About Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The May 25, 1977 theatrical debut of Star Wars --- on a scant 32 screens across America -- was destined to change the face of cinema forever. An instant classic and an unparalleled box office success, the rousing "space opera" was equal parts fairy tale, western, 1930s serial and special effects extravaganza, with roots in mythologies from cultures around the world.

From the mind of visionary writer/director George Lucas, the epic space fantasy introduced the mystical Force into the cultural vocabulary and it continues to grow, its lush universe ever-expanding through film, television, publishing, video games and more.

Rupert Blanchard is a young art school graduate whose trademark chests are built from an assortment of salvaged drawers and advertising logos. "I make my money out of other people's rubbish," he says cheerfully. It got too expensive to keep up a studio in Shoreditch so he bought at auction a tumble-down Margate warehouse for the price of a couple of year's London rent. There, stacked with formidable precision, is his stunning, and ever-expanding, stash of salvage. Useful hardware is neatly pigeonholed, as are piles of timber. Upstairs is the beginning of a new home - "though the roof is still leaking dreadfully."

In the ever-expanding tapestry of the universe, the recent revelations in quantum mechanics and quantum science have ignited a fervor of imagination and inquiry. As we peer through the veil of reality, a gateway to Proxima Centauri b—a planet that mirrors Earth in so many ways—beckons us to explore its potential. This newfound knowledge has propelled humanity into a realm of possibilities, where the dream of a second home emerges not merely as fantasy but as a plausible future. With Earth facing unprecedented challenges, from climate crises to overpopulation, the concept of 'Planet B' transcends mere escape; it becomes a beacon of hope. As our thoughts race with the implications of life on Proxima, we envision a world where humanity can thrive once more, nurturing the essence of existence in a new celestial cradle.

Poem

In whispers of stars, the secrets unfold,

A dance of the atoms, a tale yet untold,

Through quantum realms where the shadows entwine,

We glimpse at a future where destinies align.

Proxima calls with its enigmatic light,

A sanctuary awaits in the velvet of night.

With dreams woven rich in the fabric of space,

We seek out a home, a new kind of grace.

Haikus

Stars twinkle above,

Proxima's shores beckon us,

Hope's new dawn arises.

Quantum dreams take flight,

Life blooms on a distant world,

A chance to restart.

In the void we reach,

Hearts yearning for a new dawn,

Planet B awaits.

In the ever expanding city of Mumbai the thought of millions using plastic spoons for 5 minutes and trashing it for over 500 years didn’t fit the logic for brother-sister duo, Yash and Sachi Maniar. So, they founded Shunya Alternatives- sustainable options which leave shunya (pronounced shoe-nya), zero or nothing behind. With a long term view to reducing landfills they provide biodegradable tableware including plates, bowls and take-away cartons made from bagasse (a sugarcane by-product) and areca nut leaf and drinking straws made from bamboo. The Do School, Germany is providing mentoring and support to them as social entrepreneurs.

yesterday, Sam and I took a hike through the Montana gold -- the ecstatic aliveness of autumn where aspens turn and skies stay clear blue even as the temperatures drop below 50F and there is new snow on the peaks.

We walked along a meditative runnel through aspen and chokecherry groves, marsh grass and spent wild iris seedheads. The sage pumping out it's heady volatile oils and rabbitbrush brightening the dry grassy hills with pillows of yellow-white backlit seeds.

We found "our" redtail tree -- an ancient aspen tucked into the creek bottom where a pair of hawks raise their brood each spring on an ever-expanding platform of twigs and limbs.

I half expected to find a redtail feather gift, under the abandoned nest. No such luck. But I did have the luck of a whole hour lying on the gold with my companion and best friend: Sam taking in all the sights and smells of grove-wetland-autumn turning. And me, absorbing healing rays of sunlight and marveling at the trembling frame of sky leaves above me.

One of the small pavilions on the Pretty Terrace at Clevedon Court.

Clevedon Court dates back to the 13th century, when the Norman family of de Clevedon chose the location to build their manor house.

Close to Bristol and only a few miles from the sea, it has stayed the home of the local lords of the manor ever since, with the de Clevedons, the Wake family and the Elton family – who have lived there since 1709 – taking residence.

Much of the original medieval house remains, with a Great Hall and a small chapel, the latter remodelled by the Wakes during the Tudor period.

Much of the rest of the property was modernised by the Eltons in the 18th and 19th century as they rose to prominence in the ever-expanding Bristol.

