Duga-3 (NATO reporting name Steel Yard) was a Soviet over-the-horizon radar system. It was developed for the Soviet ABM early-warning network. The system operated from 1976 to 1989. Its distinctive and mysterious shortwave radio signal came to be known in the west as the Russian Woodpecker.

Two stations of Duga-3 were installed: a western system around Chernobyl and an eastern system in Siberia.

The transmitter for the western Duga-3 was located a few kilometers southwest of Chernobyl (south of Minsk, northwest of Kiev). The receiver was located about 50 km northeast of Chernobyl (just west of Chernihiv, south of Gomel).

The Soviets had been working on early warning radar for their anti-ballistic missile systems through the 1960s, but most of these had been line-of-sight systems that were useful for raid analysis and interception only. None of these systems had the capability to provide early warning of a launch, which would give the defenses time to study the attack and plan a response. At the time the Soviet early-warning satellite network was not well developed, and there were questions about their ability to operate in a hostile environment including anti-satellite efforts. An over-the-horizon radar sited in the USSR would not have any of these problems, and work on such a system for this associated role started in the late 1960s. Duga-3 could detect submarines and missile launches in all of Europe and the Eastern coast of United States.

The first experimental system, Duga-1, was built outside Mykolaiv in Ukraine, successfully detecting rocket launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 2,500 kilometers. This was followed by the prototype Duga-2, built on the same site, which was able to track launches from the far east and submarines in the Pacific Ocean as the missiles flew towards Novaya Zemlya. Both of these radar systems were aimed east and were fairly low power, but with the concept proven work began on an operational system. The new Duga-3 systems used a transmitter and receiver separated by about 60 km.

Yesterday afternoon (4 Dec 2013), we had a partial halo around the sun, an undercast over the Southern Presidentials, some haze, and a few crepuscular rays coming through the halo to our south. This 20 image stitch is what that dynamic scene looked like. It is at a slightly lower resolution since the original was taking too long to upload to Flickr.

ESO’s La Silla Observatory is a very dynamic place. Once the night settles, astronomers start buzzing around, as can be seen by the traces of parking lights. The telescopes come to life, scanning the sky in search of their targets, while our Earth continues its journey through space and around the Sun — a movement we can deduce from the star trails visible in the sky. Such trails are obtained by using long exposure times. As the stars seem to move across the sky, they leave behind a trail of light, similarly to how the car lights are captured in this picture.

This is one of the doors to enter Trinity Cathedral in downtown Pittsburgh that I took back in the summer on a photowalk with Brad Truxell. It really stood out, as it was bright red among the dark brown and grey walls.

I know that I went a little over the top with the processing on this one, but I kind of got carried away in Color Effex. I've been trying to keep the processing a bit more natural lately, so I think I was itching to go a bit too far!

Also got my new tattoo yesterday! Should be posting a picture of it in the next few days.

Thanks for stopping by everyone! LIke I said, please bear with me as I will be uploading slightly more often over the next week or so!

I don't mind invitations, but please no big, shiny, flashing, glitter graphics, they will be deleted. Also, please contact me if you would like to use my pictures for any reason, as all rights are reserved. Thanks!

This is a 5 exposure HDR taken at West Baden Springs Hotel in Indiana. I have a ton of photos from this place and have only uploaded a few. I've got over 1,000 photos waiting to be uploaded and about 3,000 waiting to be processed and then maybe uploaded. "Dynamic By Nature" - that is the slogan for the Town of Petawawa, Ontario, Canada - the place I call home. I don't often share "middle of the day" shots where the light is less flattering, but I wanted to share this photo as a tribute to the natural beauty of my community. I had a guest minister and his wife with us this weekend, and this morning I took them around and "showed them the sights". I was reminded how beautiful Petawawa really is, and how privileged I am to live here. I took this shot this morning, and so here is a fresh look at this beautiful Canadian community. The two young ladies on the paddleboards have it right - this is an outdoor playground...dynamic by nature.

Daily Photo - Under the Cherry Blossoms

I spent a while one evening in the older Gion district of Kyoto. Everything was in full bloom and there were all kinds of interesting people and things to see. It was a bit like a perfect little Japanese fairy-land. When the breeze came along, the blossoms would fall loose and flutter down like pink soft snow. I saw this couple sitting on a small stone wall beside a little stream under some cherry trees…

I did my best to blend into the background as I slyly slid inwards with my D3S. This was shot at ISO 3200, and you can see how little noise/grain there is in the exposure.

I heard via email and some tweets that Leo Laporte mentioned that my iPad Wallpapers on his show - that is cool! Thanks Leo! The only problem is that every time he does that, my servers crash for a little bit… We are working on a new server setup solution around here that should be a lot reliable (and help the page load faster!).

A swirling Eastern Pacific Ocean storm system headed for California was spotted by NOAA's GOES-West satellite on February 28. According to the National Weather Service, this storm system has the potential to bring heavy rainfall to the drought-stricken state.

The storm was captured using visible data from NOAA's GOES-West or GOES-15 satellite on Feb. 28 at 1915 UTC/11:15 a.m. PST was made into an image by NASA/NOAA's GOES Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. The storm's center appeared as a tight swirl, with bands of clouds and showers already sweeping over the state extending from northern California to Baja California, Mexico.

At 11:30 a.m. PST on February 28, Bill Patzert, climatologist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. said, "Right now from northern to southern California we are being battered by very heavy rain, strong winds and our coastal communities are being battered by high surf. Through the weekend we are bracing for mud and rock slides in areas that recently burned [from wildfires]. Flooding is looming up and down the state."

The National Weather Service (NWS) serving Los Angeles posted a Flood Watch for the region on Friday, February 28. The Flood Watch notes the "potential for flash flooding and debris flows for some 2013 and 2014 burn areas in Los Angeles County from this morning through Saturday evening (March 1).”

The NWS Flood Watch also noted "a very strong and dynamic storm will bring a significant amount of rain to much of southwestern California through Saturday evening. A flash flood watch has been issued for several recent burn areas in Los Angeles County due to the abundant rainfall expected. Rain rates at times are expected to range from a half inch to one inch per hour which could cause significant mud and debris flows. There will be a chance of thunderstorms with locally higher rainfall rates."

"Californians haven't seen rain and wind this powerful in 3 years," Patzert said. "By early next week, as this system moves east, this powerful system will wreak havoc causing snow and ice storms through the Midwest into the Northeast."

GOES satellites provide the kind of continuous monitoring necessary for intensive data analysis. Geostationary describes an orbit in which a satellite is always in the same position with respect to the rotating Earth. This allows GOES to hover continuously over one position on Earth's surface, appearing stationary. As a result, GOES provide a constant vigil for the atmospheric "triggers" for severe weather conditions such as tornadoes, flash floods, hail storms and hurricanes.

On a positive note, Patzert noted, "This is a nice down payment on drought recovery in the parched Western U.S."
