CLOSE THE CAMPS - Day 18 - Public Health & Harm Reduction

August 18, 2019 - Day 18 of a Month of Actions at ICE in San Francisco to CLOSE THE CAMPS.

From the organizers of the Day 18 rally:

"WE unite together as doctors, nurses, public health workers/researchers and advocates and as harm reductionists to confront the lethal obscenity of Trump’s concentration camps and policies of medical neglect and abuse toward those seeking refuge in our country.

It is imperative for health care providers to take an official and public stand against the inhuman treatment (in some cases, overseen by licensed medical professionals) at these ever-expanding detention facilities, at the conscious policy of neglect that is tantamount to torture and that has resulted in the wholly-avoidable deaths of at least 7 asylum-seeking children in the last few months. This needs to be called out and delegitimized, much as when professional psychiatrists/psychologists enabled and legitimized the brutal torture techniques at Guantanamo and CIA secret rendition-sites and were eventually confronted. That time is now.

PLEASE unite with us, concerned healthcare providers and public health workers from the UCSF, DPH and harm-reduction services communities in witness and opposition."

I love LEGO minifigures! This is the very first set of ever-expanding minifigures series. I only have one duplicate for this set, the Nurse. Some sets I ended up with many duplicates while completing a set from many different sellers but this set I was lucky to have only one double.

The Los Angeles Fire Department and the Los Angeles City Firefighters Association are proud to recognize Captain II Richard Moody as "Firefighter of the Year” for his many personal and professional accomplishments during calendar year 2023.

With 24 years of exceptional service to the people of Los Angeles, Captain Moody brings spirited leadership, selfless dedication, approachability and positivity to all he does.

Prior to joining the Los Angeles Fire Department in 2000, Richard spent ten years as a paid-call Firefighter and Captain for the Orange County Fire Authority.

After commencing his LAFD career, he quickly discovered a love for firefighting truck operations, and was soon promoted to Apparatus Operator, serving that role with distinction at Fire Stations 17 (Industrial Eastside), 102 (Valley Glen), 10 (Convention Center District), and 98 (Pacoima).

Earning a promotion to Captain I, he proudly served a leadership role at Station 41 serving Hollywood and the Hollywood Hills, before achieving a special duty position in LAFD Tactical Planning. His many contributions to that demanding specialty assignment helped him in earning a promotion to Captain II and service as the Task Force Commander at busy Fire Station 11 in the Westlake / MacArthur Park area. With a leadership style characterized by an open-door policy, Captain Moody has never missed an opportunity to train and learn alongside those in his command, and has been perpetually noted for always putting the needs of his crew first.

With Captain Moody's highly specialized skills and experience in high demand, he was soon assigned to the LAFD Critical Incident Planning and Training Section (CIPTS) to handle complex logistics, where he has supported the department's multitude of large-personnel commitments to incidents such as brush fires, civil unrest, municipal events, large-scale emergencies and memorial services for firefighters.

It is worthy of noting that he has served on the logistics cadre in almost every LAFD fallen member's memorial service for the last 20 years, as well as compassionately assisting other Fire and Police agencies in their most difficult moments.

His ever-expanding role within the Department and in support of allied agencies is indeed legendary, including service as a member of FEMA Task Force 1, Field Incident Management Team, and as a Trustee of the Los Angeles Firemen's Relief Association. A beloved mentor, he selflessly assists with LAFD In-Service Apparatus Operator training videos and has presented the essential After Action Review for the Apparatus Operators Core Program. He enjoys helping with Department related fundraisers such as golf tournaments, Hope For Firefighters and other important events, such as the LAFD Valor Awards.

Captain Moody served the demanding role as the Logistics Section Chief for the Getty Fire in 2019, overseeing the first-ever 100% City-Managed Base Camp for over 2,000 firefighters. It was a milestone success for our Department, and his Logistics Section set a new standard for the support, care and treatment of deployed firefighters in the midst of a major firefight.

At CIPTS, Richard has created a full-time logistical support group, supplying a wide variety of equipment and vehicles, developing vendor relationships and designing response procedures for both planned and emergency events near and far. He has an uncommon ability to say “yes” to - and most importantly deliver, any requested need from the Department or City, no matter how big or small, through the remarkable relationships he has developed within and beyond the LAFD.

As but one example, within 12 hours of the Mayor's request, Rich assembled and led a team to open a first-of-its-kind Covid-19 Public Testing Site at the LAFD Frank Hotchikin Training Center in Elysian Park, fully staffed by nurses, doctors and firefighters. The site served as the blueprint for and eventually expanded into the Dodger Stadium vaccine super-site.

