Cornell's Birds of the World explains in a discussion of response to predators, "In urgent situations, adults use distraction displays running in a crouched posture away from intruder. While running, adults may also depress their tails to ground, spread their rectrices [tail feathers], or flap their wings to feign injury. Sometimes they pause and lie flat on ground while continuing to flap their wings, or draw their wings in and crouch." While this is a highly cropped photo, I'm sure the nest was nearby and this behavior was directed at us. After a couple displays we moved on.

We didn't stay to see all the vehicles. It was getting much too hot.

The fabulous firework display held at Katharine Lady Berkeley's School, Wotton-under-Edge. I decided to try photographing from Wotton Hill this year, to capture the Jubilee Trees as almost a silhouette.

One observation of old photos from my youth that causes me some deal of consternation is the reminder of fashions that invaded my clothing style.

Shortly after my wife and I were hitched in the early 1970s she made me a boisterous, checkered leisure suit. If you don’t know what a leisure suit is, a quick Google image search will show you some examples. Hopefully, my photo is not included in the examples that are pulled up.

But it could have been worse.

In the early 1800s, men were proudly wearing flamboyant pantaloons in public. Though pantaloons were designed after an Italian comic figure at the time, it was the French who made them popular.

Pantaloons at one time were actually two separate items, one for each leg. The word pantaloons eventually was shortened to pants and as a result today we still refer to a man wearing a pair of pants even though us men normally only wear a single set.

After reading the background of pantaloons I am more at ease about all the photos of me wearing a loud leisure suit.

This red-tailed hawk is showing off a splendid pair of pantaloons as he flew toward the camera.

Must be French.

Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) (Tom)

Brown Acres – Jackson County – Oregon - USA

After spending four hours out and about looking for wildlife, I came home and found 30 Turkeys on my driveway.

“Wild Turkeys are very large, plump birds with long legs, wide, rounded tails, and a small head on a long, slim neck….. Turkeys travel in flocks and search on the ground for nuts, berries, insects, and snails. They use their strong feet to scratch leaf litter out of the way. In early spring, males gather in clearings to perform courtship displays. They puff up their body feathers, flare their tails into a vertical fan, and strut slowly while giving a characteristic gobbling call. At night, turkeys fly up into trees to roost in groups….. Wild Turkeys live in mature forests, particularly nut trees such as oak, hickory, or beech, interspersed with edges and fields. You may also see them along roads and in woodsy backyards. After being hunted out of large parts of their range, turkeys were reintroduced and are numerous once again.”

Stagecoach Fife Scottish 291 (RSC 191Y) with a very unhelpful blind display was presumably working Kirkcaldy town service K7 as opposed to the Leven to Dunfermline 7 as it would have had blinds fitted for the latter. Rafale Solo Display au Airlegend 2021 de Melun Villaroche

Of all the diving ducks on the island the Ring-neck duck is probably the most scarce with only 3 being reported on the whole Avalon, 1 male and 2 females.

On Saturday I was hoping to see the male at Quidi Vidi lake since he had been reported there for a little while now. Only once before have I had the chance to photograph the male so I was excited to see him amongst the divers when I arrived.

I had hoped to come away with the classic field guide shot showing all his beautiful markings. I had grabbed a few keepers and I was just about to clue up my morning when I noticed him coming my way. He obviously wasn’t coming for me but I did notice he was coming for the female that was right next to me. I heard his distinct courting call and then he did his display. Hoping (actually praying) he would do it again I framed him up and let fire. I was very pleased when I looked at the back of my camera.

Before I went to bed last night I put all my Lego Movie Minifigures nice and neat in a display case, and I woke up to find this.

Note that the usual injunctions against approaching nesting birds don't apply in the Galapagos because the birds simply aren't afraid of humans. Only sites that don't harbor sensitive species are open to tourism, and all visitors making landings have to be accompanied by a certified guide. The rule here is that you have to keep at least 2 m from the wildlife -- and that's about how far we were from this pair.
