Van Nelle Factory, Rotterdam The Netherlands – Architects: Brinkman and Van der Vlugt – masterplan 1914 – 1923; design 1923 – 1925; execution 1925 - 1931
The Van Nelle Factory is one of the highlights of the Modern Movement in the Netherlands. The impressive glass building is not only an example of functionalism and rational production, but also improved working conditions for workers in the twentieth century. The restored building is now one of the most important monuments of Rotterdam
The Firm Van Nelle was selling coffee, tea, tobacco and snuff in Rotterdam since 1782. The entirely new complex consists of the actual factory building, an office building, a warehouse, expedition and storage depots along the canal, a boiler house and several workshops. A cafeteria and sports fields were also to be found in the area. The factory building consists of three elongated in height sloping parts separated by stairwells. Tobacco has eight, coffee five and tea factory three floors. The staircases house the washing and changing facilities, toilets and lifts, separated for men and women. This allowed for continues factory floors and easily adjustable layouts. By using a concrete frame the non-load bearing facades could be made almost entirely of glass with only thin steel frames. Light and air could penetrate deep into the building. The expedition and storage strip along the water is connected to the main building by overhead conveyor bridges. Another sky bridge connects the plant to the office at the entrance of the complex. The office consists of a strip with two layers of offices and a large open space with glass walls and glass meeting rooms. The office follows the curve in the road. During construction, a tea room on the roof of the tobacco factory was added.
In 1942, low-rise warehouses designed by Brinkman and Van den Broek were realized. In 1974 at the back of the building, a new distribution centre was built. In 1951 other products such as pudding and chewing gum made their entrance. After a takeover by the American Standard Brands in 1989, Van Nelle competitor Sara Lee / Douwe Egberts, sold the complex in 1995, so it could finally get the status of national monument. Using the name Van Nelle Design Factory, the complex started a new life. The factory complex was restored by Wessel de Jonge and Claessens Erdmann. The transparency of the factory floor was maintained as much as possible by the new climate walls on the inside. The new inner facades are made of aluminium and therefore clearly identifiable as new elements. On the floors office spaces of various sizes have been realized for the creative sector. The ground floor is used for exhibitions and conferences. The adjacent buildings have been restored and are used by a number of architectural firms.

Where danish members of the resistance where executed by the german soldiers and gestapo during WW2 and the occupation of Denmark april 9 th 1940 - may 5th 1945.
Plaque where the shotters stood, says:
"Boys you boys
you lit for Denmark
In the darkest night
a bright dawn".
Between 1944 and 1962, more than 1000 prisoners were executed in this room and later buried in mass graves outside Vilnius. Objects found in these mass graves are now on display within the glass cases located across the floor of the room. The Museum of Genocide Victims was established in 1992 after being used as a prison and detention centre during the Russian occupation from 1940 to 1991. The KGB Prison, located in the basement of the former courthouse, now looks the same as it did when it was vacated.

My execution came and went. I had been 'cuffed again, and a hood had been put over my head. I was ready to die. I figured I could at least die with the satisfactory knowledge that I hadn't given away any DDF secrets. But then I heard some screams. They were the screams of the guards, as Jim was decapitating them. He rescued me, and I was quite astounded to see him. After all, I had believed him to be dead. But he explained the situation to me. He had actually come across a DM underwater patrol in the pond. It was the DM underwater patrol's blood I had seen, not Jim's. But he had gotten caught on a rock down there, so it was a while before he surfaced. He found a lone DM soldier and killed him to get weapons. Then he gathered intel and found me. And what a relief that was! Now, Jim and I shall return to base to resume our normal activities.

The death sentence handed down to (The execution of) British drug smuggler Akmal Shaikh and the requests for clemency from the British government and other groups has highlighted the conflicting attitudes towards both the death penalty and the defense of “diminished responsibility” in China and the UK.
The has set off a torrent of discussion on-line with thousands of comments left at ifeng.com - a popular Chinese website that has been reporting the case.
The vast majority are of the opinion that it would not only be unfair but a serious challenge to Chinese law if the government spared the life of a convicted drug smuggler. These people insist there should be no sympathy for drug smugglers as heroin is one of the most dangerous drugs on the planet. They say it harms people, society and families – and the problems it causes cost the government billions a year. In addition there’s a widespread feeling that the way China runs its legal system is nothing to do with outsiders. They say this man was in China when he committed the crime and it should be up to the Chinese courts to punish criminals as they see fit.

Members of the English Civil War Society gathered in London on Sunday for the annual commemoration of the execution of King Charles I. They marched from St James’s Palace to Horseguards Parade, where they held a short service, followed by a wreath laying at Banqueting House

Charles I was executed outside Banqueting House on 30th January 1649. The King requested 2 shirts to wear because it was so cold, and he didn’t want those watching to think he was shaking from fear. One of the silk ‘vests’ supposedly worn by Charles on that day will be part of the @museumoflondon exhibition ‘Executions’ which opens on 16th October

St John the Baptist's church at Heather is 14th century in origin but aside from the tower was largely rebuilt during a major restoration in 1846. There is an attractive post-reformation memorial in the chancel and three windows by Burlison & Grylls.
I don't think this church is normally open outside of services.

Executions through shots in the back of the neck were carried out at an earthen wall or in a ditch. In the fall of 1944 the SS shot 92 Soviet officers, members of a resistance organization.
The man suspected for the killing of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 was himself assassinated, on his way from questioning to the prison.
There was lots of press waiting for photos and interviews as it was believed this would be one of the few opportunities in a long time.
There was lots of lights for the tv cameras and photographers, making it difficult for the police to see what was really happening, when Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner, stepped forward with gun in his hand, shooting Oswald dead, all on live tv.
And thus creating an enormous amount of conspiration theories...