As well as the main house, there is also a terraced garden which dates back to the 17th century, though the current design was most likely implemented by the Eltons after they took over the house in the 1720s.

The National Trust took over the home in 1960, though the Elton family still live there.

Raw shots of one of my home areas, Briar Cliff. It's my ever-expanding little roleplay area or neighborhood for some of my personal characters who are all connected in some way and know each other. I like how it's turning out and each home or room suits the different personality of the character who inhabits it. Kind of a new experiment for me, as I usually do standalone skyboxes, so I'm having alot of fun! (Note: Yeah, the unicorns don't fit - they're imaginary friends from one character's childhood, lol, so only she can 'see' them)

CLOSE THE CAMPS - Day 18 - Public Health & Harm Reduction

August 18, 2019 - Day 18 of a Month of Actions at ICE in San Francisco to CLOSE THE CAMPS.

From the organizers of the Day 18 rally:

"WE unite together as doctors, nurses, public health workers/researchers and advocates and as harm reductionists to confront the lethal obscenity of Trump’s concentration camps and policies of medical neglect and abuse toward those seeking refuge in our country.

It is imperative for health care providers to take an official and public stand against the inhuman treatment (in some cases, overseen by licensed medical professionals) at these ever-expanding detention facilities, at the conscious policy of neglect that is tantamount to torture and that has resulted in the wholly-avoidable deaths of at least 7 asylum-seeking children in the last few months. This needs to be called out and delegitimized, much as when professional psychiatrists/psychologists enabled and legitimized the brutal torture techniques at Guantanamo and CIA secret rendition-sites and were eventually confronted. That time is now.

PLEASE unite with us, concerned healthcare providers and public health workers from the UCSF, DPH and harm-reduction services communities in witness and opposition."

Paste Modernism is the largest celebration of the medium of 'paste-ups' in Australia, and is now presented again for the 3rd time at OUTPOST PROJECT on Cockatoo Island. Throughout its inception it has found residence in staples of the Sydney art scene, starting initially with the artist run residence Hibernia House in a guerilla exhibition, and finally graduating to the heritage walls of Cockatoo Island. Every available inch of over 300 square meters of wall space will be covered with the pasted artworks of over 100 local and international artists.

The 'Paste-Up' is an ever-expanding and innovative form of street art, that involves an artist making their work onto varying sizes of paper and then applying it to walls and surfaces within their urban environment using wheat-paste or wallpaper glue. Whether as black and white multiplied photocopies, colourful hand painted murals or thought provoking text pieces, the 'Paste-Up' is an immediate and bold contemporary art-form.

The medium explores not only aesthetic values, but is often politically and socially motivated - which allows experimentation both by accomplished artists as well as people with little or no artistic training. With all other street art genres, a hierarchy is in place based usually on the skill and years of training and practice of each artist (aerosol-can control/complexity of a stencil etc). Most 'Paste-Up' artists also have years of experience, creating intricate and well-planned artworks - however anybody right now, could find a photograph or jpeg that resonates with them, take it to a digital printer and with relatively little expense, print it out in wallpaper width paper sheets and put it up on the streets.

Curated by Ben Frost, Paste Modernism 3 includes artists such as: Pure Evil, Copyright, Dan Baldwin, Anthony Lister, Drab, Urban Cake Lady, Heesco, Bei Badgirl, Houl, Creon, John Doe, Simon Lovelace, RJ, Mats?!, Bridge Stehli, Esjay, Anton Benois, Numskull, Bennett, Vexta, Tez, Bunkwaa, Jumbo, Zap, Skel, HA-HA, SMC, 1337, Felix, Konsume Terror, Pigeonboy, Vars, Aelhra, Qwux and more. The OUTPOST PROJECT (4 November - 11 December 2011) Cockatoo Island, Sydney, Australia

I love LEGO minifigures! This is the very first set of ever-expanding minifigures series. I only have one duplicate for this set, the Nurse. Some sets I ended up with many duplicates while completing a set from many different sellers but this set I was lucky to have only one double.

One of the ever-expanding varieties of Kit-Kat in the "Sweetness for Adults" line, raspberry may be my favorite. While the taste is self-explanatory, I find it to have a vibrant raspberry tartness which was pleasantly surprising. Many of the white chocolate, berry flavors tend to be overly sweet and lack tartness. To my knowledge, this only comes in bags.

Henry Bannister's son Herbert Bannister was born on 26th June 1873 at Wincham, in the District of Northwich, in the County of Chester - which is Cheshire.

