A wave passes in front of the right wing of this Great Shearwater (Puffinus gravis) as it speeds past the Thelma Dale IV at the Wilmington Canyon. Shearwaters can use the wind energy generated by waves and the winds over the water for dynamic soaring, which enables them to range widely over the ocean in pursuit of prey while not having to spend a lot of energy on flying. As a result, they have a distinctive flight style that involves very little wing flapping and a lot of direction changes. Their dynamic soaring also means a windy day is better for finding them than a still one.
