it seems very likely that St Anthony's Chapel was closely associated with Holyrood Abbey, which stood just a few hundred yards away to the north-west. The two were linked by a well-made stone track (now heavily worn) with prominent kerbstones that can in places still be seen, and about three quarters of the way along this track up to the chapel is the spring and carved stone bowl known as St Anthony's Well.

It's tempting to think of St Anthony's Chapel as an outlying chapel for Holyrood Abbey, perhaps constructed as a means of getting pilgrims out from under the feet of the monks in the abbey. It has also been suggested that the chapel served as a sort of religious beacon, designed to be clearly visible to sea-borne pilgrims coming to Holyrood Abbey as they sailed up the River Forth.

As for dating, there are references to a grant paid for repairs to St Anthony's Chapel by the Pope in 1426, suggesting the building could date back into the 1300s or beyond. Details of its demise are equally unclear, but presumably, like Holyrood Abbey itself, St Anthony's Chapel fell into disuse and disrepair after the Reformation in 1560.

Today, all that remains of the chapel are parts of the north wall plus remnants of another building a little to the south-west, which has sometimes been called a hermitage but was probably just a store room. The remaining chapel wall shows signs of vaulting, and it is thought that when complete the building would have comprised a small three-bay chapel, with a three-storey tower at its west end. This odd shape, almost as tall as it was long, supports the idea that the chapel was designed as much to ensure distant visibility as to accommodate worshippers.

The North West coastline of Norway has some tremendous scenery and it was a fabulous place to sail through as the sun went down on the western horizon.

This was a trip that certainly surpassed my wildest expectations. I am just grateful the weather and conditions proved to be so good throughout the 12 days we were there!

Thank you for all your kind comments and faves.

NO INVITES and GRAPHICS please!!! I appreciate and would really be happy to see your personal comments :) THANK YOU SO MUCH!

the view halfway up is better than the view from the base,

and it steadily becomes finer as the horizon expands.”

The tree at the back is an old friend of mine! Its suffered a major trauma in its life with the top snapping off at some point in the past but has somehow stayed alive. Its full of character and I enjoy photographing it! Its already featured on flickr a few times and im sure it will many times again!

I enjoyed thick mist in Midlothian last weekend and luckily was able to get out for afew hours on Sat and Sunday.

Monochrome image of rugged cliffs on the Pembrokeshire coastline. The active sea nearby contrasts with the calm on the horizon where the hidden sun reflects off the surface to give a pleasing shimmer.

The sun was setting as we headed out of the Fjords towards the Norwegian Sea. The golden light was breaking through the clouds and created a very atmospheric end to the day!

I stand alone in darkness observing beautiful light place far away. The place is separated by spiky bushes, twisted branches and fallen rotten trees. I try to get through, but how far do I get? I'm all teared, beaten and bleeding, yet nowhere closer to the place of peace and beauty. Then I realize, that I'm a tree and the roots are holding me strongly on my place not letting me go. And the fallen rotten trees all around are those who cut their roots and tried to leave. They died. It is a destiny of a tree to stay on one place for all the long life. It would be so wonderful to get free and reach the place of my dream! But the only way how not to be a tree is to cut the roots...

Neues Museum, Berlin

Room 2.12: Below the rays of Aton - The Royal Family in Amarna

"The opening of the Neues Museum marked a key chapter in the history of 19th-century art, museum design, and technology. Designed by Friedrich August Stüler and built from 1843 to 1855, the building suffered severe damage during World War II, after which it was left as an abandoned bombsite. Emergency measures to secure the structure were only taken in the 1980s.

Painstaking restoration work got under way in 2003 and was undertaken by the offices of the British architect David Chipperfield. The building’s façade and interiors were carefully preserved, the scars of the war were not patched over but rather incorporated into the restoration of the landmarked building. What emerged was a restored historical building that is simultaneously a modern museum." www.smb.museum.de

So, I was back, and exploring the beaches around Bamburgh and Seahouses once again. Slightly different conditions and constantly changing weather, we went through heavy fog, stormy clouds, unforgiving sun, and a warm calm evening. A good day with photographs to match.