A lot of these old Birth Certificates can be confusing because of District, sub-district, and County changes. And with ever expanding town boundaries, old villages, once entities on their own, are now suburbs of some big urban sprawl ... for example - Headington, Barton, and Cowley in Oxfordshire, where some of the Bannister family lived and were born ... they are all now part of Oxford.

When son Herbert was born, Henry Bannister was working as a Labourer at a Salt Works - a gruelling occupation indeed. Henry was originally a cabinet maker, before he moved away from the comforts of his home in Beckley village. No-one as yet knows why he followed two of his brothers to Headington where they sought work in the Quarries, hauling stone and becoming stone masons.

For whatever reason, Henry moved from Oxford to Cheshire and started work in the salt mines. Later birth certificates show that he gave up this job and started a Greengrocers.

Shanghai is the most populous city in China. As a global city, Shanghai exerts influence over commerce, finance, culture, art, fashion, research and entertainment. The city is located in eastern China, at the middle portion of the Chinese coast, and sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

Once a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking.[6] The city flourished as a centre of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. After 1990, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in intense re-development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port.

The city is a tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and City God Temple, and its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower. Today, Shanghai is the largest centre of commerce and finance in mainland China, and has been described as the "showpiece" of the world's fastest-growing major economy.

Morning light shines through the dingy windows as Jamie Norwood, 14, of Louisville Ky., rolls out of the bed she has shared with her mother her entire life. So as not to wake her mother, she quietly pulls her honey colored hair back with a pink headband while tugging her sweatshirt self-consciously over her rounded stomach. She pulls up her favorite pair of pink Tinkerbelle sweatpants and runs out the door to catch the bus, as she clutches a pop tart in one hand and prenatal vitamins in the other. Jamie’s adolescent body is blossoming prematurely into womanhood as the growing shape of Ethan Allen Norwood creates quite a splash in her middle school classroom. Lunchroom conversations now consist of the adult topics of stretch marks, due dates, and prenatal checkups. Every once in a while Jamie will show off her ever-expanding milky smooth stomach to her friends, as the baby grows one half pound every week. Jamie will love her baby even if she did not choose him. She is a 14 year-old girl who over the next few months will make the journey from middle school to motherhood.

View of the Shu building Beijing.

With almost 20 years’ experience as a window cleaner, Zhang Shimin has witnessed the astounding urban growth of the Chinese capital. “There was nothing outside the Third Ring Road, when I first came to Beijing,” he explained, perched on the roof of a 31-story building overlooking the ring road.

Since Zhang’s arrival in 1993 as a migrant laborer from a rural area of Sichuan Province, many of the traditional bungalows that housed most of the Beijing residents have given way to tall apartment blocks catering to the city’s growing middle class.

With the boom has come heavy demands for exterior cleaning as residents can no longer reach the exterior of their windows. A few daring migrant workers like Zhang chose to take the risk and dangle down on ropes in pursuit of higher wages.

The most demanding periods of the year are from the middle of March to the end of May; then from the end of September until the bitter cold stops them from working.

The contrast between the humble dwellings of the migrant worker cleaners as compared to the homes they look into everyday could not be greater, but Zhang says he seldom looks into the windows while working. “I won’t compare myself with them while working, we are totally different groups.”

City expanding

In spite of the ever-expanding buildings, business is not all that it should be. Zhang explained that China’s strict anti-corruption campaign has affected their window cleaning business this year. “People who were taking rebates in the cleaning projects are holding back now, so there is really not as much as normal,” Zhang said.

As the thriving business center of Beijing, Chaoyang district, where Zhang’s high rise career started, was enjoying the soaring property opportunities in the first ten years of the 21th century. Construction work has now expanded around the major axis of the city. From the Third Ring Road, to the Fourth and now the Fifth and Sixth are seeing rising apartment buildings and with them, new opportunities for Zhang and his team emerge.

The Challenge Theme for week 45-48: SHIFTING SEASON

------------

When I was a kid (which some could say wasn't that long ago), Christmas season started promptly the day after Thanksgiving.

Now, it seems, that the Christmas season starts the day after Halloween. I went to Starbucks a day or two after Halloween and received this cup. (Yes, I've kept this in my house for 3 weeks now :) ). I used to complain about how retailers try to milk the consumer for an extra month of holiday shopping, but if this gets people to have the true spirit of the holidays for an extra month it can't be that bad.

Enjoy the extra month of merriment. Be kind to your fellowman, and try to keep the spirit year round.

