I just found out my dog died this afternoon.
I got him when I was a sophomore in high school. He was eleven years old. Being a large dog, he had a lot of problems with his hips, and had trouble getting around. But he still had days where he felt good, running around and wagging his tail like he did when he was a puppy.
When we were both younger, sometimes I’d go out and sit in the yard. He would haul his one-hundred-and-twenty-pound body into my lap and we’d sit there and I’d pet him until he found something more interesting to do or I lost feeling in my legs, whichever came first. (Usually it was my poor legs!) Any time I was in the yard, he would stay as close as he could get to me. If I stood still he’d sit next to me and lean on my legs.
Later in life, when he and I both became lazy, he would roll over on his back and I’d use one of my feet to scratch his belly. He’d grunt and groan and his hind leg would twitch and spasm as long as I would scratch.
He would eat anything.
I mean anything.
Of course, there were the typical give-this-to-the-dog leftovers: rib bones and chicken skin and casseroles and beans and all sorts of meaty products, but he didn’t stop there. If it was on a plate, he ate it. Salad, carrots, tomatoes, raw onions--he’d swallow anything…except medicine. ;)
He was a good dog. He was loyal and sweet and funny and a little bit lazy, and above all, he was a good friend.
I’ll miss you, Troy.

Mas conozco a la gente, mas sufro sus miserias, mas me reconozco en sus alegrías y su bondad, ahí es cuando mas te extraño.

In the language of dogs, the yawn are: (1) often used as a calming signal, (2) to deal with frustration and to give himself a mental break, (3) may indicate anticipation or stress, (4) a way of controlling his enthusiasm, or (5) just a yawn...

For the last of the father daughter walks I've enjoyed over the last few days, Amy drove me to the Moray Firth to stroll the shore beneath Fort St George above Ardesier. Guy had driven through the night from Birmingham with their two dogs - Cookie and Malo - arriving in the early hours as we all slept. While he slept late in the log cabin by Brin croft we walked with them as well as our Oscar and mum's Lulu. "We're in the same pack now" I said "once they waited and watched us from the woods, pondering our uses."

One of my pugs puppies decided to lay down in mom & dad's food bowl. It is right in front of the heat vent.
