Army Reserve Soldiers took on a 4-mile ruck march carrying approximately 65 pounds worth of gear and equipment at Fort McCoy, Wis., April 28 during the 2015 Combined Theater Engineer Commands' (TEC) Best Warrior Competition hosted at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, April 25-29. A lonely little church with a red brick tower, not far from the Suffolk border. 'St Paul' in the parish name comes from an association with St Paul's Cathedral in London, as with nearby Belchamp St Paul. The church has two John Hayward windows, one of them early.

For the sixth consecutive year, engineers and staff from Pima County’s Transportation Department will teach kids how to make asphalt cookies during the “Discovering Engineering at the Mall” event on Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The event, held at Foothills Mall, 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd., brings together engineers from across the region to increase awareness and appreciation for the profession as part of Engineers Week, Feb. 21-27.
STATE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM: Members from the Delaware National Guard 166th Airlift Wing fire fighters and Civil Engineers, along with DNG members from the Joint Operations Center, met with Trinidad and Tibago’s Fire Service, Coast Guard and Police forces to discuss each other’s programs and best practices. The DNG is in Trinidad and Tobago this week as part of the National Guard’s State Partnership Program, developing relationships with the various departments within Trinidad’s Defence Force.
Through SPP, the National Guard conducts military-to-military engagements in support of defense security goals but also leverages whole-of-society relationships and capabilities to facilitate broader interagency and corollary engagements spanning military, government, economic and social spheres. Old Basher's Reunion, Rugby 2021
I met Llew (and fellow basher Tim Proudman) while we were studying at Kingston Polytechnic back in 1982. They gradually engineered me back into the railway scene which I'd semi-retired from at the age of 14 in 1976 to follow my newly acquired interest in aircraft, based around countless visits to Heathrow and Gatwick. Whereas the 1970s had been taken up with 'spotting' locos, the 1980s introduced me to the 'art of bashing', or getting haulage for the uninitiated. This often involved travelling on overnight trains to try and be in the right place at the right time. Throughout the 1980s, we travelled around the country, chasing down our favourite locos, and this can be summarised as follows:
- 1982-90 Travelled down every line with a passenger service, ending with the branch line from Norwich to Sheringham
- 1982-88 Chased the Whistlers (Class 40s) around the north of England, culminating in the 'Indian Summer' of 1984, followed by chasing D200 around the country on various railtours into 1988
- 1983-90 Perfected the art of 'Vac bashing' (Class 50s to the uninitiated), with many a trip to Oxford for a pint, and extended trips down to the south-west
- 1986 Said goodbye to steam-heat and the 'Tip-Tops' (Class 27s) in Scotland in 1986
- 1982-89 Travelled on many a railtour, usually to combine decent haulage with rare lines if possible.
As well as the above, a few sidelines developed, including station hopping to build up a collection of Edmondson platform tickets before they disappeared in the late 1980s (I may upload some photos of these if there's any interest?) - Routemaster bashing around London (who could resist hanging off that back platform!) - another of my alter-egos here: www.flickr.com/photos/southallroutemaster/ - and hunting down rare real ales at many of the brew houses of London; who remembers the wonderful Firkin pubs?...

The park, a public garden, was created through Baron Haussmann's development of Paris; a former quarry was developed by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand (1817-91), horticulturist Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps (1824-73), and architect Gabriel Davioud (1824-81). Work was commissioned by Emperor Napoleon III in 1860, and opened for the Universal Exhibition in 1867.
