The Carnavale in Venice lasts 11 days; the first Saturday of the Carnavale was a total washout. On the first Sunday (3 Feb 2013) my good friend Vickie and I went into Venice - what a gorgeous day! Weekends tend to be very crowded but it was still fun to get back to Venice - one of my favorite places - I feel so at home there. This set contains people I shot on the first Sunday - mostly around San Marco's Plaza - what a great day - and it got better after that!

The "For Sale" Miniseries

"Dynamic Calm" is the ninth photo in a miniseries that I recently started. Over the next few weeks, I'll be covering all of my photographs available as prints on my website. I'll be uploading one every weekday (except Friday), as usual, but you'll find a lot more information on the photographs themselves - I might sneak in a few tutorials, quick tips, etc. It'll be great for new and old photographers alike - If you have any friends who might be interested, be sure to let them know! I'll be updating everything on my blog as well as my other social networks, so if you would prefer to follow it there, just click on one of the links above. :)

About "Dynamic Calm"

"Dynamic Calm" was taken from the Warners Bay foreshore. Warners Bay is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and is located 15 kilometres from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. It was named after Jonathan Warner, who settled the area. The population of Warners Bay was 7,009 as at the 2006 census, with in excess of 615 businesses operating in the area.

Taking "Dynamic Calm"

Nikon D90 | Sigma 10-20mm

1 min 43 sec | f/13 | ISO100 | 11.5mm

Like Thursday's upload, I took this shot after attempting a sunset at Dudley Beach (unfortunately the location didn't quite work out). I saw that the clouds were starting to turn, so I quickly drove back to the Warners Bay Foreshore. Unfortunately most of the colour in the clouds had dissipated by the time I arrived, but nevertheless I hurriedly set up the tripod and composed this shot. Originally I went for a fairly standard shot (in terms of shutter speed), but I felt the slight ripples in the water were too distracting. So I grabbed the trusty ND filter, popped it on the end of my Sigma 10-20mm lens, and exposed for just over a minute and a half to get this shot.

Processing "Dynamic Calm"

Not much was wrong with this image. The left hand side was a little dark, so I used Adobe Camera Raw's graduated effect filter sideways (horizontally?), to lighten up that portion of the photo. I cooled the image down slightly, but then decided to apply a warming filter in Photoshop (Photoshop's warming filter produces a different effect compared to simply increasing the white balance temperature in Adobe Camera Raw). I had to clone out a few dust bunnies in the corners, and also one stray stick in the foreground which I was finding distracting. What are your thoughts on small cloning fixes like that? Leave a comment! :)

The guts of the remote to a Garmin GPS, which suddenly stopped working. New batteries were of no help, and it didn't seem worth pestering their support department when I have a perfectly good screwdriver.

The button contacts are on the other face. Notable here are the backlight LEDs mounted active face down in holes in the board, the IR transmitter at the left end, and the contacts to the battery compartment visible just to the left of the only chip on the board.

KOCHVILLE TWP. – A crowd of approximately 1000, most of them youth, gathered yesterday for the Diocese of Saginaw’s second Mid-Michigan Youth Faith Exchange (MYE Faith). The all-day youth event included dynamic speakers, breakout discussion sessions, prayer, Mass and a concert featuring JJ Weeks Band.

MYE Faith 2015 also included a spectacular performance by “The Cross and the Light." The audience was wowed by the Broadway quality singers from the Detroit area.

“They told a story in a way that normally you don’t hear in a musical,” said Stewart Zondlak, a senior at Dow High School in Midland and a parishioner at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Midland. “It was really cool how they did it. I liked it a lot.”

The Most Rev. Joseph R. Cistone, Bishop of Saginaw, also took the stage. He captured the attention of attendees through song and his guitar when he performed with members of the praise and worship band, "Jesus and Music" or "JAM."

Toward the end of the day, Bishop Cistone celebrated Mass for those gathered. He spoke about the theme of the day, love, during his homily message. Referencing his coat of arms and his motto, "Father of Mercy and Love," Bishop Cistone told those gathered that just as Jesus perfectly loves the Father, we, too, are called to imitate the Lord's love. He also shared that as we do our best to follow Jesus, sometimes we fail and God's mercy is always available.

Another very moving moment was the Eucharistic procession into the Ryder Center. With lights dimmed, Bishop Cistone processed in slowly as all eyes were on the Lord in the Eucharist, beginning adoration.

“It was very holy and reverent and also it was a great way to end the opening ceremony for us,” said Hannah Loveless, a sophomore at Dow High School in Midland and a parishioner at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Midland. “I thought it was very great to see that up close and personal.”

Light-hearted moments and laughter permeated the day as well. The seminarians of the Diocese of Saginaw energized and entertained the audience by playing “drums” on plastic buckets. Attendees also felt a sense of parish pride and unity throughout the diocese as images of parishes were displayed on large screens and on banners.

JJ Weeks Band closed out the day by having most of the crowd up on their feet, dancing and giving praise to God. Parents, priests, religious sisters and even Bishop Cistone sang and danced in the crowd.

“Our culture has many definitions of love,” said Mark Graveline, coordinator of youth ministry for the Diocese of Saginaw. “Today, we wanted to bring clarity to the question ‘What is love?’ We wanted to show how Jesus Christ and the Good News of the gospel answers this question. The youth experienced Christ’s love through the sacraments, 'The Cross & the Light’s performance, the music, breakout sessions and other aspects of the event. It was a great day.” #myelove