Other special events that Captain Moody and his LAFD CIPTS team have overseen include the Space Shuttle Endeavour final move, U.S. Special Olympics, World Police and Fire Games, L.A. Port Fleet Weeks, Dodgers, Lakers and Kings games, The Summit of the Americas, and countless concerts, festivals, ceremonies, protests and award shows.

He is looking forward to participating on LAFD’s team to organize and manage a successful City deployment for the LA2028 Summer Olympics.

Without question, Rich exemplifies leadership and humility in the ever-changing role of our Department. The men and women of therefore heartily congratulate Captain II Richard Moody for being named 2023 Firefighter of the Year!

Poster Overview

Background: Early diagnosis is vital for children with autism and their families in order to facilitate earlier intervention. Parents are faced with the ever-expanding wealth of information regarding autism that may be generic or rely on diagnostic symptomatology that does not manifest in their child. A community need exists for an evidence-based tool that can bridge the gap between diagnostic criteria and unique child’s characteristics. The Early Childhood Outcomes Framework, provides a promising strategy for this work in relation to Family Interaction, Parenting and Wellbeing. The proposed tool will provide a dynamic and accessible outline of the child’s strengths and difficulties.

Method: A mixed approach will be interpreted via survey and interviews leading to the development of the tool. Its effectiveness and usability will be validated across educational, clinical and community settings.

Conclusions: An individualised tool such as this is absent from the literature and will add vital utility and accessibility for informed intervention choices.

Biography

My academic and work background, in Special Educational Needs encouraged me to further pursue research in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. My research aims to investigate how parents understand autism in relation to their child’s unique traits. I am developing a question-based tool, through consultation with parents, individuals with autism and professionals, to assist parental understanding of their autistic child’s challenging behaviour and improve parents’ interactions and decisions about applied autism services. To achieve this, I will gather parents’ experiences from a sample of English-speaking parents of autistic children via an online survey and interviews, to gain a deeper and more detailed picture of the themes raised by parents. In a later phase, a profiling tool will be developed and being optimised for ease of use and interpretation by parents and professionals. I hope my work will be a step forward in autism research, bringing society closer to the needs of families with autistic individuals.

When I was in art school, I was major in print making. I have stacks of hand pull prints from that period; some are etchings but mostly are silk screen prints. I never sold any of them and no one has seen them since I graduated from art school. I just treat them as part of my ever expanding works. I had no intention of discarding them so they came with me for all my moves. Finally, last year, I started to remake them to my current art. At first, I used them for paper sculptures and cards

.

Yesterday, I found this one which I had already cut into narrow strip among some of my old works. The piece is 5”x17” with a dark brown and blues. Right away I see the blue area in the print looks like a koi swimming in the pond. I turned it into a paper cut which took almost a whole day to finish.

Read this post on Elitistreview - Beef Cartel at Hawksmoor – from the stars to the gutter

Since having Pedro’s meat at Casa Nicolas in Tolosa, the Basque country, I’ve though it’s been the best beef I’ve ever eaten. However, I am well aware that the limits of pleasure are yet to be defined or reached, so was pleased that two of the dishes at the Beef Cartel event at Hawksmoor last night out-performed Pedro’s ox chops.

However, there is more to a dining experience than raw ingredients and this event utterly failed in every other regard. The portions were insulting, the service glacial and the eating environment terrifying. Whoever arranged this event clearly had no idea how to organise an enjoyable meal. As an unabashed fan of Hawksmoor it pains me to say that Editor Dani and I found this to be one of the most dreadful restaurant visits of our lives.

The idea of the event was to eat an entire Mull Highland cow from Iain Mackay, sourced by the Beef Cartel. The cow was eight years old and its beef made two of the six courses (we only stayed for five) the most amazing things I’ve ever put in my mouth. These were so good I’ll start with them.

Slow-grilled chuck, cooked over apple wood, utterly blew my mind with its powerful flavours and dense texture. It was stunningly delicious, the incredible beefiness of the meat enhanced by being served in a little melted kidney fat. Like all the dishes it was a little tough, which I suppose you might expect from an eight year old cow, but it tasted so utterly fantastic this didn’t matter and I adored my two slices of beef. This is a cut of meat that is not prized, normally used for making mince or similar, so the fact that this was so enjoyable clearly showed the animal had class.

The following course was, to my mind, even better. Slow smoked rib of beef was meltingly tender and richly complex in flavour. It had be grunting and gesticulating with unrestricted pleasure and expanded my horizons of meat enjoyment.

