PIC: NATIONAL TRUST/APEX 04/09/2011
Pictured are competitors Rose Darling and Sam Boex from Cornwall.
The ever expanding community of traditional wooden 'prone' surfing enthusiasts descended on the cosy location of Chapel Porth beach in St Agnes, Cornwall to take part in the 9th annual 'World Bellyboard Championships', organised and hosted by the National Trust and sponsored by Skinners Brewery. The event has grown from humble beginnings with just a handful of entrants, into a genuine World Championship competition which has gone truly global in recent years with entrants from Australia, New York, San Francisco and British Virgin Islands
The traditional art of surf riding has deep roots in the British Isles. First produced in Britain in the 1920’s and known as surf riding boards, wooden bellyboards are a direct descendant of the ancient Hawaiian paipo boards. The competition embraces all aspects of prone wooden boards and will showcase the work of an evolving low key industry, which produces wooden surf riding equipment.
English poet John Betjeman regularly used the boards at Polzeath and perfectly summed it up by declaring that ‘I don’t know if there’s anything so exciting as getting a perfect surf, timing ones shoot off from the waves, riding along the waves…’
One thing that makes the World Belly Board Championships stand out from all other surfing competitions is the lack of wet-suits. Belly Boarders are not allowed to wear them in the competition so rather than the sight of monochromed sleek surfers you are greeted with views of traditional bathing costumes from knitted all-in-one bathing outfits and structured bathing costumes giving more than a nod to times long since past.

The EYE Film Institute Netherlands houses a worldwide renowned film collection. Due to the ever expanding collection, EYE is now situated on the north bank of the River IJ, across the water from the Amsterdam Central Station. Architects Delugan-Meissl have designed this remarkable new building, which has opened its doors in the spring of 2012. The new building houses four state-of-the-art auditoriums, making the new EYE a true gateway to the world of the moving image.
In the ever-expanding tapestry of the universe, the recent revelations in quantum mechanics and quantum science have ignited a fervor of imagination and inquiry. As we peer through the veil of reality, a gateway to Proxima Centauri b—a planet that mirrors Earth in so many ways—beckons us to explore its potential. This newfound knowledge has propelled humanity into a realm of possibilities, where the dream of a second home emerges not merely as fantasy but as a plausible future. With Earth facing unprecedented challenges, from climate crises to overpopulation, the concept of 'Planet B' transcends mere escape; it becomes a beacon of hope. As our thoughts race with the implications of life on Proxima, we envision a world where humanity can thrive once more, nurturing the essence of existence in a new celestial cradle.
Poem
In whispers of stars, the secrets unfold,
A dance of the atoms, a tale yet untold,
Through quantum realms where the shadows entwine,
We glimpse at a future where destinies align.
Proxima calls with its enigmatic light,
A sanctuary awaits in the velvet of night.
With dreams woven rich in the fabric of space,
We seek out a home, a new kind of grace.
Haikus
Stars twinkle above,
Proxima's shores beckon us,
Hope's new dawn arises.
Quantum dreams take flight,
Life blooms on a distant world,
A chance to restart.
In the void we reach,
Hearts yearning for a new dawn,
Planet B awaits.

In the ever expanding city of Mumbai the thought of millions using plastic spoons for 5 minutes and trashing it for over 500 years didn’t fit the logic for brother-sister duo, Yash and Sachi Maniar. So, they founded Shunya Alternatives- sustainable options which leave shunya (pronounced shoe-nya), zero or nothing behind. With a long term view to reducing landfills they provide biodegradable tableware including plates, bowls and take-away cartons made from bagasse (a sugarcane by-product) and areca nut leaf and drinking straws made from bamboo. The Do School, Germany is providing mentoring and support to them as social entrepreneurs.
yesterday, Sam and I took a hike through the Montana gold -- the ecstatic aliveness of autumn where aspens turn and skies stay clear blue even as the temperatures drop below 50F and there is new snow on the peaks.
We walked along a meditative runnel through aspen and chokecherry groves, marsh grass and spent wild iris seedheads. The sage pumping out it's heady volatile oils and rabbitbrush brightening the dry grassy hills with pillows of yellow-white backlit seeds.
We found "our" redtail tree -- an ancient aspen tucked into the creek bottom where a pair of hawks raise their brood each spring on an ever-expanding platform of twigs and limbs.
I half expected to find a redtail feather gift, under the abandoned nest. No such luck. But I did have the luck of a whole hour lying on the gold with my companion and best friend: Sam taking in all the sights and smells of grove-wetland-autumn turning. And me, absorbing healing rays of sunlight and marveling at the trembling frame of sky leaves above me.
Inside the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops, once the largest workshop site in the country, and now remodelled and part of the "Australian Technology Park".

"Since its inception, the Park has evolved into one of the nation’s pre-eminent technology and business precincts. From the organizers of the Day 18 rally:
"WE unite together as doctors, nurses, public health workers/researchers and advocates and as harm reductionists to confront the lethal obscenity of Trump’s concentration camps and policies of medical neglect and abuse toward those seeking refuge in our country.
It is imperative for health care providers to take an official and public stand against the inhuman treatment (in some cases, overseen by licensed medical professionals) at these ever-expanding detention facilities, at the conscious policy of neglect that is tantamount to torture and that has resulted in the wholly-avoidable deaths of at least 7 asylum-seeking children in the last few months. This needs to be called out and delegitimized, much as when professional psychiatrists/psychologists enabled and legitimized the brutal torture techniques at Guantanamo and CIA secret rendition-sites and were eventually confronted. That time is now.
PLEASE unite with us, concerned healthcare providers and public health workers from the UCSF, DPH and harm-reduction services communities in witness and opposition."

