauthausen concentration camp. The sculpture on the left should remember the victims of the mass murder that was committed there and in other camps and prisons by the Nazis, as well as to the victims of resistance and persecution for reasons of national, religious and ethnic affiliation, mental and physical disabilities and sexual orientation. The group of figures of the right gate column is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the war. The faceless body of a woman giving birth should symbolize Austria's rebirth after the horrors of the war.
The first victims of the Nazi ruling powers were in addition to the political opponents the Jews. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on 12 March 1938 Jews were forced to clean up in "Reibpartien (rubbing off - carried out by different political enemies)" the streets of pro-Austrian and anti-Nazi slogans. The bronze sculpture of a kneeling, street washing Jew reminds of this indignity and humiliation which preceded the merciless persecution and murder of Jewish citizens directly after the Anschluss.
"Orpheus entering the Hades", a in a block of marble merging figure of a man, is a memorial to the bombing victims and to the sacrificial death of those who at the risk of their own lives the Nazism have put up resistance.
On 27 April 1945, as in the west of Austria still was being fought, proclaimed in Vienna the representatives of the new or re-formed political parties by the Austrian declaration of independence the re-establishment of the Republic of Austria. On the "stone of the Republic" are excerpts of the then formulated policy statement as well as the names of those men they have it undersigned immortalized.

Acceptance
The construction of the memorial was then accompanied by criticism. On one hand, some wanted no memory of the role of the Austrians (Österreicherinnen und Österreicher) during the Nazi era, others found the central location near the State Opera and the Albertina offensive. On the other hand, was criticized the term "all victims of the war". On the right sculpture a fallen Wehrmacht soldier with bucket helmet is shown lying on the floor. Representatives of the Jewish community Vienna such as Simon Wiesenthal thereupon strongly promoted for a separate memorial to the Jewish victims, which was built in 2000 at the Jewish Square.
The sculpture of the Jew on the Reibepartie often was not recognized as such. Some visitors seated themselves on the back for a rest. The gold artist and sculptor Johannes Angerbauer-Goldhoff painted in an announced art campaign TOOTH GOLD TIME GOLD on 25 May 1990 the plastic with gold paint. The art event was constantly observed by two state policemen and an officer of the criminal police. Subsequently, it came to the arrest of the artist with simultaneous removal of the plastic. Mayor Helmut Zilk, after him the place was later named, as the proprietary representative of the City of Vienna, initially responded with the argument of property damage. An announced complaint against the artist was on 21 January 1991 officially ceased. As a reaction Alfred Hrdlicka a barbed wire of iron set on the back of the statue, to prevent any further besitting by people. The spines pointing upward show by its gleams, that the plastic is still besitted.
The monument over the years has found general acceptance and is now a much visited place.

In 1998 we were trying to get together a treatment for a documetary about electric chairs. This was a title sequence concept of the film frame getting jammed in the projector gate and burning. Of course "Electric Chair Documentary" was just a working title. We probably would have called it "Asses of Fire".

Between 1944 and 1962, more than 1000 prisoners were executed in this room and later buried in mass graves outside Vilnius. Objects found in these mass graves are now on display within the glass cases located across the floor of the room. The Museum of Genocide Victims was established in 1992 after being used as a prison and detention centre during the Russian occupation from 1940 to 1991. The KGB Prison, located in the basement of the former courthouse, now looks the same as it did when it was vacated.

Commander's log, date 05.03.2735:
My execution came and went. I had been 'cuffed again, and a hood had been put over my head. I was ready to die. I figured I could at least die with the satisfactory knowledge that I hadn't given away any DDF secrets. But then I heard some screams. They were the screams of the guards, as Jim was decapitating them. He rescued me, and I was quite astounded to see him. After all, I had believed him to be dead. But he explained the situation to me. He had actually come across a DM underwater patrol in the pond. It was the DM underwater patrol's blood I had seen, not Jim's. But he had gotten caught on a rock down there, so it was a while before he surfaced. He found a lone DM soldier and killed him to get weapons. Then he gathered intel and found me. And what a relief that was! Now, Jim and I shall return to base to resume our normal activities.

General consensus was that the book was good for large company process execution with a Midwest mentality. But in the Silicon Valley, emphasis is on innovation and practice.
