History of the Gallery

FÕVAROSI KÉPTÁR/KISCELLI MUSEUM (MUNICIPAL PICTURE GALLERY) was founded in 1889 as the fine art collection of Budapest. The intention to establish a museum was first worded in 1887. The Museum of Budapest to be housed in the Art Palace in the City Park, was eventually founded in 1899. In the first years the Museum collected works of fine art "related excusively to the city". Around 1909 were given new impetus by mayor Istvan Barczy whose very definte ideas about the art patronage of the capital made changes "in the direction that in a view of a future–to–be municipal gallery the pure aesthetic values of the art objects purchased became more decisive than the subject they present". One of the preconditions of a modern gallery, an ever–expanding collection was ready, but the building to house it took decades to find. The problem was eventually sold with the purchase of the Karolyi Mansion (in 1928), where the new institution, the Municipal Picture Gallery was opened on October 16th 1933. Between the world wars, the Municipal Picture Gallery played an important role in making 19th and 20th century art aviable to the public. After World War II. the MPG was the first receive visitors. In 1949 was stated that "the MPG has collected the best pieces of Hungarian created in these last 150 years which in the future could serve as a basis for the National Gallery". Between 1953–57 the works of art purchased out of "purely aesthetic considerations" merged with the collection of the National Gallery (more than 7000 pieces). From 1963 the MPG began to collect art again in a new place calls Kiscelli Múzeum. As the branch museum of the Budapest Historical Museum collects 20th century fine art, and specialised for contemporary art.

The city was Chambersburg, Pennsylvania — at the time a small town located at an intersection of thriving agriculture, commerce and local-made goods, a junction for travel to the busy cities of the north or south. Or a stop-over point perhaps, on the way westward towards the rugged and ever-expanding “New Frontier” of a new nation.

Originally founded in 1764 as a fort, the town was settled by Colonel Benjamin Chambers just 25 miles north of the line later formally surveyed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.

Quickly after its founding, the town grew with an influx of German immigrants. They migrated from the Palatinate area of Germany to the Cumberland Valley that so closely resembled their homeland. And their Reformed faith came with them.

Without a church building, they gathered first in the inn of Nicholas Snider located near the town square, and with the help of a Rev. Faber of Hagerstown, MD, formed a congregation in 1778.

Reverend Jeffrey Diller selects a rose for payment of the 2003 annual Church “Rose Rent” assisted by the younger generation of the church. The tradition dates back to 1780 and is among the state’s oldest religious traditions.

To encourage the local settlers, Col. Chambers deeded land for a church and graveyard in 1780, at the intersection of South Main Street and what was then German (now Liberty) Street. The first building was a log schoolhouse. In 1811, the construction of the present structure was begun.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Zion Reformed today continues to serve as a house of praise to God.

In its deed is the stipulation that each June, the congregation pay the annual rent of one rose from the church grounds to a descendent of the Chambers family “in perpetuity.”

Consequently, each year, the congregation of Zion marks its unique Rose Rent Sunday observance.

The windows in Zion’s sanctuary were dedicated in a special ceremony August 23, 1883, as part of a new renovation of the church. It is unknown as to their replacement value today. However, they have been described by some historians as among the finest examples of combination glass, gold-leaf and paint church windows from the 1800s period.

De-Bunking A Bit of Local Folklore about the church's Waterford chandelier :

One bit of local popular folklore has somehow connected Zion’s chandelier to the Civil War invasion of the town on July 30 1864, when Confederate forces would occupy and torch the town.

The popular story is that the chandelier was removed and hidden by members of the congregation to safeguard it from harm prior to Confederate forces entering Chambersburg. Later, the “invaders” burned most structures to the ground after the town leaders refused to pay a ransom of $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in cash. (Both cash and gold were removed days beforehand and sent to nearby Harrisburg for safe-keeping). Zion Church was only a handful of buildings to be spared from the Confederate’s torches.

“Remember Chambersburg!” would later serve as a rallying cry for many of the Union forces as they advanced deeper into the South in the late summer of 1864.