The ever expanding Market Theater Gum Wall long ago turned the corner and encroached into the theater entryway. Now the DNA samples are multi-layers thick all around the window. No matter, as the note asks patrons to come into the lobby to get their Improve tickets. Quick, what would be your improvisation on the kids song "Icky Sticky Bubble Gum"? :-)

Day 12/365
Today I had the good fortune of being able to leave work early and head out to visit my family. Although they live fairly close, I don't get out to see them as much as I'd like. In the last year my schedule has gotten a bit crazy, between work, photography, and ever-expanding friendships, time is something I never seem to have enough of.
I was reminded today during some down-time, just how fortunate I am in the way of Family. I am blessed to have been loved, wanted, and known by 2 sets of family. As a reunited adoptee, I lived for 22 years with my adoptive parents (My mom died in 2004, but my father and I are closer than ever), and shortly after my adopted mother's death in 2004, I sought out and found my birth mom, her parents, and my half-brother.
And although 6, almost 7 years later we are still learning about each other, still getting to know each other in many ways-- I am truly truly blessed to have them in my life. As I talked with them about this project specifically, I was reminded how amazing our bond is, despite spending 22 years apart. I share so many traits with them, emotional, creative, physical, psychological-- things that other people find incredible but that we accept as simply more proof of a link we've never needed a blood test to finalize. There is no doubt I am my mother's daughter, that I am my grandmother's granddaughter.
I am blessed that not only have they accepted me as I am, loved me for who I am, and given me the roots of my past to ground me... but that they have allowed me to spread my wings and fly my own path as well. And for that, I am extremely grateful.
Wednesday 02 July 2014 - Day 03 - Huaraz (3,052m)
Acclimatisation day 1..... but first the a long awaited return to the Hotel Colomba's breakfast room... YUM.
Minibus via Melky's to collect a guide for Jono and Clare, over the Río Santa and then up, up, up into the foothills of the Cordillera Negra, passing the municipal rubbish dump at the aptly named Pongo Alto en route.
From our starting point near Shecta we had fantastic views over towards the Cordillera Blanca, but the clouds were covering them fast. A lovely walk, downhill all the way, through fields and farmland, until we reached the ever expanding urban sprawl of Huaraz.
Early lunch at the Cafe Andino, then off to shop with Val and Mike for supplies to take to the LED health post in Quishuar. Purchases included a chest of drawers and kitchenware for the volunteer medics' bedroom. Afternoon tea in the gardens of the Colomba, then back out again to purchase school supplies.
Our pre dinner trip briefing took place on the veranda, by which time Christine, the final member of the initial trek team, had arrived. At 6.30pm it was out for dinner at my favourite, El Rinconcito Minero or as I prefer to call it, El Minero Rincón. I don't know why. Between ordering and eating (Chaufa vegetariano again), Val took Mike and me to get money - this year, thankfully, the BCP bank provided 500 soles cash no problem (300/S for tips, 200/S spends; ~GBP110).
Another early night - I was in bed about 9pm for another good night's sleep.
Read more about my Cordillera Blanca trek with Val Pitkethly.

THE THOMAS MERTON AWARD:
This award is given to an individual who has written and published in the period between the General Meetings a work on Merton and his concerns that has brought provocative insight and fresh direction to Merton studies.
Friend, correspondent, co-sympathizer, soul companion, and fellow prophetic witness to peace in an age that attaches little attention to its fostering, the recipient of the publishing award had a valued, nay, enviable connection with the real, in-the-flesh Thomas Merton.
A prolific writer and journalist, he has contributed many articles and books to the ever-expanding Merton Industry, works that have a large readership, wide credibility, and reveal an intellectual and spiritual intimacy with Merton that helped define much of mid-to-late 1960’s Catholic activism.
His much-reprinted pictorial biography of Merton, Living with Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton, and his biography of Merton correspondent Dorothy Day, All is Grace, as well as his current undertaking on the life and work of the Jesuit poet Daniel Berrigan, all bear witness to his unceasing fecundity of mind and spirit.
The book that appeared between the two ITMS meetings and that is the reason for granting him his Louie this year is the engaging and comprehensive The Root of War is Fear: Thomas Merton’s Advice to Peacemakers. A propitious publication in a tremulous time.
Jim Forest is a name to reckon with in the history of peace-making, a spiritual searcher at home in Eastern Orthodoxy, a person who understands and embodies hospitality (a gift he shares with his wife, Nancy) and a living link with the vision and legacy of Thomas Merton.
-- Michael Higgins, president of the International Thomas Merton Society, June 2017

2:40 PM BIG DATA AND CANCER: STANDARDIZATION
Can big data really help us solve the oldest and cruelest riddle in the history of medicine? It’s a question that has tantalized many researchers, both public and private, as they try to glean insights from an ever-expanding and unruly stash of molecular and clinical information. Companies have shown how analyzing their own data streams can help them fix failures in customer service, speed up shipping, and price more dynamically. But biology is far more complex (and far less understood) than business. What will it take to master this new biodigital system? How do we standardize cancer-related data that comes in a Babel of terminology and from disparate platforms. And even if we can, is this the best way forward?