However, the excessive quality of those two courses is ignoring the elephant in the room; namely that it was an event run with appalling incompetence that made it almost impossible to enjoy.

It was almost impossible to feel like you’d eaten any appreciable amount of food. With the number of people present all dining on one cow it meant that each course contained so little beef a vegetarian would be happy to eat them. They were miniscule amounts of food that combined with the pace of the service resulted in you being utterly starving all of the time. It was not a cheap evening and I was offended to leave it feeling hungry.

The pace of the service was shocking. The gaps between each course grew increasingly tiresome with the chefs standing around chatting in groups for so long they were in danger of becoming stagnant ponds. When they could actually be bothered to prepare a course it was service to the assembled hordes with reasonable efficiency, but as each tiny plateful took moments to eat the ever-expanding gaps between getting them just dragged and dragged. If your servings are going to be miniscule you should have the decency to keep them coming at a reasonable pace and not leave your guests hanging around for hours.

The number of people present and the geological pace of the meal made the restaurant atmosphere unbearable. As people tend to hit the bottle at Hawksmoor the huge numbers of people present soon got painfully loud. This was worse in the yawning gaps between each course when it seemed half the restaurant would stand up and assemble in groups to shout at each other. Shouting seemed the only way of being heard whilst at the same time making it impossible to hear anything. My primary school dinner hall, where it was not unusual to see lumps of mashed potato flying through the air, was a more civilised dining environment.

We felt cheated to get so little food, served with so little competence, in such a horrible environment for what was quite a lot of our limited funds. Whoever organised this should hang their heads in shame and give up organising dining events, they clearly cannot do it. I have a few meals at Hawksmoor booked in the near future, and I look forward to them, but the Beef Cartel at Hawksmoor event just makes me think of losing my equilibrium, lots of money and respect for the restaurant.

Doel is a 700 year old village on the river Scheldt in Belgium. Near to the local nuclear power plant, with its two giant cooling towers, it became the target for demolition not once but twice in order to make way for the ever expanding harbor. The successful protest groups of the seventies could not compete in the 90's and as residents began to leave, the government refused to rent out the properties again and instead let them fall into disrepair.

Paste Modernism is the largest celebration of the medium of 'paste-ups' in Australia, and is now presented again for the 3rd time at OUTPOST PROJECT on Cockatoo Island. Throughout its inception it has found residence in staples of the Sydney art scene, starting initially with the artist run residence Hibernia House in a guerilla exhibition, and finally graduating to the heritage walls of Cockatoo Island. Every available inch of over 300 square meters of wall space will be covered with the pasted artworks of over 100 local and international artists.

The 'Paste-Up' is an ever-expanding and innovative form of street art, that involves an artist making their work onto varying sizes of paper and then applying it to walls and surfaces within their urban environment using wheat-paste or wallpaper glue. Whether as black and white multiplied photocopies, colourful hand painted murals or thought provoking text pieces, the 'Paste-Up' is an immediate and bold contemporary art-form.

The medium explores not only aesthetic values, but is often politically and socially motivated - which allows experimentation both by accomplished artists as well as people with little or no artistic training. With all other street art genres, a hierarchy is in place based usually on the skill and years of training and practice of each artist (aerosol-can control/complexity of a stencil etc). Most 'Paste-Up' artists also have years of experience, creating intricate and well-planned artworks - however anybody right now, could find a photograph or jpeg that resonates with them, take it to a digital printer and with relatively little expense, print it out in wallpaper width paper sheets and put it up on the streets.

In the ever-expanding tapestry of the universe, the recent revelations in quantum mechanics and quantum science have ignited a fervor of imagination and inquiry. As we peer through the veil of reality, a gateway to Proxima Centauri b—a planet that mirrors Earth in so many ways—beckons us to explore its potential. This newfound knowledge has propelled humanity into a realm of possibilities, where the dream of a second home emerges not merely as fantasy but as a plausible future. With Earth facing unprecedented challenges, from climate crises to overpopulation, the concept of 'Planet B' transcends mere escape; it becomes a beacon of hope. As our thoughts race with the implications of life on Proxima, we envision a world where humanity can thrive once more, nurturing the essence of existence in a new celestial cradle.

Poem

In whispers of stars, the secrets unfold,

A dance of the atoms, a tale yet untold,

Through quantum realms where the shadows entwine,

We glimpse at a future where destinies align.

Proxima calls with its enigmatic light,

A sanctuary awaits in the velvet of night.