The Banana Nebula is located in the southern hemisphere’s Carina constellation. The nebula is a red emission nebula composed mainly of ionized hydrogen gas which makes it a star forming cosmic structure. It is located at a distance of about 12,000 light years from Earth. NGC 3199 is about 75 light years in size. The Flickr photo is a true color image of the Banana Nebula.

The nebula receives its nickname of the Banana Nebula because of its arched shape. The arched shape is generated by the extremely strong stellar winds that are produced by the Wolf-Rayet star WR 18. The winds produce a bow shock pattern effect that is reminiscent of the forward part of a ship’s hull plowing through the sea. The resultant waves of the bow shock have an arched pattern as viewed by an observer looking at the surface of the disturbed water that is produced by the front of the moving ship. Bow shock patterns can be observed in many astrophotos where interstellar gas clouds are being deformed by impacting strong stellar winds.

The Wolf-Rayet star that is producing the arched Banana Nebula structure is a massive blue giant star that is rapidly consuming its nuclear fuel and ejecting large amounts atomic particles at extremely high speeds to form the strong stellar winds. The stellar winds from a Wolf-Rayet star can reach speeds up to 10 million km/hour. The surface temperatures of Wolf-Rayet stars can reach up to 200,000 degrees Kelvin which is about 33 times hotter than the surface of our Sun. The largest Wolf-Rayet star discovered is about 260 times more massive than our Sun. The blue giant will consume its nuclear fuel over a relatively short period of time until it reaches the point when iron atom nuclei that are produced from lighter atomic elements halt the nuclear fusion process. Iron atomic nuclei absorb energy instead of liberating it at the temperatures in the blue giant’s stellar interior.

The production iron nuclei will bring a halt to the generation of outward photon pressure from the core which causes an imbalance between the inward pressure of gravity against the outward photon pressure. The star will become unstable. When gravitational pressure wins out and the star collapses inward on itself almost instantaneously to produce a massive supernova explosion. This is the fate of WR 18. The effects of the supernova explosion will further deform the shape of the Banana Nebula in the relatively near cosmic future.

The arched structure of the Banana Nebula is the denser part of the extreme interstellar winds of the bow shock produced by WR 18. The arched structure is part of an ever expanding interstellar “bubble” of interstellar gas. Nebular “bubbles” are often observed when massive stars like WR 18 and other massive blue giant stars deform the gas clouds around them.

The CHI-3 astrograph located at the Telescope Live’s remotely controlled El Sauce Observatory in the high-altitude Atacama Desert in Chile was used to collect the image data from the Banana Nebula shown in my Flickr photo. CHI-3 consists of an ASA 1000 1 meter (39.6”) diameter reflecting telescope with a photographic speed of f/6.8 coupled to a Finger Lake Instruments FLI PL 16083 monochromatic CCD camera. AstroDon GEN II luminous, red, green, and blue wideband filters were inserted sequentially in front of the CCD camera to take the individual exposures. A total of fourteen hours of exposure time was used to acquire all of the image data. Nick Szymanek curated the data from CHI-3. I downloaded the data and postprocessed it to produce the Flickr photo. I used the following software to postprocess the data: Astro Pixel Processor and PixIinsight.

This year's holi pilgrimage took place in Guruijs birthplace: Mauritius.

From visiting temples around Mauritius to enjoying beautiful satsangs with Guruji, and of course celebrating holi and holika dahan, the burning of holika and so much more, this year’s pilgrimage granted us a full-spectrum adventure for the ever-expanding inner journey.

The F6F Hellcat began as a simple update to the successful F4F Wildcat, which by 1941 was recognized as approaching obsolescence. The XF6F-1 proposal was to upscale the basic Wildcat airframe to accept a more powerful Wright R-2600 Cyclone engine; besides having a larger airframe, the mid-mounted wing of the F4F would be moved to the bottom of the fuselage, allowing the XF6F-1 to have a wider-tracked landing gear, as the Wildcat’s narrow-tracked landing gear had caused some handing problems.

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States entry into World War II, dogfights between Wildcats and Japanese A6M Zeroes revealed just how maneuverable and fast the Zero was—far better than any Allied fighter then in service. With this in mind, Grumman now sought an even more powerful engine for greater performance: the XF6F-3 design would mount a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, half again as powerful as the Cyclone. Also building on combat experience with the Wildcat, Grumman would retain the earlier fighter’s strengths in the new design, namely easy handling, heavy machine gun armament, and most of all the Wildcat’s ruggedness. The first XF6F-3 Hellcat flew in July 1942. Not long afterwards, a Zero captured in the Aleutian Islands was flown against the Hellcat. While the Hellcat still could not turn with the Zero, it had a higher rate of roll and could easily outdive the more fragile Japanese fighter, and above 15,000 feet, was superior in the vertical plane.

