The Fairmont Empress, formerly and commonly referred to as The Empress, is one of the oldest hotels in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Located on 721 Government Street, it is situated in Downtown Victoria, facing the city's Inner Harbour. The hotel was designed by Francis Rattenbury, and was built by Canadian Pacific Hotels, a division of the Canadian Pacific Railway company. The hotel is presently managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.

Opened on 25 January 1908, the Châteauesque-styled building is considered one of Canada's grand railway hotels. Since its opening, the hotel has undergone two expansions, the first from 1910 to 1912, and a second expansion in 1928. The building was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada on January 1981.

The Empress is the number 3. Creativity. The Empress is life itself. She is fertility, creativity, she is sexual, she is mother. She is growth in all it forms. The nature around her is fertility. Her crown represents the 12 zodiacal signs. It is the card that calls for selflove, urges one to create, to life live to its fullest on all levels.

Asterocampa leilia belongs to the family Nymphalidae and has a wingspan of 38 - 76 mm. It occurs in canyons and dry woodland in Arizona, Texas and Mexico. The species feeds on rotten fruit, dung and sap. Only in very few cases it can be found nectaring on plants.

The Jewel of the Pacific, The Empress is one of Victoria's highlights. Cresting the city's Inner Harbour, this 460-room hotel was built in the Edwardian style and recently restored to its original grandeur, with antique furniture and luxurious décor. Considered to be the most photographed attraction on Vancouver Island, The Empress was originally designed by Francis Rattenbury, and opened in 1908.

In true British tradition, the hotel is famous for its elegant Afternoon Tea - served to over

75, 000 visitors annually!

The hotel has long been accustomed to entertaining Hollywood celebrities; Rita Hayworth, Jack Benny, Pat O'Brien, Shirley Temple, Douglas Fairbanks, Katherine Hepburn, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Tallulah Bankhead, Roger Moore, John Travolta, Barbara Streisland, Harrison Ford and a host of others have passed through its lobby. And throughout its history, The Fairmont Empress has played host to kings, queens, movie stars and many famous people. In 1919, Edward, Prince of Wales, waltzed into the dawn in the Crystal Ballroom - an event considered by Victorians to be of such importance that almost 50 years later, the obituaries of elderly ladies would appear under headlines such as, 'Mrs. Thornley-Hall Dies. Prince of Wales Singled Her Out.'

Something about the way Capture One has processed my iPhone RAW file has given this building a slight CGI appearance. Which is fair enough since it's a little bit of a fake in real life, trying to look like an old warehouse building when in fact it's brand new.

Feels like ages since I took a camera down here but this morning's cloudy sky, and having time to walk, made it happen. Nice getting back in the groove.