Even though this interesting tale is still passed along through the years, there is no historical fact or church record to support this or any similar version of this event.

This is just a doodle. Not really anything, just shape study i suppose. I am trying to motivate myself to quit smoking by tempting myself with a brick every day, an ever expanding collection of 2x2. I'm not sure why but of all of the parts in the LEGO catalog, the 2x2 brick is by far my favorite. It is beautiful in symetry and proportion. I look forward to seeing what can be accomplished within the confines of this one brick, whilst I try to keep myself away from a nasty habit.

On a recent visit I discovered they were now offering soda pop and I don't mean your run of the mill Pepsi / Coke brands that you find everywhere. That you can find at any big box store no Schauer's had a lins of pops I hadn't seen since my youth like Green River and Mr. Frosty. They also had some I'd never heard of like Leninade, Kickopoo Joy Juice and a line of Capone Family Soda's. Cheers!

In the ever-expanding tapestry of the universe, the recent revelations in quantum mechanics and quantum science have ignited a fervor of imagination and inquiry. As we peer through the veil of reality, a gateway to Proxima Centauri b—a planet that mirrors Earth in so many ways—beckons us to explore its potential. This newfound knowledge has propelled humanity into a realm of possibilities, where the dream of a second home emerges not merely as fantasy but as a plausible future. With Earth facing unprecedented challenges, from climate crises to overpopulation, the concept of 'Planet B' transcends mere escape; it becomes a beacon of hope. As our thoughts race with the implications of life on Proxima, we envision a world where humanity can thrive once more, nurturing the essence of existence in a new celestial cradle.

Poem

In whispers of stars, the secrets unfold,

A dance of the atoms, a tale yet untold,

Through quantum realms where the shadows entwine,

We glimpse at a future where destinies align.

Proxima calls with its enigmatic light,

A sanctuary awaits in the velvet of night.

With dreams woven rich in the fabric of space,

We seek out a home, a new kind of grace.

Stars twinkle above,

Quantum dreams take flight,

Life blooms on a distant world,

A chance to restart.

In the void we reach,

Hearts yearning for a new dawn,

Planet B awaits.

The ever expanding port of Las Palmas has been under pressure to liberate space and extend into the sea to provide new berths and indeed, a complete new outer harbour - La Esfinge (The Sphinx).

Concurrently, the growing population of the island and increasing tourist numbers has led to more oil based product imports, leading to the requirement for more oil storage.

Plans have been afoot for a number of years to remove some of the tank farms that are close to populated areas on La Isleta, and to construct new facilities on the extreme North East point of the island. This has required extensive blasting and the removal of volcanic deposits to create semi-protected areas where new tank farms will be constructed.

The stored oils will be shielded to the West by sheer volcanic walls and to the South and East by the open sea.

Oryx Energies have already established the first new tank farm, more will follow.

Our ever-expanding food-storage shelves in the the garage.

So are you guys ready for a long and convoluted story? Heck yes!? Alright, let's go.

So a couple of weeks ago my friend Rebekah, Dragon-Lu-Ver here on Flickr, introduced me to an amazing blog called Pioneer Woman, written by and amazing thanks to Ree Drummond. So while perusing this blog of deliciousness and eye wonderment I came upon a recent photography post that talked about photographing food. It got me thinking that I haven't done much food photography lately, I'm always too busy eating it!

So I said to myself, "Hey myself, food is pretty awesome and yummy right? Why don't you go show the world how awesome and yummy it is!", and so I responded, "WHY DON'T I INDEED, MYSELF?!"

And now you're here, looking at these butter bubbles lusciously glide across this sweet wheat dinner roll which has been dusted over with crunchy ambrosial oats scattered under the ever expanding pool of plentiful butter.

Congratulations.

Sihanoukville would never win first prize in a pretty-town competition but thanks to a surrounding coastline of white-sand beaches this is Cambodia's most happening sun-sloth destination. Named in honour of the then head-of-state, Sihanoukville (Kong Preah Sihanouk; also known as Kompong Som) was hacked out of the jungle in the late 1950s to create Cambodia’s first and only deep-water port, strategically vital because it meant that the country’s international trade no longer had to pass through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.