With dreams woven rich in the fabric of space,

We seek out a home, a new kind of grace.

Haikus

Stars twinkle above,

Proxima's shores beckon us,

Hope's new dawn arises.

Quantum dreams take flight,

Life blooms on a distant world,

A chance to restart.

In the void we reach,

Hearts yearning for a new dawn,

Planet B awaits.

Wednesday 02 July 2014 - Day 03 - Huaraz (3,052m)

Acclimatisation day 1..... but first the a long awaited return to the Hotel Colomba's breakfast room... YUM.

Minibus via Melky's to collect a guide for Jono and Clare, over the Río Santa and then up, up, up into the foothills of the Cordillera Negra, passing the municipal rubbish dump at the aptly named Pongo Alto en route.

From our starting point near Shecta we had fantastic views over towards the Cordillera Blanca, but the clouds were covering them fast. A lovely walk, downhill all the way, through fields and farmland, until we reached the ever expanding urban sprawl of Huaraz.

Early lunch at the Cafe Andino, then off to shop with Val and Mike for supplies to take to the LED health post in Quishuar. Purchases included a chest of drawers and kitchenware for the volunteer medics' bedroom. Afternoon tea in the gardens of the Colomba, then back out again to purchase school supplies.

Our pre dinner trip briefing took place on the veranda, by which time Christine, the final member of the initial trek team, had arrived. At 6.30pm it was out for dinner at my favourite, El Rinconcito Minero or as I prefer to call it, El Minero Rincón. I don't know why. Between ordering and eating (Chaufa vegetariano again), Val took Mike and me to get money - this year, thankfully, the BCP bank provided 500 soles cash no problem (300/S for tips, 200/S spends; ~GBP110).

Another early night - I was in bed about 9pm for another good night's sleep.

Read more about my Cordillera Blanca trek with Val Pitkethly.

The city was Chambersburg, Pennsylvania — at the time a small town located at an intersection of thriving agriculture, commerce and local-made goods, a junction for travel to the busy cities of the north or south. Or a stop-over point perhaps, on the way westward towards the rugged and ever-expanding “New Frontier” of a new nation.

Originally founded in 1764 as a fort, the town was settled by Colonel Benjamin Chambers just 25 miles north of the line later formally surveyed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon.

Quickly after its founding, the town grew with an influx of German immigrants. They migrated from the Palatinate area of Germany to the Cumberland Valley that so closely resembled their homeland. And their Reformed faith came with them.

Without a church building, they gathered first in the inn of Nicholas Snider located near the town square, and with the help of a Rev. Faber of Hagerstown, MD, formed a congregation in 1778.

Reverend Jeffrey Diller selects a rose for payment of the 2003 annual Church “Rose Rent” assisted by the younger generation of the church. The tradition dates back to 1780 and is among the state’s oldest religious traditions.

To encourage the local settlers, Col. Chambers deeded land for a church and graveyard in 1780, at the intersection of South Main Street and what was then German (now Liberty) Street. The first building was a log schoolhouse. In 1811, the construction of the present structure was begun.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Zion Reformed today continues to serve as a house of praise to God.

In its deed is the stipulation that each June, the congregation pay the annual rent of one rose from the church grounds to a descendent of the Chambers family “in perpetuity.”

Consequently, each year, the congregation of Zion marks its unique Rose Rent Sunday observance.

The windows in Zion’s sanctuary were dedicated in a special ceremony August 23, 1883, as part of a new renovation of the church. It is unknown as to their replacement value today. However, they have been described by some historians as among the finest examples of combination glass, gold-leaf and paint church windows from the 1800s period.

De-Bunking A Bit of Local Folklore about the church's Waterford chandelier :

One bit of local popular folklore has somehow connected Zion’s chandelier to the Civil War invasion of the town on July 30 1864, when Confederate forces would occupy and torch the town.

The popular story is that the chandelier was removed and hidden by members of the congregation to safeguard it from harm prior to Confederate forces entering Chambersburg. Later, the “invaders” burned most structures to the ground after the town leaders refused to pay a ransom of $100,000 in gold or $500,000 in cash. (Both cash and gold were removed days beforehand and sent to nearby Harrisburg for safe-keeping). Zion Church was only a handful of buildings to be spared from the Confederate’s torches.

“Remember Chambersburg!” would later serve as a rallying cry for many of the Union forces as they advanced deeper into the South in the late summer of 1864.

Even though this interesting tale is still passed along through the years, there is no historical fact or church record to support this or any similar version of this event.