F6F-3 Hellcats began reaching the ever-expanding US Navy in February 1943; its first combat tour was to be on the first of the new Essex-class fast fleet carriers. The combination of the two was to be a war winner. In its first major engagement, Hellcats covering the Marine landings on Tarawa in November 1943 accounted for 30 Zeroes for the loss of only one F6F. The Hellcat rapidly replaced the Wildcat in frontline service, and with the F4U Corsair having teething problems, would become the only shipboard fighter available to US Navy units. As a result of combat experience, Grumman switched production to the F6F-5 in early 1944, which included water injection for the engine, a redesigned minimal-frame canopy for better visibility, and strengthened airframe. Even after the problems with the Corsair were solved, the Hellcat would remain the primary US Navy air superiority fighter for the rest of the war. The F6F-3 and F6F-5 were the only variants of the fighter produced, which cut down production time and made field maintenance relatively simple: the Hellcat did not need much improvement.

The Hellcat’s effect on the war in the Pacific was undeniable. Using tactics known to the Navy as “the Big Blue Blanket,” F6Fs from carrier battlegroups would flood a target area, hunting down any and all Japanese aircraft. In the Battle of the Philippine Sea in July 1944, Hellcats shot down nearly 400 Japanese aircraft, with the result that the battle became known as the “Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.” F6Fs also began to be pressed into the ground support role, and armed with rockets and bombs, supported the American advance across the Pacific. Finally, Navy and Marine nightfighter units flew F6F-5Ns equipped with radar, which shielded the fleet from Japanese night intruders. A number of Hellcats were supplied to the British Fleet Air Arm, and these saw action in both the Pacific and Europe.

By war’s end, the F6F Hellcat had become the most successful fighter of the war, downing 5163 aircraft for the loss of 275 Hellcats, producing 363 aces at an unmatched kill ratio of 19:1—the highest ever achieved in aerial combat. 12,275 Hellcats were produced in less than three years, with the last rolling off the line in November 1945. Like most World War II era fighters, the Hellcat did not stay in service much longer after the war, with most US Navy and Marine fighter units reequipping with the F8F Bearcat or jets. The last Hellcats in US Navy service were expended as remote-controlled flying bombs against North Korean rail tunnels in 1952; the French Aeronavale also used them in the Indochina War. Last to withdraw the F6F from service was Uruguay, which used theirs until 1962. Today, at least 22 survive, most flyable.

Built as BuNo 42874, this F6F-3 never served with a Navy line squadron. Instead, it was supplied to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and used as a test aircraft, namely to test deliberately unstable aircraft designs. It was still flying with NACA in 1958 when the organization became NASA, and so was the only Hellcat to fly with NASA! In 1960, it was finally retired, and was placed in storage at its last base at Moffett Field, California. In 1974, it was moved to NAS Miramar and repainted as an operational Hellcat, and in 1979, was donated to the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

42874 has since been repainted again, this time as a F6F-3 of VF-10, flying off of the USS Yorktown (CV-10) during World War II. It is painted in midwar tricolor camouflage; the green spinner was generally exclusive to Yorktown aircraft. SDAM has it displayed with the wings stowed and the engine cowl open, against a backdrop of a famous picture taken of the Yorktown in 1943. There's also a small mockup of part of the carrier's bridge. As my dad served aboard the Yorktown during its Vietnam service, this was a nice thing to see when we visited in June 2023.

On the surface, the Golden Mile of old was a photographer's paradise (all towering smoke stacks, ever-expanding tailings dumps, and state-of-the-art processing plants) as captured by the great photographer J.J. Dwyer. But below ground, it was an even more amazing labyrinth of shafts, tunnels and stopes. To sustain the mines, thousands of workers were required, along with vast quantities of timber for the lining of the underground workings, as well as to power the steam turbines that provided the electricity.

By the 1980s, the underground mines that were still operating were no longer considered financially viable. An audacious scheme was hatched by Alan Bond to amalgamate all of the surviving mining leases into a single entity and to undertake open pit mining. While Bond himself didn't achieve this goal, others did, and today Kalgoorlie-Boulder is home to the massive Super Pit, one of the world's largest open pit gold mines.