Today it is a bustling and ever expanding city, but its sandy bits are one step removed from the hubbub. The Serendipity Beach area is a sort of decompression chamber for backpackers, who flock here to rest up between travels and party through the night.

Even further away from the hustle, in the far south of town, is relaxed Otres Beach, where cheap bungalow joints and bohemian-flavoured guesthouses are now neighbours with rather swish boutique resorts. The mellow scene here ticks all the boxes if you're looking for lazy days of sunbathing rather than night-time bar-hopping.

Although none of Sihanoukville's beaches qualify as Southeast Asia's finest, the sandy strips rimmed by casuarina trees and coconut palms have plenty of tropical charm and it's easy to find stretches of sand to yourself, especially if you venture outside the centre. If they're not picture-postcard-perfect enough for you, Sihanoukville is also the jumping-off point to Cambodia's southern islands, where castaway-cool beckons.

"moving day"

It's kind of sad to see...but the local (ever expanding) hospital is buying up old 1960's type neighborhoods

around it. These were in a 4 square block area. Amidst all the now empty lots are a few holdouts still living in their homes. It has to be sad to see your neighbors sell out and go, their homes torn down, and know sooner or later yours will suffer the same fate. These 2 are being moved, and we couldn't figure out why. They aren't very well built or even in very good condition. But, I guess if you own them in this economy you can get what you want...even a rather unconventional "move!"

Pawel Romanczuk started Small Instruments (known in Polish as Małe Instrumenty) in 2006. This five-piece band explores new sounds using a wide array of small instruments, from toy pianos to homemade child-sized cellos. Other members include Marcin Ożóg, Tomasz Orszulak, Jędrzej Kuziela and Maciej Bączyk. Romanczuk’s residency at MIT involved a workshop in instrument building and composition for MIT students, culminating in a public concert.

In 2007, the band made its debut at Era New Horizons Film Festival in Wroclaw, Poland and has since worked on many music projects under the name of Małe Instrumenty. Małe Instrumenty also record music for films, broadcasts, and audio books. The group has collaborated with many prominent art organizations and artists in Poland and Europe.

Inspired by the soundtracks to old Polish animated films, the instruments used in the group’s sonic experiments feature an ever-expanding array of instruments, children’s toys, and strange musical inventions. Małe Instrumenty’s music reveals the unique colors of sound, from the beautiful to the surprising to the insightful.

Bickleton Carousel Museum. I paid admission and could have gotten a lovely detailed tour but decided I'd rather see wildlife (or at least, wildlife that wasn't taxidermies...) will have to plan to spend time there, if I ever go back for a longer period of time than an overnight stay (staying in Goldendale, which has some great wildlife nearby as well.) To quote their web site: "The Carousel Museum opened in May of 2007 to display and house the 24 horses and 4 carriages from our 1890-1906 Herschell-Spillman traveling track Carousel and house the history of Alder Creek Country. The museum has been gifted over 4800 historical items and artifacts that we use in our ever changing displays. In 2024 we are featuring Military, Churches in our area in 1900, Barb Wire Display, Wildlife of our Alder Creek area, Great Grandma’s Kitchen, 100+ years of Wheat Farming, Native American, Schools, Laundry, Brands, Tools, Music Room and much more. Our history room is ever expanding as we preserve the past for the future. Come see us!"

Shanghai is the largest city in China, and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, with over 20 million people. Located on China's central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the city is administered as a municipality of the People's Republic of China with province-level status.

Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The city flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. However, Shanghai's prosperity was interrupted after the 1949 Communist takeover and the subsequent cessation of foreign investment. Economic reforms in 1990 resulted in intense development and financing in Shanghai, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world's largest cargo port.

The city is a tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and City God Temple, its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and its new reputation as a cosmopolitan center of culture and design. Today, Shanghai is the largest center of commerce and finance in mainland China, and has been described as the "showpiece" of the world's fastest-growing major economy.
