Le Markt désigne la Grand-Place de Bruges. Il s'agit du cœur historique de la ville où depuis le Xe siècle se tiennent régulièrement des marchés.
Cette immense place est entourée par des maisons du XVIIe siècle, sur un côté, et de nombreuses terrasses de cafés, de l'autre côté. De quoi jongler entre visites culturelles et décontractions. La plus ancienne façade de la place reste Huis Buchotte, où Charles II d'Angleterre, alors exilé, résida entre 1656 et 1657.
Le centre de la place laisse par ailleurs voir une massive statue représentant deux guildes (marchands et artisans du XVIIe siècle), à savoir Pieter de Connick et Jan Breidel. Ces deux hommes ont marqué l'histoire de Bruges en se rebellant contre les Français en 1302. Cette rébellion, dite « les matines brugeoises », est d'ailleurs à l'origine d'une révolte générale des Flandres face aux Français.
Du Markt, vous pourrez rejoindre le Beffroi ou encore le Burg, petit espace pavé qui constitue l'ancien centre politique et religieux de Bruges. Vous y trouverez Stadhuis, hôtel de ville datant de 1375, puis une succession de maisons médiévales conduisant à la basilique du Saint Sang.
Et donc, après ces quelques pas autour du Markt, vous pourrez toujours vous attabler à une terrasse de café.

David Neal of Ann Arbor (left) and Michael Boyd of Grayling have spent countless hours on the Rifle River this summer. Neal owns a cabin on the Rifle mainstream in Arenac County and serves on the Rifle River Watershed Restoration Committee. Boyd is serving a volunteer term of service through the Huron Pines AmeriCorps program (www.huronpinesamericorps.org). He’ll have racked up 900 hours of service conducting erosion and invasive species surveys, road/stream crossing inventories and helping with public outreach at numerous events. Thank you to both of them for all their hard work and dedication on the Rifle!

I like how 'Our Dynamic Earth' is set against such a good example of our Earth being dynamic.
I also quite like how the elegance of its form mocks the scattergun architectural hodgepodge of the Scottish Parliament.
