You're seeing a screenshot of my ancient Acer monitor with a Datacolor Spyder3 display colorimeter draped across the screen. The colorimeter's USB cable goes over the monitor's top, passes through an attached counterweight, and continues to one of my old Mac Mini's USB ports. Datacolor's calibration software displays a seemingly endless series of colored rectangles ,and the colorimeter records the actual color that the screen produced for each one. The software takes note of the differences between each intended color (which is ideal, Platonic and perfect) and the color that the screen actually displays (which is actual, physical and nearly always wrong).
The software then produces a table of differences between the desired and actual colors, and Apple's display control software corrects the display so that the colors I see on my screen are accurate. This table is called a "display profile".
So why should anyone care about this?
1. If you use a perfectly calibrated display, AND
2. If your image editing software knows how to deal with display profiles, AND
3. If I use a perfectly calibrated display, AND
4. If my browser knows how to deal with display profiles, THEN
The image I see in my web browser will look EXACTLY the way yours looked to you when you invested your time and energy creating it.
Otherwise, we really don't know how images that we make are going to look on other people's monitors. We DO know that almost all monitors are inaccurate if they're not calibrated, but we don't know if the image I'm seeing is brighter or darker, cooler or warmer, redder or greener than the one you intended.
Again, why should you care about this?
If you're like most people, after you calibrate your monitor, you'll say, "I can't stand the way my images look since I calibrated this thing. All my old images look too dark (or bright, or red, or green, or cold or warm)".
Well, I hate to be the one to tell you this, but that's how they've looked to the rest of us all these years. :)

The Lensbaby took a walk at a local garden/poultry farm. Three peacocks were trying to outdo each other, shaking their tails and pursuing the peahens... and the occasional chicken or duck.
On Saturday 18th April 2015, National Express West Midlands had one of their new no 50 buses on display at Kings Heath Village Square, near Vicarage Road and the High Street in Kings Heath.
After I took these, I caught another new 50 towards the city centre! They look nice inside, very comfortable (compared to the old Enviro 400's).

A shot of my booth at Christmas Crossroads November 17th and 18th.
I brought in an old dresser and used the drawers to hold extra cards. On top, I spelled out B-E-L-L-I-S with giant 12" letterpress wood blocks.
When I went for a stroll before breakfast, I encountered this Pied Crow (Corvus albus) in the midst of a raucous early morning display. For his stage, he selected the top of our hotel's neon sign.
I'm a huge fan of crows and ravens here on the west coast of North America, so I was delighted to see and observe their African cousins. The Pied Crow looks so elegant in his tux!
